You can also request an assessment for social care support. Hearing Impairment Services A hearing impairment assessment can be carried out to identify what equipment or support you might need. This may include doorbells, alarm clocks and equipment for the television and telephone. Adult Social Care keep a register of people who are deaf and hearing impaired and can provide advice on how you can become registered. Registration enables you to receive discounts for certain leisure and travel activities. 1

We can also arrange for an interpreter if you require one. 4 Lip Reading Class Contact: Adult Social Care (address as on page 2) Tel: Fax: A qualified teacher runs a class for hearing impaired people on how to develop lip reading skills. The classes are held at the Evolution Buildings, Church Row, Darlington every Wednesday from 10:30am 12pm. You don t need to book, just turn up. Social Groups Darlington Deaf Centre Tel: Fax: A social centre for deaf people who are sign language users and hearing people who have an interest in deaf issues. Activities include raffles and bingo. New members are always welcome. 3

Activities include raffles, bingo and outdoor events. The group meets at the Evolution Buildings, Church Row Darlington. New members are always welcome. Dual Sensory Loss Group Contact: Adult Social Care (address as on page 2) Tel: Fax: A place for people who have both a visual and hearing impairment to meet. Activities include day trips and bingo. The group meets at Rosemary Court, off Fenby Avenue, Darlington. New members are always welcome. 4

They support disabled people and carers through the provision of services, support and information. 5

9 North Regional Association for Sensory Support Contact NRASS Pinetree Centre Durham Road Birtley DH3 2TD Tel: Provides an independent advocacy service free of charge to anyone who is Deaf, deafened or DeafBlind. They support people with issues to do with health, housing, work, education, Social Care, benefit claims and discrimination. The Pensions Service Website: The Pension Service helps with State Pension eligibility, claims and payments. 8

Health Audiology Department Contact: Memorial Hospital Hollyhurst Road Darlington DL3 6HX Tel: Fax: The dedicated, skilled and experienced audiologists provide a comprehensive Audiology and Hearing Aid Service across County Durham and Darlington. They offer both adult and paediatric services covering hearing testing, hearing aids, hearing therapy, tinnitus, balance and dizziness, and bone anchored hearing aids. They are open from Monday to Saturday, with appointments from 8.00am pm, and aim to offer as much flexibility as possible. 9

No appointment is necessary. Travel Concessionary Travel Tel: customerservices@darlington.gov.uk If you have reached pension age or are eligible disabled you can travel free of charge anywhere in England between 9:30am and 11pm on weekdays and at any time on weekends and bank holidays, using a concessionary bus pass. 10

If another adult travels with you, they also receive the same discount. Leisure Healthy Darlington Everyone Card Contact: Dolphin Centre, Darlington, DL1 5RP Tel: HealthyDarlington@darlington.gov.uk The Healthy Darlington Everyone Card offers up to 25% off core activities at The Dolphin Centre and Eastbourne Sports Complex. If you are aged over 60 or registered hearing impaired, you can apply for the card. 11

Signed, captioned and subtitled performances are available. If you are attending a signed performance, please inform staff when booking so you can get seats in the best place. Subtitled Cinemas Website: Most cinemas now provide films with subtitles for deaf or hearing impaired people. Visit the website to see which films are subtitled and when and where they are being screened. 12

14 Education and Employment Access to Work Tel: Textphone: An Access to Work grant can pay for practical support if you have a disability, health or mental health condition to help you start working, stay in work or move into selfemployment or start a business. 13
