1 SCCL Chapter Officer Leadership Training Objectives Day One: Being a Chapter FFA Officer General Session - Introduction to the Conference - 45 min 1. Explain the conference theme. 2. Meet at least three other conference participants and the state officers. 3. Share personal goals and expectations for the conference with other conference participants. 4. Explain the relationship between the level of personal involvement and the benefit realized from the conference. Small Group Session - Vision and Expectations 60 min 1. Explain how the state-wide vision can benefit chapters. 2. Outline the three leadership challenges faced in forming a common vision: a. Being a role model b. Inspiring others to share and participate in the vision c. Challenging the status quo 3. Establish a plan of how to execute the state-wide vision at the local level. Team Debrief - Purpose, Expectations and Growth - 60 min 1. Summarize advisor s insight on accomplishing the state-wide vision at the local level. 2. Establish and discuss chapter-level expectations for officers in fulfilling the state-wide vision. 3. Identify personal and group expectations for individual growth throughout the year. Small Group Session - Being a Role Model - 45 min 1. Define what it means to be an effective role model. 2. Explain the four components of personal character and how they play into being an effective role model within the chapter: a. What you say b. What you do c. Who you are d. How you treat others 3. Create a plan of action for living by an established set of personal principles.
2 Day Two Creating a Shared Vision Small Group Session Challenging the Status Quo 45 min 1. Define status quo for your chapter 2. Identify personal examples of status quo influences Select-A-Sessions Challenging the Status Quo 60 min 1. Recognize misperceptions about being an officer 2. Employ best practices of leading a chapter toward a vision 3. Journal personal resolutions to challenge the status quo 4. Practice teaching content to fellow officer teams using the identified method Leadership is a Position: I am an officer That Must Make Me a Leader! 1. Examine the characteristics of John C. Maxwell s 5 Levels of Leadership 2. Identify actions to take that will move them toward Level 5 Leadership We Learn to Lead at Conferences: I went to SCCL, I m a Leader 1. Explain that leaders develop over time not in one day 2. Identify areas of growth in their teams and chapters Leading Means that as Officers We Do Everything 1. List the advantages and disadvantages of the officer team doing everything within the chapter 2. Distinguish between what officers must do and what members can help complete Our Advisor will do what I Won t/can t 1. Analyze their advisor s current role. 2. Define the role of a chapter advisor. 3. Determine where changes can be made so that officers and members assume the responsibility of the chapter. This is My Year: It s All About Me 1. Demonstrate the consequences of an All about me officer 2. Compare and contrast the success of chapters and chapter officer teams based on chapter officer actions and attitudes I m not the President, so My Office doesn t Count 1. Compare and contrast the strengths each team member brings to the table. 2. Practice assigning roles and delegating using a strengths-based approach. 3. Exemplify taking ownership for your role. Teams: Any Group of Two or More People 1. Identify characteristics of teams and workgroups.
3 The Vision is Owned by the Chapter Officers 1. Demonstrate consequences of chapter officers owning vision. Team Debrief Shifting Our Perspective 60 min 1. Share brief overview and insights gained from Select-A-Session with team members 2. Identify misperceptions that apply to the specified topic areas in regards to their chapter Small Group Session Creating a Shared Vision 75 min 1. Identify pieces of shared vision 2. Identify methods for engaging all members Team Debrief Generating Ideas for a Shared Vision 75 min 1. Diagram picture perfect chapter 2. Consider the pit falls that may prevent becoming a picture perfect chapter 3. Write an initial vision Select-A-Session Steps to Inspire a Shared Vision 45 min 1. Identify the necessary points to be communicated by the vision 2. Identify the necessary people to communicate the vision to 3. Identify strategies for creating buy in about the vision 4. Practice teaching content to fellow officer teams using the identified method Strategies for Engaging Chapter Members in Shaping the Vision 1. Identify a template for the finished vision statement. 2. Provide key phrases to use when explaining the purpose of the vision and gaining member engagement. Bringing the Vision Together Making a Final Product 1. Identify strategies for bringing the pieces from vision planning together to write the vision statement. 2. Compare and contrast strategies for writing a vision statement. Sharing the Vision Beyond the Membership (Speaking with/ Engaging Key Stakeholders) 1. Create a list of stakeholders with which to share the vision 2. Determine locations and/or events at which to share the vision 3. Identify roles of specific stakeholders for achieving the vision Choosing Activities that Move us Toward to Our Vision 1. Identify a tool for evaluating and choosing activities that move us toward our vision. Encouraging Member Behavior that Supports our Vision 1. Identify behaviors that support vision. 2. Determine actions which will support and model behaviors.
4 Our Vision in a Changing Chapter (How to pass it on while it gets improved too) 1. Share current chapter situations in regard to change. 2. Demonstrate how a vision might be adapted and improved to fit a chapter s situation. Evaluating Activities 1. Identify tips and tools for conducting effective evaluation. 2. Practice using tools for conducting effective evaluation. Team Debrief Select-A-Session Sharing 60 min 1. Share brief overview and insights gained from Select-A-Session with team members 2. Create plan to engage all members in vision
5 Day Three Getting the Real Work Done Small Group Session Building Toward a Vision 45 min 1. Review how where we ve been the past two days contributes to a chapter s shared vision. 2. Explain the concept of Big Rocks as they pertain to growing a progressive FFA chapter. 3. Identify the Big Rocks of an FFA chapter. Select-A-Session Building The System to Support a Vision 60 min 1. Explain 6 to 7 systems that are important for implementing a chapter vision. 2. Practice teaching content to fellow officer teams using the identified method. Committees that Work! 1. Determine the important components/qualities of effective chapter committees. Accountability for Everyone! 1. Outline a basic method of accountability to ensure that every member is fostering a positive image every day. Chapters that Communicate! 1. Brainstorm and present methods for promoting effective communication in the chapter. Meetings that Matter! 1. Outline the essential components of every chapter meeting. In With the New! 1. Identify potential recruitment target audiences. 2. List statistics to use in painting a true picture of Agricultural Education and FFA to potential members. Keeping the Old! 1. Outline strategies for adding value to existing members FFA experience. Welcome to the Matrix: A Working POA! 1. Define the basics of an effective POA. 2. Explain different approaches to developing a POA.
6 Engaging all Members as Chapter Leaders 1. Generate ideas for empowering all members to be leaders during chapter activities. Team Debrief Select-a-Sessions Sharing 90 min 1. Share what was learned in Select-A-Sessions. 2. Evaluate the chapter s performance in each of the key areas identified in the Select-A- Sessions. 3. Determine 1-2 areas to focus on and the course of action to direct that focus. Final Team Debrief 60 min 1. Outline the elements of an effective action plan. 2. Develop a day action plan for the chapter. 3. Formulate 1-2 strategies for evaluating progress of the action plan.
