1 ATHLETIC TRAINING Course Outline 1. COURSE TITLE: Athletic Training 2. CBEDS TITLE: Other Health Career Course 3. CBEDS NUMBER: JOB TITLES/O*NET CODES: Athletic Trainer EMT/Paramedic Exercise Physiologist Occupational Therapist Aide Occupational Therapist Physical Therapist Aide Physical Therapist COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course offers instruction and practical application in the skills and techniques necessary for the prevention and care of athletic injuries. Topics covered will include: CPR/First Aid Certification Human Anatomy and Physiology Terminology Evaluation, Treatment, and Rehabilitation of Athletic Injuries The optional internship that can accompany the classroom instruction will allow students the opportunity to increase their practical skills to the point of being competent to work with specific sports teams. They will also be working toward 5 credits per semester of internship. 6. HOURS: 180 hour of instruction, practice, and up to 180 hours of Community Classroom. 7. PREREQUISITES: Junior or Senior standing or prior instructor approval. 8. DATE: September

2 9. COURSE OUTLINE: A. CAREER PREPARATION STANDARDS: 1. Students will understand how personal skill development affects their employability. a. Students will demonstrate appropriate attitude and behavior related to patient care. Honesty, responsibility, confidentiality, and initiative are desired traits to be encouraged and refined. 2. Students will understand key concepts in group dynamics, conflict resolution, and negotiation. a. Working in an Athletic Training program will require students to: 1)work cooperatively and understand the roles of leadership and supervision, 2)show respect and understanding of all individuals seeking treatment, and 3)understand the cultural diversity of athletics and understand sexual harassment laws. 3. Students will exhibit critical thinking skills, logical reasoning, and problem solving. a. Students will use techniques and information learned in the classroom to critically and logically evaluate injuries. They will also maintain logs and paperwork to track, organize, and interpret injury trends. 4. Students will understand principles of effective communication. a. Appropriate anatomical and medical terminology will be introduced and encouraged in all aspects of the class and internship. Students will develop the ability to communicate with other medical professionals in all communication types including oral communication, written communication, giving and following directions. 5. Students will understand occupational safety issues including the avoidance of physical hazards in the work environment. a. Important safety lessons will directly identify which skills will be worked on and reinforced in the internship. The lessons will include: appropriate attire personal safety equipment use following established safety protocols how to avoid personal injury in the workplace. 6. Students will understand career paths and strategies for obtaining employment within their chosen fields. a. Guest speakers from a variety of related fields will give students information about possible career paths. b. Students will investigate and obtain information from various colleges/trade schools related to programs, entrance requirements, and cost. 7. Students will understand and adapt to changing technology by identifying, learning, and applying new skills to improve job performance. a. Current technology trends will be identified and students will keep abreast of those trends. Current research and studies will be used to maintain students awareness of current trends relating to injury 2
