1 Palm Springs Unified School District Palm Springs, California PRIMARY FUNCTION: SPORTS MEDICINE TEACHER The position of Sports Medicine Teacher, under the supervision of the Principal and/or Assistant/Vice Principal, will plan, develop, organize and implement a comprehensive Sports Medicine program; instruct students regarding medical techniques in the prevention and treatment of athletic injuries; train and prepare students in the phases of health care for athletes including injury prevention, nutrition, physical fitness, injury evaluation, immediate first aid and rehabilitation; assist students in making career and vocational choices; perform other related functions as required. DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE TO: Principal and/or Assistant/Vice Principal ASSIGNED RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Teach and instruct subject areas commonly found in a comprehensive Sports Medicine program such as (but not limited to) health risks in sports, injury prevention, care of injuries, injury rehabilitation, response to emergency situations, nutrition, physical fitness/endurance/strengthening practices, etc. 2. Utilize a District approved course of study that follows state approved Career Technical Education (CTE) standards, instructional program guidelines, and other materials in planning and developing lesson plans and teaching outlines; conduct teaching and instructional activities, using educational equipment, materials, books, and other learning aids. 3. Emphasizes hands-on instruction and pursues a variety of methodologies in teaching and instructing students, including (but not limited to) lectures, demonstrations, discussions, and laboratory experiences. 4. Plan, develop, organize and implement a variety of individual and group engagement activities to motivate students and effectively utilize the time available for instructional activities. 5. Establish and maintain relationships with local employers to develop training and/or employment opportunities for students; set up community classroom internships with local employers; place students at worksites, monitor and document their progress; maintain required documents and records. Collaborates, develops and maintains positive relationships with school site athletic coaches to provide intern and field-work opportunities for students; monitors and supervises student intern and field-work placements; files, maintains and updates appropriate documentation on student intern and field-work placements. 7. Assist, counsel, and guide students in making Sports Medicine career choices; instruct students on job seeking and job retention skills. 8. Plan, develop, and utilize a variety of instructional materials and aids appropriate to the intellectual and instructional level of students from varied socio-economic and cultural backgrounds, and who possess a range of mental and emotional maturity. 9. Maintain appropriate standards of student behavior, using behavioral management strategies and techniques, including positive reinforcement and behavior shaping procedures. 10. Prepare, administer, score, record, and report the results of District and/or School approved assessments; counsel, confer, and regularly communicate with students, parents, site administration, and District personnel regarding student progress. 11. Cooperatively pursue alternative solutions to ameliorate student learning problems, and to enhance expanded academic, social, and emotional growth opportunities. 12. Recommend, select, order and prepare purchase requisitions for appropriate Sports Medicine supplies, materials, books, equipment, and learning aids. 13. Stores, inventories, maintains and recommends for repair all Sports Medicine equipment; ensures storage of all equipment and materials in clean, safe and orderly manner. 14. Attends and participates in faculty and District meetings; participates in professional development activities, workshops, committee meetings and seminars as required. 15. Maintains, updates, organizes, files, prepares and communicates accurate records and files relevant to the Sports Medicine program. 16. Plan, create, distribute and market information relevant to the program offerings, projects and activities to recruit students, increase enrollment and promote community awareness of the Sports Medicine program. 17. Update, maintain and implement current and new trends, skills and professional practices relevant to Sports Medicine instruction. 18. Perform a variety of non-instructional duties, including curriculum and instructional development activities, student supervision, and consultation activities. Page 2 of 6

3 19. Perform other related duties as assigned. ESSENTIAL JOB REQUIREMENTS - QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of: a. Principles, theories, practices, methods and techniques used in curriculum development, lesson planning and classroom instruction of secondary level students. b. Curriculum expectations and requirements for Sports Medicine. c. Principles, theories, practices, methods and techniques to create a classroom environment that promotes positive secondary student conduct and motivation for secondary student learning. d. Anatomy, evaluation and rehabilitative processes for athletic injuries, sports psychology, physical fitness techniques, nutrition, patient care skills, and medical terminology. e. Applicable sections of the State Education Code, District Policies and other applicable laws relevant to student instruction. f. Current trends and research concerning the growth and development of secondary students. g. Current trends and research related to the practices, training and employment in the field of Sports Medicine. h. Knowledge of ligament and muscle testing Ability to: a. Adapt plans and instructional delivery to meet the differentiated needs of students. b. Ability to evaluate injuries, provide preventative care through taping, bracing, massaging, and use of various modalities c. Ability to determine when additional medical services are warranted d. Work independently with little direction. e. Create an instructional program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth. f. Meet schedules and timelines. Page 3 of 6

4 g. Monitor students in athletic fields, gymnasiums, laboratory settings, classrooms, on school grounds and off-campus for school related activities. h. Maintain professional and positive relationships with students, parents, colleagues and administration. i. Work in a diverse socio-economic and multicultural community. j. Operate a computer and job related equipment. k. Read, interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. l. Maintain current knowledge of applicable curriculum and school instruction related regulations. m. Establish and maintain a variety of accurate record keeping and filing systems. n. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. o. Maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance. Incorporated within one or more of the previously mentioned performance responsibilities, which are essential functions of this job description, are the following essential physical, mental and environmental requirements (reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job functions): Physical: a. Ability to push, pull, and transport instructional and/or presentation materials. b. Ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand a normal conversation. c. Ability to understand speech at normal levels. d. Ability to bend, twist, stoop, kneel and reach. e. Work in loud and noisy settings. f. Ability to lift up to twenty-five (25) lbs. regularly; fifty (50) lbs. occasionally. g. Ability to drive a personal vehicle to conduct business. h. Significant fine motor and finger dexterity. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor s Degree or higher Minimum of three (3) years of experience in the field of Sports Medicine within the last five (5) years. CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENT Possess or ability to obtain a valid California teaching credential authorizing Sports Medicine instruction. Page 5 of 6

OVERTIME STATUS: Eligible BARGAINING UNIT STATUS: Palm Springs Teachers Association TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and work year governed by the Collective Bargaining Agreement with the Palm Springs Teachers Association. EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement with the Palm Springs Teachers Association and the Palm Springs Unified School District and the Board Policy on Evaluation of Certificated Personnel.
