1 2014 Republic of Ireland Fundraising Salary Survey in partnership with

2 Introduction This survey was created by Charity Careers Ireland in partnership with Fundraising Ireland, Business to Arts and The Wheel and aims to capture important information on the salary, conditions and background of professional fundraisers in Ireland. As such, it will be an extremely useful resource for not-for-profits in Ireland in assisting them to recruit and retain fundraising staff. The survey was undertaken by 162 professional fundraisers working in the Republic of Ireland during October The results have been compiled by Charity Careers Ireland and are free to share.

3 Question 1 - What type of organisation do you work for? The largest group of responses were from fundraisers working for health organisations (48 respondents or 29.6% of the total), followed by Overseas Aid and Development (14.2%). Question 2 Which of the following levels best describes your role? Two-thirds of respondents (66.7%) were at manager-level or higher.

4 Question 3 Which of the following levels best describes your role? Corporate Fundraising (14.2%) is the most common fundraising specialism amongst the respondents. Legacy Fundraising (2.6%) is the least common specialism. Around one in seven fundraisers in the Republic of Ireland are general fundraisers. Question 4 What gender are you? Two-thirds of fundraisers in the Republic of Ireland (67.3%) are female.

5 Gender of Fundraising Managers Gender of Heads of Fundraising/Fundraising Directors Irish fundraising s gender imbalance increases at Manager-level with the female/male ratio increasing further (to 71%). The balance is restored at Director level with slightly more men than women becoming Directors of Fundraising, but no more so than Ireland s population gender ratio.

6 Question 5 What age are you? The majority (57.3%) of fundraisers in the Republic are under the age of 40. Question 6 What is your employment status? One in nine (11.1%) of fundraisers work on a contractual or temporary basis.

7 Question 7 How long have you been in your current role? More than half (53.1%) of fundraisers have been in their current post for less than 2 years. Question 8 How long do you think you ll be in your current role? One-third (33.3%) of fundraisers in the Republic of Ireland expect to move job in the next year.

8 Question 9 What did you do before you became a fundraiser? Marketing (19.8%), Events Management (15.4%), Sales (12.3%) and Administration (9.9%) are the most common backgrounds for fundraisers in the Republic of Ireland.

9 Question 10 Do you have a degree? More than three-quarters of fundraisers (76.4%) have a degree. Question 11 Do you have a fundraising qualification? Fewer than one in five fundraisers in the Republic of Ireland have a vocational qualification in fundraising. Question 12 Has you organisation given you appropriate training? Over a third (36%) of fundraisers in the Republic of Ireland believe they have not received appropriate training for their role.

10 Question 13 What kind of organisation do you work for? Around one-third (32%) of fundraisers in the Republic of Ireland work for local or regional charities. Question 14 Is your organisation signed up to the Guiding Principles for Fundraising? One in ten fundraisers are not aware if their organisation has signed up to the Guiding Principles.

11 Question 15 Are you a member of Fundraising Ireland? The majority of fundraisers who responded (59.3%) are members of their professional organisation. Question 16 Are you paid a bonus (e.g. a commission) on your fundraising performance? Almost one in ten (9.3%) of fundraisers are financially incentivised. Question 17 Does your organisation contribute to a pension scheme on your behalf? Slightly more fundraisers receive a pension than don t.

12 Question 18 Do you work more than your contracted hours? 98% of fundraisers work more than their contracted hours 57% do so regularly. Question 19 How did you find out about your current role? Almost half of the fundraisers (45.7%) were recruited through an informal process (word of mouth, personal contact or social media).

14 Variance in salary levels for Heads of/directors of Fundraising 25,000-30, % 30,000-35, % 35,000-40, % 40,000 45, % 45,000 50, % 50,000 55, % 55,000 60, % 60,000 65, % 65,000 70, % 70,000 75, % 80,000 90, % 90, , % 100,000 plus 2 4% While the average salary for this group of senior fundraisers was just over 60,000, more than half of the respondents (51%) earned more than this amount. This is due to some significantly lower salaries reducing the average figure. A more typical salary at this level would be around 67,000.
