NEEA Emerging Technology Report Q Emerging Technology Metrics ILC Phase Scanning & Concept Identification Concept Opportunity Assessment In-Process (Market & Product Assessment Strategy Testing and Finalization) Market Deployment Cycle 5 Goal 1400 () th Plan 20 Year Potential year savings move into Market Deployment in cycle 5 Actuals = Technical potential maximum possible savings over 20 years = Average Megawatt ILC = Initiative Lifecycle Emerging Technology Project List Advanced HVAC Solution and Roof Top Units (RTU) Dynamic Glass Extended Products for Motor Driven Systems We are scanning for efficient alternatives to existing roof top units. Past research has explored evaporative cooling and advanced controls. Currently we are testing a systems approach separating ventilation control from building heating and cooling. The approach includes an efficient Heat Recovery Ventilation (HRV) system for Dedicated Outside Air and a hydronic or variable refrigerant flow (VRF) for building heating and cooling. Dynamic glass is glazing that adapts to changing natural light to lower glare and solar gain. Most are also double pane providing high insulation benefits. Integrated motor systems with optimized performance to a system curve. Includes motor, controller, and fan / pump / compressor combinations. Commercial John Jennings / Charlie Stephens Our field research of a very high efficiency dedicated outdoor air systems (DOAS) using an efficient heat recover ventilation (HRV) system from Ventacity Systems is in high gear. As of the end of our second quarter, we have six (6) firm projects and four (4) more sites in the pipeline. We expect to have installations complete on all ten (10) sites by November so we can get a full set of performance data over the winter and enough field monitoring data to draw some conclusions by this time next year. Commercial Rob Curry Seattle IDL is conducting a one year evaluation study of a 90,000 SF six story UNICO office building in Seattle with electrochromic primary window replacement manufactured by VIEW. The study will run through Industrial Technical potential study indicates large ~150 of potential for Hydraulic Institute s efficiency rating for pump systems between horsepower. NEEA is in the process of hiring SBW for the development of Provisional measures for under 25hp and a protocol for over 25hp. This project is being co-funded by BPA.
Pump Operator Certification Municipal water supply leak detection and correction Combo Hot Water & Space Heating Ductless Heat Pump (DHP) Includes Carbon Dioxide (CO2) heat pumps Clothes Washers Advanced Water Heater systems Certification for pump operators who demonstrate mastery of efficiency. Studies of water supply indicate significant losses of water from leaks in the supply system. Losses range from 15-70%. These pre-meter losses affect operating costs. Best practices for leak detection and correction techniques are available, but it is not clear if these practices would help our region. Leverage inverter-driven heat pump technology for space conditioning and domestic hot water. Field data revealed washers test procedure does not adequately estimate the remaining moisture (and consequently drying energy needed). We can improve the test procedure and pursue greater savings. Water heaters that don t fit the integral product covered by the federal standard. Includes split systems. Industrial 20 Hydraulic Institute (HI) and Pump Systems Matter (PSM) have issued three contracts to have both the Pump System Assessment Professional (PSAP) certification and a Pumping Systems Management certification. Job task analysis 100% complete, Certification Committee and Education committee s bylaws drafted and approved and most positions have been filled with industry specialist and or subject matter experts. Targeting release of certification by mid Once the certification is complete, NEEA will consider evaluating the energy savings potential of a certified specialist. Industrial Mark Rehley N/A 20 Report is pending release and will be available in early Q3. Dave Kresta / Charlie Stephens Christopher Dymond Dave Kresta/ Supporting BPA/ Washington State University (WSU) fieldtesting of Sanden combo systems (expected commercialization in late 2016). Early results were provided to Sanden who has updated their system to better address freeze protection in situations where power is lost. Sanden has received UL certification and expects to release their product for scaled commercialization in late add to Dryers Initiative 36 We are developing a scope of work for additional testing that will quantify impact and help establish the benefit of pairing an Energy Star Washer with an Energy Star Dryer. Cycle Supporting BPA/ Washington State University (WSU) lab and field-testing of advanced refrigerant split system products. No new data in Q2, 2016.
Window Attachments Next Generation/UHD TVs Connected Thermostats Blinds and permanently installed high performance storm windows 4K Ultra High Definition (UHD) TVs with various forms of High Dynamic Range (HDR), wide color gamut, smart features are quickly gaining consumer market share. The current DOE test method contains gaps and loop holes and do not adequately test the next generation technologies. Several new display technologies unique from LED back lit LCD are emerging. thermostats that control various heating and cooling equipment, utilize weather and occupancy data to better manage the systems, and engage homeowner to more closely manage energy use and comfort. Rob Curry Q4, NEEA Staff are developing the concept for a market transformation program to cooperatively develop test methods and ratings that the Attachment Energy Rating Council can manage and complete by June Proposing work with PNNL to list, track, and prioritize all relevant attachment products. Nick Leritz (in RPP) 57 We have hired Ecos Research for a project to coordinate the development of a video clip that addresses the full range of new Ultra-High Definition TV features and provides a method of measuring real energy consumption. The test clip should be completed by Q4, We are also coordinating domestically and with Europeans on testing and test clip development. EPA recently released new certification testing guidelines for TVs with screen luminance features that may skew energy consumption test results. DOE also release an RFI regarding the same screen luminance features with the intent of guiding future test method procedures. Dave Kresta 226 We hired EQL Energy to analyze the availability and savings potential of connected thermostats for control of Ductless Heat Pumps in zonal and forced air furnace homes. They found a few commercial products with very limited adoption. They estimate savings potential of 226 for connected thermostats in our region. Ductless Heat Pump Product Innovations and Channel Developments Quick connect ductless heat pumps are common in other parts of the world. They enable end users or contractors to install a DHP without having a refrigerant license. Exploration of new market channels direct to General Contractors and Electricians. We are considering a follow-up study to test a connected thermostat that has the capability to control a Ductless Heat Pump and forced air furnace to maximize efficiency and comfort. The study will likely start in Q Initial findings from our first study of quick connect ductless heat pumps indicate there are three potential products out of the ten reviewed. None of the products are high efficiency, but three of the products allow for DIY (do it yourself) installation without voiding the warranty. We have contracted with Clearesult for next phase to try two units from the top two products to evaluate assembly and performance of quick connect technologies. Each unit will be installed and checked for refrigerant leak tightness over a period of time. If this test looks promising NEEA will conduct reliability testing at Cascade Environmental labs for refrigerant sealing (Shake, rattle and
Pivot Commissioning Pumping energy is used to compensate for poorly maintained pivot systems. We are exploring ways for growers to monitor pivot performance to achieve maximum efficiency of current equipment Technical potential maximum possible savings over 20 years roll). NEEA will be testing current practice solutions at the same time. Results of short pilot by end of 2016 Agricultural TBD 10 The Project is still on hold pending the release of the BPA Market Characteristic Study and the updated Scientific Irrigation Scheduling (SIS) analysis. Continued regular communications and support with BPA on their efforts for both the Market Characterization and SIS savings studies. Still on hold as of end of Q MS Market Share Emerging Technology Strategic Activities Strategies Description Sector Product Next Milestone Notes Automated Measurement and Verification (M&V) (Used to be Low Cost Whole Building Energy Metering); also incorporates industrial, commercial and residential energy management information systems (EMIS) Exploring how low cost sensors and / or improved analytics can be used to reduce the cost of measurement and verification of savings All Nick Leritz John Jennings Completion of three year study of Bullitt foundation building s use of an advanced energy management system The energy efficiency power purchase agreement between Seattle City Lighting and the Bullitt building in Seattle reached its first year milestone. EnergyRM s DeltaMeter demonstrated promising performance against an independent model and actual energy use. An explanation of the project can be found here. Home Energy Preliminary Score First Cost Barrier Removal Options Generate home energy performance ratings for all existing homes based on publically available data. Higher incremental first cost is a problem for most energy efficiency technologies. This is especially true before the new technology reaches scaled production. We are investigating innovative ways to reduce or eliminate the barrier associated with the first cost. and Commercial Christopher Dymond Dave Kresta Phase 1 Complete Feasibility Study completed in April Looking for utility and energy efficiency organization interested in pilot investigation with local Multiple Listing Service (MLS). Financial preliminary investigation complete Completing an exploratory assessment of on-bill financing options for EE measures. Overview doc for utilities and energy efficiency organizations will be available in Q3.
Unsolicited Proposals Received in the last quarter. Date Title Sector/Description Decision Explanation of Decision Received 4/21/2016 Advanced Reliability Economizer Sequence The Advanced Reliability Economizer Sequence (ARES) is a new technology, applicable to both new construction and retrofits. It more optimally controls outside air, return air, and exhaust air dampers to provide economizer cooling instead of or in conjunction with mechanical cooling. The technology is improved software to provide this function, and requires associated hardware. The associated hardware is usually part of existing building HVAC controls. d in depth discussion with submitter to better understand state of technology and barriers Economizing offers a lot of potential energy savings for the region, but there have been many attempts to solve the technology issues with limited success. We want to fully understand how this new approach fits into what we know from past research. 6/21/2016 Inverter-Driven Packaged Heat Pumps for Multifamily Applications 6/27/2016 Roof Integrated Thermal Exchange System This proposal recommended conducting lab testing and a feasibility study to determine if this technology would benefit from a larger field study. If these steps indicate positive results we would be in a position to recruit a pilot project and collect actual field data of costs, savings, and occupant acceptance. Positive results from this research would lead to savings estimates that could be used by regional utilities for incentive programs, modeling guidelines for SEEM, equest, and EnergyPlus simulations, and marketing material for a regional market transformation effort. This product uses heat absorbed by roof claddings to heat domestic and commercial hot water supplies. The heat collected from the panels is concentrated using a heat pump before storage in a water tank. d for review at July Product Council meeting Doesn t appear to be commercially available. Following to verify and get more information about performance and costs. Technologies / Projects - Moved from Scanning or incorporated into another project Title Description Sector Product Technical Potential Status for Savings Business Information Technology (IT) Equipment, services and tools that may reduce the energy consumption of server closets. Commercial 203 We are exploring new research with BPA, but until we have a firm scope of work we are removing this from our active list.
