Admonishments Important safety admonishments are used throughout this manual to warn of possible hazards to persons or equipment. General Safety Precautions Warning: Wet conditions increase the potential for receiving an electrical shock when installing or using electrically-powered equipment. To prevent electrical shock, never install or use electrical equipment in a wet location or during a lightning storm. Caution: Fiber optic cables may be damaged if bent or curved to a radius that is less than the recommended minimum bend radius. Always observe the recommended bend radius limit when installing fiber optic cables and patch cords. Danger: Exposure to laser radiation can seriously damage the retina of the eye. Do not look into the ends of any optical fiber. Do not assume the laser power is turned-off or that the fiber is disconnected at the other end. Standards Telcordia: This equipment complies with the applicable sections of GR DESCRIPTION The RealFlex 3mm RBRF Drop Cables provide superior performance with a rugged 3mm indoor/outdoor cable jacket that provides users with additional flexibility and maximum durability for FTTP deployments in Multiple Dwelling Units (MDU). 3 The RealFlex RBRF 3mm MDU drop cable has a minimum bend radius of 7.5mm, this is smaller than a traditional fiber. It also provides long-term reliability with improved Insertion loss (IL) performance in MDU environments where 90º bends are prevalent. 3mm RBRF MDU drop cables can safely be pulled through micro ducts and are also designed for easy deployment using standard cabling staples for installation and strain relief. Technicians are able to quickly secure cables to most surfaces and around tight corners without compromising insertion loss (IL) performance. The RealFlex 3mm RBRF rugged high performance indoor/outdoor drop cables can be used to connect FTTP premises equipment and plant cabling systems in most MDU applications. These cables are typically routed from a Fiber Distribution Terminal (FDT indoor or outdoor) or from the OmniReach Terminal Enclosure (OTE) to each individual living unit. These drop cables meet standards set for indoor risers, plenum or indoor/outdoor applications, and they are available in a variety of lengths with high performance SC connectors (APC or UPC) terminated on one or both ends. RealFlex 3mm RBRF drop cables meet the requirements of Telcordia GR-326 and are available in standard lengths of 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, or 300 feet. A typical reel of this cable is shown in Figure 1. All fiber drops are packaged on convenient reels so that field deployment can be quickly and efficiently completed. 4 3 SPECIFICATIONS FOR RESIDENTAL INSTALLATIONS This section outlines general guidelines for the installation of the infrastructure for the residential multi-dwelling unit (MDU) structured cabling applications. The guidelines herein provide a generic cabling system for current RBRF cables and others under development. OmniReach RBRF drop fiber cables should be installed in new structures before the drywall is applied. For this cabling technique, cable can be inserted and pulled through 0.50-inch diameter holes drilled in the studs using a maximum pulling force of 15 pounds. Depending on the insertion loss budgeted per drop, each cable may have a maximum of 24 or degree bends and may be secured with up to 100 staples. See Table 1 for insertion loss (IL). Table 1. OF STAPLES 1310NM 1550NM 1625NM dB 0.17dB 0.25dB dB 0.18dB 0.27dB dB 0.20dB 0.33dB 3.1 Micro Duct Installation Guidelines The OmniReach RBRF drop fiber cable can also be installed by inserting it into 8.5mm/6mm (O.D/I.D) Micro duct. A 300 foot drop cable may be installed in a Micro duct that is a maximum of 270 feet long with a maximum of nine corner bends. To pull the OmniReach RBRF drop cable through the micro duct a maximum of 32 foot/pound (ft./lb.) of force is allowed. A maximum of 11 foot/pound (ft./lb.) of pulling force is allowed when another person is pushing or feeding the drop cable into the micro duct. For instructions on attaching the ADC RBRF drop cable to the pull string refer to instructions included in the Corning TKT-DROP-KIT. The OmniReach RBRF drop cables can be installed at temperatures as low as -40ºC. See Table 2 for insertion loss. Table 2. Determine the cable starting point and end point. Mark studs for drilling and drill 0.5-inch holes at the locations marked. After drilling holes in the studs you can either Page 4

5 string the fiber cable through the holes in the studs or install a Micro duct through the holes and string the fiber cable later. Secure cable with staples as necessary, refer to insertion loss Table 1 for the maximum number of staples allowed and maximum number of 90º bends permitted. Secure cable by stapling as shown in Figure 2 be careful that you do not drive a staple into or through the cable. Figure 2. Stapling Procedure Page 5
