1 UPDATEUPDATEUPDATE Converting the tower chassis to a rack-mount chassis Rail overview Converting your Server to Rack-Mount The rail kit includes the following: Two rail units Five packages of screws (labeled A, B, E, F, and G) Two packages of locknuts (C and D) Two handles Four ears (handle mounting brackets) Make sure that you have all the components before you begin. If any item is damaged or missing, contact Gateway for assistance. Each rail unit consists of three members, the inner member, the intermediate member, and the outer member. The inner member can be released from the rail unit and is attached to the server. The outer member, along with the embedded intermediate member (which cannot be detached from the rail unit), is mounted to the rack. 2 Converting your Server to Rack-Mount To convert the tower case to a rack-mount case: Warning This server may have two power cords. To disconnect internal AC power, you must unplug both power cords. 1 Follow the instructions in Preventing static electricity discharge in your server user guide. Make sure that you turn off the server, then unplug the power cord(s) and all other cables connected to the server. 2 Place the server on its top on a stable, non-skid surface. 3 Remove the four plastic feet from the bottom of the chassis by removing the screws that hold them on. 4 Place the server upright. 5 Remove the top panel by removing the screw (1) on the back that holds the top in position, then lifting the top panel off (2). 6 Place the server on its side again. 2

3 7 Secure the ears to both sides (which were the top and bottom) of the chassis with two screws (F) each. 8 Attach the handles to the ears with two screws (G) each. 3

4 Converting your Server to Rack-Mount 9 Remove the inner members of both rails from the intermediate members. 10 Attach the inner rail members to both sides of the chassis, with the lockin buttons toward the front, with four screws (E) each. 11 Install the rails to the rack cabinet by following the instructions in Mounting your server into a cabinet on page Remove the optical drive and EMI shields and reinstall them horizontally by following the instructions in Removing and Installing an optical drive in your E-9520T Server User Guide. 4

5 Mounting your server into a cabinet Caution Before attaching cabinet accessories, make sure that the server is turned off and all power cords are unplugged. The cabinet mounting hardware included with your server should be used with standard 4-post cabinets that have front and back vertical posts with either square or round holes. If your cabinet is a different type, obtain mounting hardware from the cabinet manufacturer. Caution The cabinet must provide sufficient airflow to the front of the server to maintain correct cooling. 5

6 Converting your Server to Rack-Mount To mount your server in a cabinet: 1 Using the chart above, determine which holes to use to mount your server. Make sure that the rails are level right to left and front to back. 2 Adjust the outer rail member to fit the distance between the front and back posts by moving the rear bracket. 6

7 3 Insert the locknuts (C for square holes and D for round holes) into the back of each rack post through the hole. The locknuts clasp the holes. 4 Attach the outer rail members to the rack by first aligning the holes on the front and rear brackets with the holes on the rack (with the locknuts installed), then securing the rail members with screws (use screw A, two front and two back for each rail member). Warning You must anchor the rack to an unmovable support to prevent it from falling over when the server is mounted on the rack. After completing the rack mount installation, do not push in the safety latch unless you want to remove the server from the rack. The safety latches (lockout buttons) can prevent the server from sliding out of the rack (see Rail overview on page 1). 7

8 Converting your Server to Rack-Mount 5 Push the lockin buttons (1) on both sides of the inner rail members, then slide the inner members (mounted to the server chassis) into the intermediate members (2) (mounted in the rack). (Your server may be different than the server shown in the example.) Warning You must support the server while installing or removing the front screws and while sliding the server on or off the cabinet rails. If the server is not supported, damage to the server or injury may result. 6 Push the server toward the back of the cabinet until the front of the server rails touch the front cabinet posts, then secure with two screws (3) through each server rail. Removing the server from a cabinet Warning Screws are required to support the front of the server. You must support the server while removing the front screws and while sliding the server off the cabinet rails. If the server is not supported, damage to the server or injury may result. To remove the server from a cabinet: 1 Remove the four screws through the handles that hold the server in the cabinet. 2 While supporting the server, slide the server out from the cabinet. 3 Push the lockout buttons on the inner rail members on both sides of the server to release the inner rail members from the intermediate members. 4 Pull the server out until it is free of the rack. 8
