1 Introduction The Inventory Manager is a component of the Asset Management of the ServerView Suite Enterprise Edition (in the following referred to shortly as ServerView Suite). The Inventory Manager allows you to request data of one or more managed servers and display it on the screen. You can also export the data from ServerView Suite and save it in various formats (e.g. CSV, ODBC). The data could include, for example, information on the model variant, the BIOS version or the processor type of a server. Once retrieved, this data can be stored in external media, e.g. a file or database. Thus you can incorporate it, for example, in a table (MS Excel) or a database (e.g. MS Access or SQL Server database) for evaluation. For examples see page 77f. Using the export data, you can pick out those servers in a network whose software or operating system versions do not conform to the current requirements or which are to be upgraded with, for example, new ServerView agents or BIOS versions to comply with the homogenization of the software landscape within an enterprise. The Inventory Manager also allows you to check how up to date the system software configuration (BIOS, firmware, ServerView agents and drivers) is. The Inventory Manager offers a convenient Web-based interface via which you can make all the necessary specifications for collecting the data you require. It offers complex task management for scheduled data collection. Export tasks can be scheduled. This means that you can have the retrievals of export data done asynchronously and automatically according to your individual needs and, for example, have the data sent to you by . 6 Notational conventions Introduction 1.1 Notational conventions The following notational conventions are used in this manual: V Caution I This symbol points out hazards that can lead to personal injury, loss of data or damage to equipment. This symbol highlights important information and tips. Ê italic fixed font semi-bold fixed font [Key symbols] Table 1: Notational conventions This symbol refers to a step that you must carry out in order to continue with the procedure. Commands, menu items, names of buttons, options, variables, file names and path names are shown in italics in descriptive text. System outputs are indicated using a fixed font. Commands to be entered via the keyboard are written in a semi-bold fixed font. Keys are shown according to their representation on the keyboard. If uppercase letters are to be entered explicitly, then the Shift key is shown, e.g. [SHIFT] - [A] for A. If two keys need to be pressed at the same time, this is shown by placing a hyphen between the two key symbols. References to text or sections of text in this manual are shown with the chapter or section heading and the page on which that chapter or section begins. Screen outputs Please note that the screen output is dependent in part on the system used and therefore some details may not correspond exactly to the output you will see on your system. You may also see system-dependent differences in the menu items available. 6 Inventory Manager

2 Inventory Manager The Inventory Manager comprises a convenient Web-based user interface, and the Export Service. The Inventory Manager allows you to take the data of one or more managed servers and: Display it on the screen (via Show Inventory on the Server List tab, see chapter Displaying export data on the screen - Show Inventory on page 15), Save it in different formats (e.g. CSV, ODBC), which you can store in external media for further analysis. These tasks can be started directly or scheduled to start automatically later: With Export now on the Server List tab you define and start an export task directly (see chapter Defining and starting an export task- Export now on page 21). Via the task management on the Tasks tab you define scheduled export tasks which are executed automatically (see chapter Scheduled export tasks on page 41) I An export task can be performed for several servers simultaneously. But export is only possible if a server can be reached. If you have selected a blade server for an export task, data concerning the server blades belonging to this blade server is supplied. You will not receive any data concerning the management blade of this blade server. The Export Service reads the inventory data of the servers from the ServerView database. Here the data is updated at regular intervals. If necessary you can also force an update of the data in the database (via the Forced Update button on the Server List tab, see section Updating the ServerView database on page 11). I The checking and updating of the inventory data in the ServerView database is done via the Inventory Service, which is started automatically and runs in the background. For more information see the chapter Inventory Service on page 79. Inventory Manager 7

Starting the Inventory Manager Inventory Manager 2.1 Starting the Inventory Manager You start the interface for the Inventory Manager via an icon on the start screen of the ServerView Suite. How to start the ServerView Suite is described in the System Administration within a Domain guide. Figure 1: Icon for starting the Inventory Manager Click on the icon. The start page of the Inventory Manager is then displayed. 8 Inventory Manager

Inventory Manager First window of the Inventory Manager 2.2 First window of the Inventory Manager After the Inventory Manager has been started, the following first window is displayed: Figure 2: First window of the Inventory Manager The file tree on the left of the window shows the servers in accordance with the ServerView server list. Inventory Manager 9

First window of the Inventory Manager Inventory Manager The icons in front of the objects have the following meanings: All servers of All servers The server can be managed. Export is possible. The server cannot be managed. The blade system or the PRIMEQUEST server can be managed. Export is possible. The blade system or the PRIMEQUEST server cannot be managed. The server blade or the partition can be managed. Export is possible. The server blade or the partition cannot be managed. Table 2: Icons indicating the status of the server The status display refers to the last status of the ServerView server list. It can only be up to date if ServerView has been started. The right-hand area of the first window contains three tabs: Server List tab Via the Server List tab you can display the inventory of selected servers on the screen (Show Inventory), define and start a one-off export task (Export now), and force an update of the data in the ServerView database (Forced Update). Tasks tab The Tasks tab provides you with an overview of the scheduled export tasks for a server. You can use this tab to define, change and delete scheduled export tasks (Task Management). Log Files tab The Log Files tab allows you to obtain the status of the export tasks performed. 10 Inventory Manager

Inventory Manager Updating the ServerView database 2.3 Updating the ServerView database The basis for an export task is the ServerView database, which contains all the inventory data of the servers entered in the ServerView server list. The data in this database is checked at regular intervals by the Inventory Service of the Inventory Manager and, if necessary, updated. If you want to force an update of the data in the interim, e.g. because new servers have been added to the server list, click the Forced Update button on the Server List tab. Figure 3: Server List tab When you start a forced update, the system checks for each manageable server in the server list whether current data exists for that server and, if applicable, updates the data. I If new servers are added to the server list after ServerView installation, it can take a while for the inventory data for these servers to be added to the ServerView database. By default the first data collection occurs at 6:00 a.m., i.e. possibly not until the next day. In this case you should force an update with Forced Update. Inventory Manager 11

General operating instructions Inventory Manager 2.4 General operating instructions This section describes the general buttons which you will find on the tabs of the Inventory Manager and in the windows of the Inventory Manager Wizard Tabs The tabs of the Inventory Manager offer you the following general buttons: Refresh button The Refresh button lets you update the data displayed from the ServerView server list. Help button The Help button lets you call help for the Inventory Manager Additional windows The windows of the Inventory Manager Wizard have a scrollable window in the lower part from which you can obtain information about the respective window. 15 3 Displaying export data on the screen - Show Inventory The Inventory Manager allows you to display the hardware, software, firmware and driver data directly on the screen. This is done via the Show Inventory button on the Server List tab, which opens automatically after you start the Inventory Manager. Figure 4: Server List tab You can select the servers for which the action is to be performed in the table. If you do not make a selection, the action will be performed for all servers shown in the table. I If you select a blade server, the task will be performed for the server blades that belong to it. If you select a PRIMEQUEST, the task will be performed for the PRIMEQUEST and partitions that belong to it. You then click the Show Inventory button. This opens the window Choose object(s) and options you want to use for export, in which you define which data is to be exported. Inventory Manager 15

Show Inventory Figure 5: Show Inventory SV ServerList Exports data from the ServerView server list to the selected servers. The SV ServerList contains information on the server. SV GroupList Exports data from the ServerView server list to the selected servers. The SV GroupList contains information on the groups. SV GroupServerList Exports data from the ServerView server list to the selected servers. The SV GroupServerList contains the assignment of groups to servers. ServerList Exports a list containing information about the server. ContainerList Exports a list of the containers for a server, such as Baseboard, SCSIDevice, LANSystem, SubsystemContainer. 16 Inventory Manager

Show Inventory ServerIdList Exports a list containing server IDs, such as the server name and IP address. InventoryList Exports a list containing the full inventory data for the server. All component types are taken into account and listed in the InventoryList. For an overview of the contents of the exported lists, see the chapter Contents of exported lists on page 71. The grayed-out areas are not relevant for the Show Inventory function. You start the Show Inventory task by clicking the Finish button (see below). The Cancel button lets you quit the Inventory Manager Wizard. The Help button lets you call help for the Inventory Manager Wizard. Inventory Manager 17

Show Inventory Starting a Show Inventory task You start the Show Inventory task by clicking the Finish button in the window Inventory Manager [Wizard Step 1 of 3]. This opens the Inventory Window. Figure 6: Inventory Window The Inventory Window is structured like an index system. For each of the selected lists, a tab with the corresponding name is created. The tabs in turn are in table format, and contain the data of a list (= export object) for all selected servers, with the columns of the table representing the attributes of the relevant list. At the beginning of the Show process, all tabs are empty. As soon as the data for a list is acquired, it is entered in the associated tab. The processing sequence does not have to correspond to the arrangement of the lists in the tabs. Throughout the entire data acquisition process, a progress indicator is displayed on the right below the table. This shows how much of the data has already been retrieved. 18 Inventory Manager

Show Inventory Controlling a Show Inventory task You control the Show Inventory process via the buttons Stop, Close and Show Error Logs. Stop stops the data acquisition process. The index system remains open so that all data acquired so far is still visible. Close cancels the data acquisition if it is not yet finished and closes the Inventory Window. Show Error Logs opens the Show Inventory Error Logs window, which gives an overview of the errors and warnings that have occurred so far while the data is being read from the database. You can click this button at any time. Figure 7: Show Inventory Error Logs window As long as no errors have occurred, the window is empty. If errors have already occurred when you click the button, they will be shown in the Show Inventory Error Logs window in chronological order. An error message comprises the name of the list, the server and the error message text of the issued command. You can exit the error message window by clicking the Discard or Keep buttons. Discard deletes the displayed error messages, while Keep retains them and they will be output again the next time Show Error Logs is clicked. Inventory Manager 19

Show Inventory Ending a Show Inventory task If the Show Inventory action has been completed and has revealed errors, the error message window opens automatically to indicate the errors which occurred. This is important for checking the results, because the display of a table for a list only indicates that data from at least one of the selected servers was supplied. Only if the error message window contains no error messages for this list is the data complete. When you close the Inventory Window, the error message window is also closed. 20 Inventory Manager

4 Defining and starting an export task- Export now The Inventory Manager allows you to save the data in different formats (e.g. CSV, ODBC), which you can store in external media (e.g. in a table (MS Excel)) or a database (e.g. SQL database) for further analysis. To do this, you must specify when issuing the task, which data is to be exported in which format and to where. You start a one-off, non-scheduled export task with Export now via the Server List tab. Figure 8: Server List tab - Export now You can select the servers for which the export task is to be executed in the table. If you do not select a server, the action will be performed for all servers shown in the table. I If you select a blade server, the task will be performed for the server blades that belong to it. If you select a PRIMEQUEST, the task will be performed for theprimequest and the partitions that belong to it. You then click the Export now button. This opens the window Choose object(s) and options you want to use for export, in which you define which data is to be exported. Inventory Manager 21
