CURRICULUM VITAE Main Focus of Research and Academic work Training Teachers for using English as a Medium of Instruction Training English Language teachers. Research into the design and compilation of a syllabus for training English Language teachers in an integrated model,. Special Contribution to the field of Research and Teacher Training 1. Development of a profile for effective English medium of instruction. This profile is now used for the training of pre-service and in-service teachers. 2. This profile has also proved effective for the development of criteria assessing teachers English Language Proficiency for accreditation purposes. 3. Development of English medium of Instruction modules for training pre-service teachers. These modules are based on research conducted for my PhD studies. This University is currently the only university in South Africa that offers more than a generic course for training teachers to teach through medium of English. Development of Special tools for teacher Training in accordance with research on the use of Intelligent Tools by by Wiggins and McTeigh (2004) : 1. A Lesson Wheel based on the profile of an effective English Medium of Instruction teacher first developed for my Ph.D. 2. A Writing tool developed to help Academic students with the planning and writing of a literary essay 3. A Research Tool designed to help Honours and 4 th Year students with the development and writing of a research project 1

2 4. A Meta-cognitive game for helping teachers focus on the attainment of metacognition in the classroom. 5. An assessment tool developed in conjunction with one of my colleagues. This assessment tool assists teachers in continuous assessment as required by the NCS. 6. A Tool for Poetry analysis developed in conjunction with another colleague. This tool assists the teachers in analysing unseen poems for proper preparation.
