These installations can have a national, Pan European or global roll out. Normally the selection of routers is done by specification comparison. This is only a very small portion of the connectivity chain and gives no guarantee that the installation will work. It starts with the robust communication platform and process connectivity like serial, digital and analog connection.. 3 The building blocks of the Router The connectivity from the local Router to the 3G network, is defined by the following components and the cooperation between them: The radio module used inside the Router and the 3G network technology. Internal process radio module in combination with the OS (Operating System) Router SIM card settings and configuration possibilities Different APN causes different configuration settings and regular software updates are needed to meet network updates. Maintaining this synergy, management of these building blocks is necessary. Offering hosting environments as a service to maintain this synergy as device and SIM card management guarantees a better insight and maintenance of the complete network. 3

4 Maintaining Connectivity. Additional Information Scope of supply It is of utmost importance that the scope of supply, with reference to the connectivity is clear. With this scope of supply, the liability is defined. If the customer only wants to buy Routes out of the box, the only guarantee he can expect is the guarantee that comes with that box. This is totally different from the expectations one might have about connectivity. The biggest mistake made is to think that, with installing a simple GPRS modem, connectivity is achieved. The request from the customer is changing to a solution, a ASP variant is emerging: we pay a subscription per connected device per month and no hassle with loss of connection is tolerated. The 3G engine (Radio module, OS software and update support, SIM card and configuration capabilities) determines the ability and stability of the connection from the Router to the 3G platform. As listed in the specifications, most manufacturers of wireless modems or Routers uses several different radio modules, resulting in several different software packages supporting the radio module and to make it communicate with the OS of the Router. Only a few manufacturers, like Sierra Wireless, not only produce the radio module, but support the OS and network environment as well. This results in one software package to support, declining the possible errors to occur. To manage the connectivity, RAAF has several tools to accomplish this. The AMS platform is a hosting environment for Radio module management; Router OS update management and configuration file management. In fact AMS is Central management of remote equipment based on an advanced and distributed Machine-to-Machine services platform. In managing the configuration of the routers and to keep it in shape, RAAF uses the AMS platform. The core of this hosting platform is managing registration and configuration. The management of AMS is done by RAAF, ensuring: Subscription Router software update, registration Routers Purchase list (serial number), registration all Routers when activated (coupling Purchase and active Routers), Data base storage configuration-file The management of the configuration files. Due to configuration data-base management and automatically connecting to the AMS platform by switching on of the Router results in zero button configuration setting and unattended deployment. This gives a mayor advantage in the deployment and service of large systems. Repair can be done by replacement in case remote trouble shooting is not possible and can be done by unskilled personnel. 4 4

5 Unattended Router Deployment. In larger projects, unattended deployment Routers is requested, preventing every Router to configure separately. In pre-sales, the (golden) configuration file of this customer and application is established. This configuration file is stored in the database (AMS hosted environment). As an example: Purchase Department orders 100 Routers; the 100 Series numbers are allocated to this order, to the customer and to the AMS database. The Routers are delivered with a default configuration file to Route to the AMS platform, when switched on. D-base mining results in the match Series number and golden configuration file. If the Router is switched on at location and the connection cannot be established, DOA or dead or arrival is a fact, down grading the advantage of wireless communication with the installation. The problem with a standard SIM card with subscription is that with testing the complete communication chain, the SIM card must be activated, with direct payment of the subscription of the SIM card as result. With the KCC solution, we can test the communication chain by activating the SIM card, but after testing the communication, the SIM card is put in sleeping mode. This testing is without charging and paying for the subscription. 5

6 Additional Information SIM card. Th e rem o va ble S I M (subscriber identity module) card securely stores the service-subscriber key (IMSI) used to identify a subscriber on mobile (telephony) devices (such as mobile phones, modems, Routers and computers). SIM cards store networkspecific information used to authenticate and identify subscribers on the network. The most important of these are the ICC-ID, IMSI, Authentication Key (Ki), Local Area Identity (LAI) and Operator-Specific Emergency Number. The SIM also stores other carrier specific data such as the SMSC (Short Message Service Centre) number, Service Provider Name (SPN), Service Dialling Numbers (SDN), Advice-Of-Charge parameters and Value Add- Xs2M and M2M. In order to maintain the Router to function as a member of the communication chain, the hosting platform for device management is decisive. This infrastructure gives you the ability to connect, from the local installation to you central software. This ability is not a machine to machine solution, but gives you access from you central station to all your local installations. This is what we define as Xs2M; access to your machine. In managing all the data linked to this SIM card, routing like direct to the internet or via a private APN, data bundles, defining user groups and invoicing, accessing the NOC (Network Operation Centre) of the telecom provider, makes the management of a complete network possible. With the aid of the NOC access, the SIM card can be put in a sleep mode and after the device is energized on location, the invoicing can start. Also for service and for diagnostics in case the connection fails, the SIM management is an important link. Defining M2M is problematic; RAAF defines process connectivity and one can use the next diagram; using a wireless network as access to your process, gives you the possibility in communicating with your process with the aid of a SCADA package or data storage in your d-base applications. 7 Global Managed Wireless Network. In managing a large number of locations in a network, it is important to connect the Router to the SIM card in your management system. It is possible to have SIM card management or device management separately. This gives you the possibility to monitor the SIM card, but tells you nothing about the status of the according Router. The hosting environment RAAF offers is a integrated Device and SIM card management platform. In case of malfunction of a connection, we can determine the router with according SIM card for quick diagnostics. Depending on the request of our customer, one can connect to this infrastructure and monitor the complete wireless network, hence adding to your service level agreement and your customers satisfaction by reacting quick and professional in case of failure.
