3 Preface The Asset Standards Authority (ASA) develops, controls, maintains, and publishes standards and documentation for transport assets for New South Wales, using expertise from the engineering functions of the ASA and industry. The Asset Standards Authority publications include the network and asset standards for NSW Rail Assets. Scope and application This Specification describes the general requirements for identification labelling to be provided on all items of electronic, electrical and electro-mechanical signalling equipment supplied to Transport for NSW (TfNSW) or to contractors supplying equipment to TfNSW. This document shall be read in conjunction with the procurement specification that refers to it. The minimum general requirements expressed herein shall be augmented or reduced by the requirements of the particular specification. 2. Labels 2.1 Labelling of equipment Each piece of signalling equipment installed on the network shall be clearly identified by means of a suitable label permanently attached to the fixed structure on which the equipment is mounted. The label shall be installed in a prominent position and it shall identify the equipment as it appears in the relevant signalling documentation, for example, a Signalling Plan or circuit book. Labels and printing shall be compact in size, but large enough to be read with normal eyesight at a distance of 600 mm. This size requirement will be relaxed where a label of this size would be too large to fit the item of equipment. 2.2 Equipment labelling Each unit shall be clearly identified by means of a suitable label permanently affixed to the outside of the unit, bearing the information listed in Section 3.2 below. On very small units, a reduced amount of label information may be permitted, as described below. Labels and printing shall be compact in size, but large enough to be read with normal eyesight at a distance of 600 mm. This size requirement will be relaxed where a label of this size would be too large to fit the item of equipment. 2.3 Terminal identification Terminals for external connections on electrical equipment shall be clearly identified with their number and function, by means of suitable permanent labels affixed adjacent to each terminal. Enclosed transformers and other nominated units shall be fitted with a schematic diagram as described in Section 3.4 below. This may, if convenient, form part of a unit's main identification label. 6 2.4 Materials and fixing Requirements for materials and fixing include the following: labels shall be of rigid metal or engraved plastics flexible labels of paper, metal or plastic film are not acceptable on nominated items of equipment, the information may be applied directly to the surface of the unit labels shall be affixed by permanent means such as screws, rivets or other mechanical fixings. The use of adhesives is not acceptable inscriptions shall be applied by stamping, engraving, silk-screen printing, photo anodising or equivalent permanent process. Inscriptions that may deteriorate due to fading or abrasion are not acceptable 2.5 Labelling on packaging Where it is specified that an item is to be delivered in some form of packaging, each package shall be labelled as specified in Section 3.2 below. 3. Label information 3.1 English language All label inscriptions shall be clearly understandable, unambiguous, and written in English language. 3.2 Information on labels Equipment identification labelling shall include at least the first four items of information listed below. The other items shall be included where applicable, and where the size of the unit allows for the provision of more detailed information: identification of manufacturer year and month of manufacture serial number model and version number specification nominal output voltage and output current input voltage, input current schematic diagram State of NSW through Transport for NSW Page 6 of 7

7 component overlay (on printed circuit modules) 3.3 Serial numbers Each signalling safety relay and electronic module, and nominated non-vital electronic module shall be labelled with a unique serial number. 3.4 Schematic diagram The schematic diagram shall show input and output terminals, terminal functions and nominal terminal voltages. On items other than enclosed transformers, the schematic diagram shall be provided only when specifically requested. State of NSW through Transport for NSW Page 7 of 7
