2 Page 2 San Sebastian Catholic Church November 3, 2013 Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time ALL-POWERFUL YET CARING GOD It used to be that when I thought, Old Testament, I thought of narratives written many centuries before Christ. Then I learned that today s passage from the book of Wisdom was written less than one hundred years before Jesus came along. These words were so contemporaneous with Jesus that he himself conceivably could have written or spoken them. He certainly lived them. The Wisdom reading is a poetic prayer celebrating a Creator-God before whom the universe is like a grain of sand, yet who is still lovingly concerned with every individual. This is the God whom Jesus reveals, with unlimited power over all creation, yet watching out for sinners climbing trees. Zacchaeus was no ordinary tax collector, but the chief tax collector, and a wealthy man. But he wasn t too proud to run ahead and clamber up into a sycamore tree just to get a glimpse of Jesus. Maybe, sinner though he was, he recognized in this wandering preacher the object of the Wisdom poet s adoration. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. 3 Página 3 Parroquia Católica de San Sebastian 3 de noviembre de 2013 Trigésimo Primer del Tiempo Ordinario DIOS TODOPODEROSO PERO COMPASIVO Cuando yo pensaba en el Antiguo Testamento, me imaginaba narraciones escritas muchos siglos antes de Cristo. Luego aprendí que el pasaje de hoy del libro de la Sabiduría fue escrito menos de cien años antes de la venida de Jesús. Esas palabras eran tan contemporáneas para Jesús que él podría haberlas escrito o dicho. Él ciertamente las vivió. La lectura del libro de la Sabiduría es una oración poética que celebra a Dios Creador ante quien el universo es como un grano de arena, pero amorosamente atento a cada individuo. Éste es el Dios a quien Jesús revela, con poder ilimitado sobre toda la creación, pero buscando pecadores montados en árboles. Zaqueo no era un recaudador de impuestos ordinario sino el jefe de los recaudador, y un hombre rico. Pero no era demasiado orgulloso para adelantarse corriendo y subirse a un sicómoro sólo para poder ver a Jesús. 4 Page 4 San Sebastian Catholic Church November 3, 2013 Parish and Community Activities Mark your calendar : Christmas Dinner & Dance Coming Up Friday December 6, 2013 First Class Relic of Blessed John Paul II The Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine will host this relic during the day Monday, November 11. The relic, a vial of the Blessed blood drawn in the days prior to his death, will be welcomed at Mass at 10am. Other services during the day include the prayer of the Angelus and Rosary at 12noon and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy at 3pm. The day will conclude with the praying of the rosary at 6:30 pm followed by a Solemn Mass at 7pm. At the conclusion of each service the faithful will be given the opportunity to venerate the relic. Holy cards depicting Pope Paul II will be distributed to the faithful who will use this to touch the relic (thus making the holy card a third class relic). 9 Page 9 San Sebastian Catholic Church November 3, 2013 Parish Ministries October is Respect Life Month Our spiritually adopted babies are in their 5th month of womb time. At 20 weeks, this marks the half way point to birth. The baby is very active; his mother can feel him move and stretch, particularly when she is resting. He can kick so hard against the uterine wall he may dent it! Ouch! Happy the mom who may have a rare calm baby; you both may get a good night sleep. Our Holy Father, Francis, reflected in his homily, God surprises us, He asks our fidelity, and He is our strength. This was also the experience of the Virgin Mary, the Holy Father continues, At the message of an angel she does not hide her surprise. It is the astonishment of realizing that God, to become man, chose her; a simple maid of Nazareth: not someone who lived in a palace amid power and riches, but simply someone who was open to God and put her trust in him, even without understanding everything. Each woman must ask her self: Do I fear what God might ask of me; or do I let myself be surprised by God even if it is not my plan? Do I truly let God into my life? If so, you will make room for an unexpected turn of events, like a pregnancy and Trust Him. We pray for you all expectant families! Thank you God for surprises! Drop off ALUMINUM CANS (Beer & Soda Only) behind the Knights Hall; drop off NEWSPAPERS in the bin located in the front east parking lot; drop off CELL PHONES etc. in the Gathering Space. WE CANNOT ACCEPT PLAS- TIC BOTTLES, PLASTIC BAGS, PHONE BOOKS, OR CARDBOARD. Box Tops for Education - Look for the official Box Top for Education on different food products. We also accept coke reward Codes, Sunny D Labels, and Kellogg's Family Reward Codes Donation Box will be located in the gathering space.
