Using Cloud Services In Canada, eh! Justin J. Ngan, Manager Advisory Services: GIS & Analytics Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Presented on September 23, 2014 at the Esri Canada User Conference Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
Proposition: Sometimes, I have 20+ GIS servers to work on those really big jobs. You can too! And it will cost far less than the price of a single server.
Cloud Services: Framing the Discussion No physical infrastructure to maintain, ever Not colocation Services piped through the internet You access servers, storage, applications, services of application all through the internet Dynamically allocated resources Your hardware can move around and your hardware can spawn new instances to meet increased demands, and go away when not needed
Cloud Services: Framed Chrome, Internet Explorer ArcMap ArcGIS Online (also PaaS) Microsoft Office 365 through the web Microsoft Azure Google Apps Engine Amazon AWS (also PaaS)
Cloud Services: Why is the cloud so compelling? It s quite affordable and much cheaper than any colocation or private infrastructure in the short and long run Server to Server comparison may be close, but Now factor in: Racks Rooms Energy Cooling People Failures Missed Opportunities Paying for what you aren t using (Reduced ROI) Sleep
Cloud Services: Why is the cloud so compelling? Total Cost of Ownership (Using AWS TCO Comparison Tool) Case: 4 virtual servers, 64 GBs RAM, 32 vcpus, 100% utilization, 30 TB SAN 3 Yr. Total Cost of Ownership Colocation AWS Server $188,616 $30,043 Storage $129,840 $29,777 Network $ - $ - IT-Labor $ - $ - Total $318,456 $59,820
Cloud Services: Why is the cloud so compelling? It s scalable so you don t have to pay up front for power you aren t ready to use and you don t have to wait to upgrade your hardware when you need more Needs v. Capacity (The Guess) needs capacity waiting for capacity wasted capacity
Cloud Services: Why is the cloud so compelling? Agility You can t plan for everything You want to have capacity when you need it You want to have the right tool for the job You want to release capacity when you don t need it
The Dark Cloud Some where along the way Along came a dark cloud You can t use Cloud services Understand the origins U.S. Patriot Act (post September 11, 2001) Data residency laws It can t be about about rights (parallels in Canada) It can t be about access (mutual sharing agreements) It can t be about security So, what is it about and who is it hurting? Possible solutions: Don t store personal data Data encryption and tokenization
Use Cases Following are cases when cloud services may be an ideal solution. Problem Cloud Solution
Use Cases: Unknown Demand Problem: How do you get what you need when what you need will vary and can t be estimated with confidence? Cloud solution: Plan appropriately (complexity and near term needs) and scale up when you need!
Use Cases: Overcoming Resource Issues Problem: IT resources, particularly in noncompetitive environments, are prioritized by a steering committee. Priorities don t always match operational needs and expectations. Cloud Solution: Meet operational needs and expectations by using services like ArcGIS Online or Amazon AWS. If resources are available later, reassess.
Use Cases: Overcoming Storage Issues Problem: Storage can be expensive and there may be physical limitations. Storage is not just size, it s also performance, data governance, and accessibility. Cloud Solution: Use cloud services to manage your data storage. Security and retention can be managed. Backups simplified. Access can be improved and security can be enhanced.
Use Cases: Brute force solutions Problem: Sometimes, you need a lot more power than you have; I mean, a lot more! For example, tiling basemaps for 68,000 sq.km to be the common source of valid information. Cloud Solution: pay-as-you go is one of my favorite things about cloud computing. If I need 20 or more servers for an important job, I can do it in a fast and cost-effective way.
Use Cases: Incubation Problem: In order to be on the leading edge, you need to try good ideas. Not all good ideas work out. Problem: In order to build good workflows with good tools, you need to be able to evolve them. Cloud solution: Use cloud services because you can avoid being stuck with a high capital expenditure.
Use Cases: Keeping Focused on Core Services Problem: You have a role and specific responsibilities. What do you want to spend your time on? Do I manage 3 rd party backend software or just use the service? Cloud Solution: If you re focused on visualization and analysis, use the services that hide the backend details. ArcGIS Online improves access to higher order GIS services!
How to get started Know the basic issues (of problems, of environment, of hardware, of limits, of politics ) Learn Esri s ArcGIS Online (AGOL) Amzon s cloud services (AWS) Garner support Help people understand and get the facts
Back to the Proposition So how do you get a lot of servers and storage that are reliable and cost effective? ArcGIS Online: You may already have it available to you as part of your Enterprise License Agreement We re at an Esri User Conference connect with your Esri sales manager
Back to the Proposition Amazon AWS: For new users, the first 350 hours are free That works out to about 31.5 days After that, one server will cost about 0.03 cents an hour 3 24 hours 365 days X X X 20 Servers = $5,256 hour day year If you needed all 20 servers running every hour of the day! Cost of one single decent blade server with no housing (or anything else you need): > $7,500
