1 UNIT 10: The impact of social issues on public services (LEVEL 3) Learning outcomes By completing this unit candidates will have examined social issues in Britain and their impact on the public services. They will have explored issues such as racism and the growing support for the extreme right wing political parties, the resurgence of nationalism and the concept of multiculturalism. Candidates will produce evidence to meet the assessment objectives in order to demonstrate their understanding of: the impact of multicultural society on the public services current social issues extremist views civil unrest. Assessment objectives 1 Analyse current social issues in Britain and their impact on the public services 2 Explore and identify the issues raised for the public services by operating within a multicultural society 3 Explore and summarise extremist views and their impact on British society Knowledge, understanding and skills Types of social issues may include: poverty homelessness unemployment social depravation youth crime The impact on the public services may include: funding resources operations recruitment The impact of: multicultural Britain impact of media reporting of crime, eg Yardie crime racist intolerance religious intolerance institutional racism devolution and nationalism Issues which may be considered: political extremism religion nationalist movements anti terrorist laws moderate opinions government responses OCR Level 3 Nationals in Public Services 1

2 Assessment objectives 4 Investigate and report on the impact of civil disobedience on the public services Knowledge, understanding and skills Impact of civil disobedience could include: anti war protests fuel price protests local demonstrations against hospital closures environmental campaigns Assessment This unit is centre assessed and externally moderated. In order to achieve this unit candidates must produce a portfolio of evidence showing that they have met all of the assessment objectives. Candidates should demonstrate sufficient understanding of the subject matter to be able to explain the development of social change. They will be able to describe the effects of local and or national issues on society and how, in turn, this impacts on the services provided by the public services. Portfolios of work must be produced independently. They will need to be made available, together with witness statements and any other supporting documentation, to the OCR Visiting Moderator when required. Centres must confirm to OCR that the evidence produced by candidates is authentic. An OCR Centre Authentication Form is provided in the Centre Handbook and includes a declaration for assessors to sign. It is a requirement of the QCA Common Criteria for all Qualifications that proof of authentication is received. Guidance on assessment and evidence requirements Candidates may provide portfolio evidence for this unit using a range of suitable and appropriate techniques. This may include written data, the use of video, audio presentation and PowerPoint within the body of the portfolio and display evidence. Where presentations or displays have taken place for which evidence cannot be easily included within the portfolio evidence, assessor Testimony/witness statements must be included, signed by the assessor(s), and supported by appropriate evidence (handouts, slides etc). Delivery of this unit would benefit from direct input from the pubic services and centres may benefit from establishing appropriate links with service and recruitment personnel. Wherever possible learning activities should be related to authentic materials provided by the services. 2 OCR Level 3 Nationals in Public Services
