Ward/Unit Philosophy of Care Type and availability of Service: 24 hour / 24 beds +2 HDU Paediatric 0-17 years, all specialities We aim to provide a caring, safe, comfortable, child friendly environment for children, young people and their families. They shall be cared for by specially trained staff using the family centered care approach. Each child will be respected as an individual with differing needs and their care shall be planned accordingly in partnership with their parents, taking into account their physical, psycological and social needs. We believe that health education is an important aspect of family centered care and will be a continuous theme throughout the families stay. Children will be offered play therapy which is suitable for their age and condition and relevent to their learning needs. We acknowledge the differing needs of young people in hospital and will provide them with seperate facilities and encourage self care as far as possible. We aim to provide a suitable learning environment for student nurses, enabling them to practice reasearch based nursing care under the supervision of a qualified childrens nurse. Information regarding Nightingale Nightingale Ward is a general medical and surgical ward caring for children aged 0-17 yrs. We have between 14 & 24 beds open to acute admissions (depending on the time of year) and 6 day case beds open between 0745 & 1800hrs. The day case unit cares for any children requiring planned ENT, Max-fax, Orthopaedic, Opthalmic and general surgery. Subsequently, any children requiring medical investigations such as MRI, CT, Renal Scans and metabolic investigations are cared for on the day case unit. We also have a 2 bedded High Dependancy Unit (HDU) which allows us to care for sick children who require high dependancy care until they are well enough to return to the main ward or require transfer to paediatric intensive care units at other hospitals. 2. To provide our staff with good career and educational opportunities, in a pleasant and rewarding environment. 2.4 The Trust s Values To act with integrity - provide an open, honest and informed approach to everyone who uses our services. To respect the dignity of patients, recognising that each patient has their own individual s needs. To give all our staff the opportunity to reach their individual potential whilst they are working for the Trust. 3. Learning Environment 3.1 Is a model/framework for nursing care used by nursing staff in this area? Model of nursing ~ based on Activities of Living.
4 Care is delivered using an individualised holistic approach. Each shift is staffed by between 3 &5 registered nurses (depending on how many beds are open). Research and evidence based practice is promoted and well utilised within the area. There is a strong nursing team within the area, who work closely with the multi disciplinary team Is there an identified strategy to meet continuing education needs of qualified staff? Preceptorship of newly qualified staff is in place and utilised appropriately. All nurses are encouraged to maintain continued professional development. 3.3 Are there plans to make changes to the placement area in the next year that would affect student allocations? None. 4.
