1 YOUNG INVESTIGATORS NETWORK - WHAT S IN IT FOR YOU (THE YOUNG INVESTIGATORS)?

2 Why establishing a Young Investigator Network? For the individual scientists Getting a strong academic network to support current scientific work and future carrier and collaboration. For the project Platform for the research collaborations, common identity and for recruiting young scientists. Platform for actively involving young investigators the large project meetings (organising sessions, presenting, chairpersons, being active in the debate). For the University Platform for further educating and retaining the next talented generation of researchers with a strong position, tradition and network in this area of research.

3 YOU have to define the activities of the forum The Project/Grant is the starting point and frame for the forum. In order to be attractive and successful the forum should: Give the YI s something they do not get any plane else! Make it about yourselves and your science Be anchored in the local research environments. What can young investigators offer each other: Introductions to research projects and fields (broader horizon) Access to methods and resources (advancing capabilities) Presenting projects and early results to peers (feedback and training) Synergies across experiments (common success) International outlook (boosting career) Networking (inspiration, knowledge sharing, help, excitement)

4 Networks have many forms examples from UNIK FFP Muscle, Fitness & Metabolism: 7-8 meetings over the years, usually followed by dinner or reception. Genetics and Epidemiology: 5-7 meetings over the years, usually initiated with a lunch. Animal Model Network: 2-3 meetings followed by drinks or dinner, then continued using their contacts and networks informally for collaborations. Social Sciences and Humanities: Are starting up now, focus on common and differed methodological approaches Consider to split the activities up for RA, PhD and Post Docs at least some of the time - You are at different places in your careers and approaches to

5 Meetings have may types of content Have a concept or theme for any meeting not just a updates from everyone. Make a nice invitation in poster format. A golden rule: Always have some presentations from young investigators. Mutual introductions (and presentation techniques): Speed networking: Meeting new people Practicing your elevator pitch Networking Pecha Kucha: Get to the PowerPoint in 20 Slides Then Sit the Hell Down Written profiles on the internet Senior scientists introducing research fields, methods or facilities as invited speakers. International hot topic speakers (in town for PhD defences, other meetings, or invited by the network for 1-2 days of visiting).

9 Outcome of our networks Young scientists with a broad network and ability to use it. Young scientists with great skills for presenting and discussing science and hosting meetings and discussions. Invitation from the senior scientists to involve the young scientists in organising the large meetings - To make them as vibrant and enthusiastic as the meetings for the younger scientists. Young investigators joining up during international conferences. Collaborative grants based on initiatives from the young investigators. Success in the planned research projects and many novel collaborations among research groups initiated based on contacts between the young scientists.
