2 2 [Deficiency-heat clearing herbs]: Qing Hao, Di Gu Pi, Bai Wei, Yin Chai Hu, Hu Huang Lian Shi Gao Gypsum Fibrosum -acrid, sweet, very cold - Channels entered: LU, ST 1. Clears heat, Sedates fire, relieves irritability and quenches thirst 2. Clears LU heat 3. Clears heat in the ST and ST channel 4. Clears heat and promotes healing of sores, burns and eczema - Dosage: 15-60g; When it is used in decoction, it should be crushed into fine powder and pre-decocted for min. prior to adding other herbs; for topical use, use calcined Shi Gao to promote healing * Han Shui Shi Mirabilite - salty, very cold - Channels entered: ST, KD 1. Clears heat and purges fire 2. Topical use to sedate fire and toxins - Dosage: 10-15g; It should be crushed into fine powder prior to oral or topical administration - C.I for patient with deficiency and cold of the SP and ST Zhi Mu Radix Anemarrhenae - bitter, sweet, cold - Channels entered: LU, ST, KD 1. Clears heat and sedates fire 2. Nourishes yin and moisten dryness 3. Nourishes yin and clears deficient fire 4. Generates fluids and quenches thirst 5. Neutralizes unwanted effects of warm herbs

3 3 - Dosage: 6-12g - CI in patients with diarrhea, SP or ST deficiencies, or KD deficiency Huang Qin Radix Scutellariae - Channel entered: LU, GB, ST, LI 1. Clear heat and dries dampness 2. Clears heat and sedates fire 3. Clears heat and eliminates toxins 4. Cools blood and stops bleeding 5. Calms and stabilizes the fetus - Dosage: 3-10g - Use with caution as it may damage ST qi and injure SP yin Huang Lian Rhizoma Coptidis - Channel entered: HT, LIV, ST, LI 1. Clears heat and dries dampness 2. Sedates fire 3. Clears fire toxin - Dosage: 2-10g - Use with caution in patients who have cold, yang deficiency, yin deficiency, or deficiency of the SP and ST Huang Bai Cortex Phellodendri - Channels entered: KD, BL, LI 1. Clears heat and dries dampness 2. Sedates fire and eliminates toxins 3. Clears deficient heat - Dosage: 3-10g - Use with caution in patients with deficiency and cold of SP and ST; Not suitable for long term use - CI in patients with general yang deficiency, or SP or KD yang deficiency

4 4 Sheng Di Radix Rehmanniae - sweet, bitter, cold - Channels entered: HT, LIV, KD 1. Clears heat and cools the blood 2. Nourishes yin and promotes generation of body fluids - Dosage: 10-30g - CI in patients with SP and ST qi or yang deficiencies or those with abdominal fullness or diarrhea Xuan Shen Radix Scrophulariae - bitter, sweet, salty, cold - Channels entered: LU, ST, KD 1. Clears heat and nourishes yin 2. Eliminates toxins and disperse nodules - Dosage: 10-15g - CI in patient with dampness, deficiency and cold of the SP and ST - Xuan Shen is incompatible with Li Lu Mu Dan Pi Cortex Moutan - bitter, acrid, cool - Channels entered: HT, LIV, KD 1. Clears heat and cools blood 2. Invigorates blood circulation and disperses blood stasis - Dosage: 6-12g - use with caution in patients with deficiencies and cold - CI in patients who are pregnant or have excessive bleeding during menstruation Chi Shao Yao Radix Paeoniae Rubrae - bitter, cool

5 5 - Channel entered: LIV 1. Clear heat, cools blood 2. Dispel blood stasis, relieves pain 3. Reduces swelling from sores and abscesses 4. Clears heat and relieves eye pain - Dosage: 6-15 g - CI in patients with deficiency and cold - Chi Shao is incompatible with Li Lu Jin Yin Hua Flos Lonicerae - sweet, cold - Channels entered: LU, ST, LI 1. Clears heat 2. Clears heat and eliminates toxins 3. Treats diarrhea or dysentery caused by toxic heat - Dosage: 10-20g Lian Qiao Fructus Forsythiae -bitter, cool - Channels entered: LU, HT, GB 1. Clears heat 2. Clears heat and eliminates toxins 3. Promotes urination - Dosage: 6-15g - Use with caution in patients with diarrhea, sore throat that are neither red nor painful Chuan Xin Lian Herba Andrographis - Channels entered: LU, ST, LI, SI 1. Dries dampness and stops diarrhea - Dosage: 6-15g - Large dose or long term use of Chuan Xin Lian may injure ST qi - Use with caution during pregnancy Qing Hao Herba Artemisiae Annuae - bitter, acrid, cold - Channels entered: LIV, GB, ST 1. Clears heat and treats malaria 2. Clears Yin-deficient heat 3. Cools blood 4. Clears summer heat or damp-heat 5. Clears LIV-heat and brightens the eyes - Dosage: 3-10g; Qing Hao should only be cooked for a short period of time as a decoction - Use with caution in patients who have deficiency and cold of the SP and ST Di Gu Pi Cortex Lycii - sweet, bland, cold - Channels entered: LU, KD 1. Cools blood and relieves steaming bone sensations 2. Clears LU heat 3. Clears heat, cools blood, and stops bleeding - Dosage: 6-15g - Use with caution in patients with deficiency and cold of the SP and ST, characterized by loose stools - CI in patients with exterior wind-cold or wind-heat conditions - Use with caution in patients who have true cold but false heat
