1 PLSS 424: FLORICULTURE COURSE SYLLABUS & OUTLINE SPRING 2013 I. COURSE DESCRIPTION Production, timing and marketing of major floricultural crops grown in the commercial greenhouse and some field crops. Each student will have an assigned project. II. OBJECTIVES KNOWLEDGE OBJECTIVES: 1. Identify major commercial floricultural crops. 2. Describe general production schedules including timing and cultural requirements of the major commercial floricultural crops. 3. Create and organize a profitable greenhouse crop rotation plan. PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES: 1. Produce quality commercial floricultural crops. 2. Observe and/or participate in procedures involved in producing a floricultural crop. 3. Identify cultural problems of floricultural crops. 4. Design mixed container arrangements. III. IV. PREREQUISITE PLSS 423 (Greenhouse Management) or consent of instructor. COURSE CONTENT This course is comprised of lecture and labs. Both the lecture and the laboratories will encompass two major units: production and business management considerations. 1. PRODUCTION Includes lecture material on three major categories of commercial floricultural crops: potted plants, cut flowers, and bedding plants. Lecture notes are supplemented by the course textbook and "hands-on" experience of producing several of these crops in the teaching greenhouse and HRC. Each student will be required to make 2 reports on an assigned floriculture crop. 2. BUSINESS MANAGEMENT CONSIDERATIONS Includes lecture material and laboratories to explain the importance of crop scheduling and other business considerations. Each student will be required to plan a one-year greenhouse rotation using floricultural crops. V. TEXT REQUIRED: Floriculture Principles and Species, 2 nd Edition, by Dole, John and Harold Wilkins. Prentice Hall Other References: Ball Redbook Reading of trade journals such as Greenhouse Grower, Greenhouse Manager, or Grower Talks 1

2 VI. VII. VIII. FIELD TRIP Participation in a class field trip to commercial greenhouses is a requirement of this course. READING REQUIREMENTS It is the responsibility of each student to follow the course outline. It is the student's responsibility to complete reading assignments as the topic is discussed in lecture. LABORATORIES Attendance at all labs is very important due to the hands on nature of the labs. IX. GRADING SYSTEM There are 1000 points possible in this course. The grading scale is as follows: points = A points = B points = C points = D Less than 679 points =F Points will be earned in this course in the following manner: 400 points HOUR EXAMS (4) - over lecture material, textbook readings, other assigned readings, and laboratories. No makeups except when arranged prior to time of exam. If you are ill on the day of the exam, call my office or send me an message prior to the exam. Exam 1 February 8, 2013 Exam 2 March 1, 2013 Exam 3 March 29, 2013 Exam 4 April 26, points FINAL EXAM Wednesday, May 8, :50 9:50 a.m. or as according to SIU Final Exam Schedule. 50 points QUIZZES - (5) over lecture material, textbook readings, other assigned readings, and laboratories. Quizzes will not be announced prior to the time at which they are given. Quizzes will be 10 points each and at least 6 will be given during the semester so students may drop their quiz with the lowest grade. Quizzes may be given during lecture or lab. No makeups. 100 points GREENHOUSE CROP ROTATION PROJECT - Due May 3, 2013 Crop Rotation will include a plan of floricultural crops for a greenhouse for one year. 100 points CROP REPORTS (2) -Two written reports and two oral presentations on minor crops are a requirement of this course. 2

3 1. Students will research a minor potted crop. A written report (outline form) on a minor potted crop is due during lecture on February 25. Students will present their findings to the class during lecture/lab on February Students will research a minor cut flower crop. A written report (outline form) on the minor cut flower crop is due during lecture on April 8. An oral report on a minor cut flower crop is also due on April 8 during lecture/lab. 120 points LECTURE/LAB ASSIGNMENTS Includes scheduling of several crops, lab write-ups, and other lecture/lab assignments. 50 points ASSIGNED FLORICULTURAL PROJECT A 5-week independent floricultural project in the campus greenhouse will be agreed upon by both student and instructor by the 3 rd week of classes. 130 points LABORATORY ACTIVITIES - (13 labs x 10 points) Requires participation during lab activities during the scheduled lab, keeping assigned crops in optimum condition between lab periods, and participation in field trips. Attendance is extremely important because of the hands-on nature of the lab and because of crop timing. Each lab is worth 10 points. Fourteen labs will be held with the lowest score (including 0 s) dropped. Attendance is extremely important because of the hands-on nature of the lab. Students who attend lab, participate with good effort, and complete assignments will receive a 100% for that lab. Students who attend lab but are deficient with respect to effort or assignments will receive a 50%. Students who are absent from a lab will receive a zero for that lab. : BONUS: Each student will receive ½ bonus point for each lecture that he/she attends. This policy begins on January 23 and does not include exams. Attendance will be taken at 9:00 a.m. and you must be present at that time to receive your ½ point points = TOTAL POINTS FOR COURSE X. LATE ASSIGNMENT POLICY: Assignments should be turned in during lecture or lab on the date they are due. Usually if a student has several minor questions, the assignment can be put in my mailbox later that day with no point deductions. After the due date, ½ of a letter grade will be deducted for each day the assignment is late. The assignment will not be accepted later than 1 week after the due date. If special circumstances arise, communicate with the instructor. This should be done before the due date, not after. 3

4 XI. XII. ATTENDANCE POLICY: It is expected that students will be in lecture or lab except when they are ill. If a student is ill on the day of an exam, they need to call my office or send me an about their situation. Students will receive a ½ bonus point for each lecture they attend, provided they are not tardy. Due to the hands-on nature or travel involved, labs are almost impossible to make up. ACADEMIC HONESTY *The academic honesty policy will follow the Student Conduct Code, Section II, Article A. XIII. EMERGENCY PROCEDURES: Southern Illinois University Carbondale is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for study and work. Because some health and safety circumstances are beyond our control, we ask that you become familiar with the SIUC Emergency Response Plant and Building Emergency Response Team (BERT) program. Emergency response information is available on posters in buildings on campus, available on the BERT s website at Department of Public Safety s website (Disaster drop down) and in the Emergency Response Guidelines pamphlet. Know how to respond to each type of emergency. XIV. AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES (ADA) STATEMENT: I encourage all persons with disabilities requiring special accommodations to meet the expectations of this course to bring this to my attention as soon as possible. Written documentation of the disability should be submitted during the first week of the semester along with a request for special accommodations. Contact the SIU Disability Support Services (DSS) to facilitate requests: Woody Hall B-150, Carbondale, IL 62901, Mail Code 4705 DSSsiu@siu.edu Phone: (618) , Fax: (618) , TTY: (618) XV.
