The course is divided into four conceptual units. In Unit 1, we will (1) survey the major questions that developmental psychologists study, and (2) learn about prenatal development. Unit 2 covers biological, cognitive, language, and social development during the first two years. Unit 3 focuses on early childhood, while Unit 4 will continue with development during middle childhood. Course Outline Grades. Final grades are based on the total out of 360 possible points. Four exams count for 240 points (60 each), 10 online quizzes count for 40 points (4 each), 8 keyword activities count for 40 points (5 each), and 10 in-class activities count for 40 points (4 each). The cutoffs follow the standard distribution (see below) A Excellent B Good C Average D Unsatisfactory 215 or less F Fail Exams. Each exam is worth 60 points, in a multiple-choice format. Approximately 50% of the exam will come from material presented during class, while the remaining 50% will come from material in the textbook. Online Quizzes. In order to ensure that you are prepared for lecture, each chapter will include an online quiz worth 4 points. There are 12 quizzes total; 10 of the quizzes are required (40 points possible) the remaining two are counted as bonus points. Each test will be available on D2L for a 1-week period, and must be completed before class (by 9:00 am) on the scheduled duedate (see the course schedule on pages 4-5). Make sure that you are able to access your D2L account by the second week of the semester. Notes and the text book can be used during the quiz, and each quiz can be taken as many times as needed during the 1-week testing period. PLEASE NOTE THAT PARTIAL CREDIT IS NOT AVAILABLE: IN ORDER TO EARN 4 POINTS FOR EACH QUIZ, A PERFECT SCORE MUST BE OBTAINED. IF YOU DO NOT EARN A PERFECT SCORE, PLEASE RETAKE THE QUIZ BEFORE THE DUEDATE. Quizzes cannot be made up after the deadline. 1/21/13

2 Keyword Activities. To help you learn and remember the vocabulary of child psychology, you will complete 8 keyword activities. In particular, you will (a) select 3 keywords from each assigned chapter, (b) find 3 pictures that correspond to each of the keywords, and then (c) provide a short description for each picture+keyword. A schedule of the duedates for each activity, and instructions for completing them, will be distributed in class during Unit 2. Each activity is worth 5 points, for a total of 40 points. In-Class Activities. To help gauge your preparation for lecture, there will be 10 in-class activities throughout the semester. Each activity is worth 4 points (40 points total). Lectures. Attendance at all lectures is required. Roll will be taken daily, for each absence after the 6th, the final grade will be dropped by one letter (see Attendance, below). You are also responsible for reading the book. Lectures will follow the organization of the book, covering one to two chapters per week. Administrative Details Lecture Notes. Lectures will be presented in a variety of formats, including Powerpoint, computer whiteboard, and overheads. Lecture notes and study guides are not provided. To promote studying and review, all students are encouraged to find one or more study partners, and to regularly exchange copies of notes. If you miss class and need a copy of the notes, please post a request on D2L. Attendance. Attendance at all classes is required. Accordingly, you will be assigned a seat by the second week of the semester. Roll will be taken daily, and students who are not in their seats by 9:00 am will be marked absent. Please note that a tardy will count as an absence. If a student leaves early without the consent of the instructor, they will also be marked absent. A maximum of 6 absences is permitted without penalty. ABSENCES CANNOT BE EXCUSED, regardless of the reason (if you have extraordinary circumstances, please check with the instructor). This includes absences due to: illness, medical/family emergency, work/professional training, travel difficulties, doctor s appointments, etc. To help students maintain good attendance habits, each additional absence after the 6th will result in the final grade being lowered one letter grade. Please check attendance records on D2L after each class to make sure they reflect your attendance; errors must be corrected within 1 week of the absence date. Absences that are noted more than 1 week after the respective date will not be removed. Makeup Policy. Online quizzes cannot be made up (see below). A maximum of 1 exam may be made up, under the following circumstances. First, the absence must be for urgent personal or official business that cannot be rescheduled (e.g., military or professional training, SIUC-sponsored athletic events, medical emergency, school-closing due to snow, etc.). Personal matters that do not qualify as excused include: weddings, illnesses of roommates or other non-relatives, family vacations/trips, nonemergency medical exams, prescription-drug side-effects, blackouts and power outages, oversleeping, travel delays that occur during class dates, etc. Second, copies of official, dated, and signed documentation must be submitted, either before the absence if possible, or no more than 7 days after returning to class. In order to request an excused absence, an absence report form must be completed. Copies of the absence report form are available on the course website, and include instructions for documenting an excused absence. - Online quizzes: because 1 week is provided for each quiz, no makeups are available after the deadline passes. For quizzes, please make sure that you leave yourself enough time to retake each quiz, if necessary, and also make sure you have an alternative location (e.g., Morris Library) if you run into computer problems. - Keyword activities: a keyword activity may be submitted on the first day back after an absence, provided that official documentation and an absence report form are also submitted with the activity. - In-class activities: in-class activities be made up, provided that official documentation and an absence report form are submitted on the first day back after an absence. Each activity will be 2

3 posted on D2L the same day it is distributed in class; make sure to print it out, complete it, and bring with your documentation when you return to class. - Exams: in order to request a makeup exam, an absence report form and documentation must be submitted within 7 days of the exam date. A maximum of one makeup exam may be taken (all students will take the makeup during the final exam period); under no circumstances will an exam be given early. Classroom Etiquette. Students are expected to behave politely and professionally at all times in class. Unacceptable behaviors include: use of a cell phone, pager, or personal music player, websurfing, sleeping, reading a newspaper, or disrupting the lecture by making noise. When necessary, disruptive students may be asked to leave the class. Please note that computers are to be used only for notetaking. Students who use their computer for other purposes (e.g., , Facebook) will lose the privilege, and will not be permitted to use a computer during class. Course Resources. Copies of the textbook are on reserve at Morris Library, and are available for 2- hour checkout. Academic Honesty. All students are expected to read and follow the University guidelines regarding academic conduct. Any student in violation of these guidelines will, where circumstances merit (e.g., plagiarism, cheating during an exam), immediately receive a grade of F and be referred to the Dean for further review. Grading Questions. Questions concerning grading (e.g., correction of a grading error) must be submitted in writing. Note that all questions must be submitted within one week of the exam or assignment return date (i.e., the date we return the item back to you). Late Drop/Withdrawal. A late drop will only be approved when the student has documented the basis for the withdrawal before the end of the 8th week of class. A request for withdrawal will NOT be approved if documentation is not submitted until after the 8th week. Unsatisfactory performance. In order to maintain satisfactory performance in the course, all students should earn a grade of C or better on each exam. As a consequence, please note that any student who scores a D or lower on an exam may have a progress report sent to his or her respective Dean of Student Affairs. Students who fail to maintain satisfactory performance are also encouraged to schedule regular appointments with the professor and graduate instructor in order to evaluate their progress in the course. Emergency Procedures. Southern Illinois University Carbondale is committed to providing a safe and health environment for study and work. Because some health and safety circumstances are beyond our control, we ask that you become familiar with the SIUC Emergency Response Plan and Building Emergency Response Team (BERT) program. Emergency response information is available on posters in buildings on campus, available on BERT s website at Department of Safety s website (disaster drop down), and in Emergency Response Guideline pamphlet. Know how to respond to each type of emergency. Instructors will provide guidance and direction to students in the classroom in the event of an emergency affecting your location. It is important that you follow these instructions and stay with your instructor during an evacuation or sheltering emergency. The Building Emergency Response Team will provide assistance to your instructor in evacuating the building or sheltering within the facility. 3
