3 OUR MISSION TO HELP MEN, WOMEN, AND CHILDREN RESTORE THEIR LIVES WHEN THOSE LIVES HAVE BEEN INTERRUPTED BY ADDICTIVE OR MENTAL ILLNESS. DEAR FRIENDS OF MARYHAVEN, Our theme for the 2014 Annual Report represents four concepts which describe our past year perfectly: Helping, Expanding, Achieving, and Learning describe many of our accomplishments in Patricia Eshman Board Chair In 2013, we reported that we were building for the future; in 2014 we embraced and accepted that challenge to raise $2M for our Capacity Expansion Capital Campaign. In this report, we will share how our community has supported Central Ohio s oldest and most comprehensive behavioral health provider specializing in treatment for people with addictive illness, and the largest provider of behavioral health care in terms of number of patients cared for in Central Ohio. Despite an overwhelming demand for services, Maryhaven has been able to provide the highest levels of services in the history of the organization. In 2014, we provided care to over 9,000 patients and their families in Central Ohio. Although we strive for excellence in all that we do, we believe in challenging ourselves to become better by learning. We will continue to learn, explore, and research new ways of providing care. Our Maryhaven Addiction Research Institute (MARI) helps us to continue to reach for higher standards and innovative ways to learn and to care for the patients and families which we serve. Paul Coleman President and CEO We are proud to serve our community and we are grateful for the continued support we receive from so many of you. It is our sincere hope that you find this report to be inspiring, helpful, and hopeful for the future. We pledge to continue our mission of helping people restore their lives by providing the highest quality of behavioral healthcare services; by remaining fiscally prudent; and to achieve this with the same integrity and spirit with which we have provided care to over 207,000 patients and families during Maryhaven s 61 years of service to our community. 6 H ELPING CORPORATE VOLUNTEERS AND PARTNERSHIPS Recognizing the impact volunteers have on an organization, as well as in a community, the Corporate Volunteer program at Maryhaven was developed in Maryhaven has proudly hosted a variety of corporate groups including Grange Insurance, Nationwide Insurance, Walmart, L Brands, Huntington, SBC and Alliance Data. Maryhaven s Collaborative Outreach Team (MCOT) Pictured left to right: (front) Deborah Rambo-Foley and Nickole Warner (back); James Alexander, Executive Director of Homeless Programs, Amy Greene, and Thomas Adams. Volunteers want to know they have made a difference, and one of our goals is to show the impact of their time spent volunteering; the other is to create a win-win situation for our volunteers and our patients. Our intent is to foster an environment where volunteers will encourage patients and in turn be encouraged. During one of our events titled Dream Shoes, an L Brands volunteer stated I got more out of the experience than I gave ; comments such as these are how we measure our impact on what we are trying to achieve. MARYHAVEN S COLLABORATIVE OUTREACH TEAM (MCOT) Maryhaven s Collaborative Outreach Team (MCOT) continues to be a vital part of the community. The program s primary mission is to address the immediate and long-term needs of men, women, families and youth experiencing street homelessness through a collaborative team response approach using a system of care that promotes hope, health and wholeness. In 2014, MCOT successfully met the outcome measurements of the Homeless System in Columbus and Franklin County by achieving a 90% success rate in linking customers served to safe shelter or housing. L Brands volunteers work on Dream Shoes Project at our Women s Center. GAMBLING INTERVENTION PROGRAM I DIDN T THINK I HAD A PROBLEM... I REALLY THOUGHT I COULD HANDLE IT. TODAY I KNOW BETTER, I M IN A DIFFERENT PLACE THANKS TO MARYHAVEN STAFF. I M HAPPY, I FEEL HEALTHY, MY FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS ARE GREAT... WE RE IN A PLACE OF HEALING AND THAT IS UNBELIEVABLE. Pam, Gambling Intervention Program participant Have you ever felt the need to bet more and more money? Have you ever had to lie to people important to you about how much you gamble? These questions have become common and frequent for many Central Ohio residents. But thanks to funding from OhioMHAS and the ADAMH Board of Franklin County, Maryhaven s Gambling Intervention Program offers counseling and prevention services for problem gamblers and their families. Serving the Central Ohio area, Maryhaven offers assistance through the guidance of licensed counselors and staff members. Maryhaven is the sole agency in Franklin County offering this service and one of the top six best practices in the State of Ohio. Bruce Jones, Gambling Intervention Program Supervisor, says addiction is addiction but gambling is unique; it can go undetected for such a long time; unlike the addict, you can t smell it on their breath or see it in their eyes. 6 MARYHAVEN 2014 ANNUAL REPORT
7 E XPANDING CAPACITY EXPANSION CAPITAL CAMPAIGN REGIONAL SITES I CAME TO FIND HELP FOR MY SON, AND INSTEAD FOUND HELP AND HOPE FOR MY ENTIRE FAMILY. Maryhaven s main campus, located on the south side of Columbus. Recent over demand, caused principally by the opiate epidemic, has demonstrated our need to increase our capacity to treat patients. This past year has been a testament to the level of community support for Maryhaven. We are grateful for the financial support we have received in progressing towards our $2M Capacity Expansion Capital Campaign goal. Our plan is to begin the building and renovation process by mid June of 2015, providing eight additional beds for medical detoxification, four additional beds for adult inpatient, six additional beds for our Women s Center, new office space dedicated for program delivery, renovation of the Women s Center living area and family playground, and new furniture and equipment to accommodate additional patients and staff. CATERING BY MARYHAVEN With more than 15 years of experience, we cater to 17 different schools throughout the Columbus area and manage food service operations for all types of organizations and events. Our catering department has increased our catering revenues by 12% over FY13 and 179% over FY12, creating one of the fastest growing departments within Maryhaven. With the majority of the catering business coming from Columbus area charter schools, we have recognized that our potential is much greater and we will continue to grow and expand Catering by Maryhaven. Rita, Active Parenting Home Base Program participant, with family pictured above shown left to right: Tom, holding Connor, Shalena, Monica, Alex, Jordan and Rita. We have expanded treatment services in five counties; Union, Delaware, Morrow, Crawford, and Marion. All of our locations in these counties provide addiction recovery and mental health services to adults and adolescents. We were awarded funding from the Delaware Morrow Mental Health and Recovery Services Board to provide services in both the Delaware and Morrow County jails, and for an outpatient program for juvenile sex offenders in partnership with Delaware Juvenile Court. In addition, we were awarded an opportunity to expand our level of treatment through OhioMHAS funding as a participant in the Addiction Treatment Pilot Project, allowing us to provide medication assisted treatment for patients addicted to opiates in both Franklin and Crawford Counties. One family at our Union County office, Maryhaven at the Mills Center, has experienced first hand the impact our expansion is making in the surrounding counties. Rita came to Maryhaven at the Mills Center with the hope of finding help for her son, instead she found hope for her family, my family is on the road to healing and we have hope for the first time in a very long time and that feels really good. 8 A CHIEVING ADOLESCENT SERVICES Serena Stears, M.Ed., LPSC, Program Manager for Summit Academy at the Maryhaven School with adolescents during class It is our goal to help our patients achieve normal lives after their treatment here at Maryhaven, and this includes education, job training, and other life skills. Most of our adolescents at Maryhaven are referred to us by Franklin County Children Services and over half are diagnosed with both addiction and mental health needs. We are here to help them achieve their goals, their dreams, and to help them set higher standards for themselves. We offer programs such as GED and college focused educational opportunities; we also offer online classes to help prepare our patients for GED exams and help prepare them for college preparatory classes. In addition to education classes, we help our adolescent patients achieve their transition back into society by providing independent living skills training. We provide them with training that will help promote selfsufficiency through skills development in cooking, cleaning, financial literacy, and basic job search techniques. We feel a significant part of the healing process is working through and achieving a healthy family life. We provide a multi-layered program that includes counseling sessions with family members and caregivers to educate the patient s support system. MDFT (MULTIDIMENSIONAL FAMILY THERAPY) The MDFT Program was developed in 2008; and since then the program has doubled in staff and families served in the Franklin County area. In 2014, treatment outcomes showed a 65% reduction in substance use and 87% of adolescents remaining in the home after completing the MDFT program. The success achieved by the MDFT staff with the adolescent patients and their families has earned the program an exceptional reputation in Franklin County. STABLE CRADLE Former Women s Center patient and Stable Cradle participant, Roslyn with daughter, Kennedy (born healthy and drug-free while her mother was in the Women s Center). When our Women s Center began operation in 1953, it was our only program, a halfway house for women alcoholics. Today, the original program has evolved into Maryhaven s Women s Center serving adult women and often housing their infants and young children while their mothers participate in treatment. One component of the Women s Center which helps our women and their children stabilize and balance their lives is Stable Cradle. The program is a collaboration between The Wexner Medical Center at The Ohio State University and the Women s Center, providing mentors to meet the needs of pregnant substance abusing women. The program s primary goal is to help the women stop using drugs so they are able to deliver healthy, drug free babies. In 2014, forty pregnant women received care at the Women s Center and 31 healthy babies were delivered, potentially saving the community $31M in healthcare, justice system, and social services costs during the lifetime of these children. 8 Maryhaven s MDFT Team pictured left to right: Erin Parsons, Program Supervisor, Niquita McCaroll, Jenni Longo, Tia Reynolds, Susan Kennedy, Theresa Ferrara, Romell Graves, Jen Belemu, Linsey Shay, and Melanie Toth.

We believe strongly in our mission here at Maryhaven: Helping People Restore Their Lives. Our philosophy runs deeper: we will work harder and learn more about each case as it comes through our doors, treating each individual based on their own unique circumstance. Our Research Institute helps our clinical staff and counselors find new solutions and help improve methods of healing and recovering through science and research. We conduct ongoing research and clinical trials, and thus improve Maryhaven s service delivery. We also assisted in the development of guidelines for Ohio providers to improve medication assisted opiate dependence treatment. We take great pride in partnering with many educational institutions from around the country; including The Ohio State University, University of Cincinnati, New York University, Johns Hopkins, and Columbia University. Through these joint efforts we will continue to learn and explore methods for treatment and recovery, helping our patients right here in Central Ohio. THE CULTURAL DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION COUNCIL Maryhaven acknowledges and celebrates cultural differences which exist among our patients and staff. The Cultural Diversity and Inclusion Council is a group of individuals who bring with them a diverse set of attitudes, behaviors and beliefs. We encourage cultural awareness as a process of becoming sensitive to other cultures. Maryhaven strives to provide treatment that takes into account the differences in our community. In order to provide appropriate treatment services, Maryhaven seeks and trains staff to be aware of and sensitive to other cultures. THE LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL AND TRANSGENDER COMMITTEE (LGBT) The LGBT committee is a sub-committee of the Cultural Diversity and Inclusion Council, and the Committee s goal is to educate Maryhaven staff and patients by increasing social awareness, and collaborating with community partners by providing trainings, services, and alternative social activities.
