3 Polar Bear ABCs Help your child gain pre-reading and beginning reading and spelling skills. Your child can practice letter knowledge, handwriting skills, and letter sounds with some help from these cheerful polar bears! Cut out the polar bear cards on pages 3-7 and work with your child on the activities listed below. Activity Suggestions Arrange the polar bears in alphabetical order from A to Z. Spell your child s name with polar bears. If you need additional letters, write them on the blank polar bears. Spell the names of family members and friends. Play change the word using polar bears. Begin with the word cat, and then change the first letter to b for bat, h for hat, p for pat, s for sat, and so on. Practice letter formation in a tray of sand, salt, or rice. Place the polar bear card next to the tray and encourage your child to trace the letter in the sand. Sort the uppercase and lowercase letter cards into separate piles. Encourage your student to match each uppercase letter with the corresponding lowercase letter. Separate the consonants and vowels by sorting the polar bears into two piles. 9 Rhyming Polar Bears Icebergs are white, oceans are blue. These polar bear pairs need help from you! In this activity, your child can practice an important reading skill by matching the pairs of rhyming words. Instructions for All About Practice 1. Select the appropriate activity sheet for your child s level. We ve included words from Levels 1-4 of All About Reading so that everyone can play! 2. Cut apart the polar bear cards, mix them up, and place them on the table with the illustrations facing up. Have your child read the words aloud and match the rhyming pairs. 3. Continue until all of the pairs have been matched. Instructions for All About Practice 1. 15 Polar Bear Word Search Word search puzzles are a great way to practice reading and spelling skills, as well as a great way for children to have fun with words. In this activity, your child will search for words from specific levels of All About Reading and All About Spelling. Instructions for All About Practice 1. Locate the sheet that matches your child s current level in All About Reading. Have your child read each word in the list, and then locate it in the puzzle. 2. If your child is in All About Reading Level 4, use the Level 4, Level 5, Level 6, and Level 7 sheets. 3. Encourage your child to complete the puzzles from the previous levels as well. For example, if your child is currently in All About Reading Level 3, he could also complete the puzzles for Levels 1 and 2. Instructions for All About Practice 1. Locate the sheet that matches your child s current level in All About Spelling. Dictate each word to your child and have him spell it (orally or on paper). Then have him find each word in the puzzle. 2. Encourage your child to complete the puzzles from the previous levels as well. 23 Arctic Animal Fun Facts Polar bears live in the far north, but many other birds and animals live in the Arctic region as well. Explore sixteen different Arctic inhabitants in this fun fact booklet. Instructions 1. Cut out the Arctic animal fact cards on pages Place them in numerical order and staple along the left side to make a booklet. 2. Depending upon your child s reading ability, either read the Arctic animal facts to your child or have your child read them aloud. 3. After reading the booklet, ask a few comprehension questions: Which bird is sometimes called the clown of the sea? What color fur do harp seal pups have? What type of whale has a long tusk? Which animal spends the winter near the Bering Sea? Caribou are also known as. Arctic foxes change color seasonally, from brown or gray in summer to white in winter. 3. They are very hardy and live in burrows. Arctic foxes use their thick tails to keep warm. 1 Facts: 1. Arctic ground squirrels live in colonies with many other squirrels. 2. They eat seeds, berries, and grasses, and they hibernate during the winter. 3. The Arctic hare is also known as the polar rabbit and is larger than the average pet rabbit. 3 Facts: 1. The Arctic wolf is also known as a polar wolf or white wolf, and it is a subspecies of the gray wolf. 2. The Arctic wolf is smaller than other wolves. 3. Arctic wolves often live in caves and have white coats. 4 Facts: 1. Beluga whales are also known as white whales due to their white skin. 2. 26 Arctic Animal Fun Facts Facts: 1. Caribou are also known as reindeer. Antlers are found on both male and female caribou. 2. Caribou eat moss, lichen, grass, plants, and mushrooms. They eat approximately 12 pounds of food each day. 3. Caribou have large hooves that help when walking on snow. 6 Facts: 1. The musk ox has lots of hair and curved horns. It also has an odor that is quite strong. 2. Musk oxen live in large herds and eat vegetation. 3. They stand 4 to 5 feet tall at the shoulder and weigh about 500 pounds. 7 Facts: 1. A narwhal is a type of whale with a long, ivory tusk that can reach over 8 feet long. 2. Because of its long tusk, the Narwhal is sometimes called the unicorn of the sea. 3. A narwhal does not change color seasonally, but it does change color over the course of its life. 27 Arctic Animal Fun Facts Facts: 1. The polar bear is the largest meat-eating animal that lives on land. Polar bears are very intelligent. 2. Polar bears have snow white fur but their skin is black. 3. Female polar bears usually have two cubs, but sometimes as many as four. 9 Facts: 1. The ptarmigan is somewhat similar in looks to a chicken and some people call it a snow chicken. 2. Female ptarmigans lay four to fourteen eggs in a nest on the ground. 3. Ptarmigans are brown in the summer but turn white in winter. 10 Facts: 1. Puffins are black and white sea birds with colorful beaks. 2. Puffins can fly very well and are sometimes called sea parrots or the clowns of the sea. 3. Some of these include the harp seal, the bearded seal, the ringed seal, the harbor seal, and the gray seal. 2. Harp seal pups have white fur. 3. Seals have flippers and spend a lot of time in the water. They are very good swimmers. 12 Facts: 1. Snow geese are white with black-tipped wings. 2. Snow geese travel in large flocks during their seasonal migrations. They eat a wide variety of plants. 3. A female snow goose makes a nest on the ground and lays two to six eggs. 13 Facts: 1. The snowy owl is one of the largest owls in North America. Snowy owls become lighter in color as they age, and some end up almost entirely white. 2. Female owls lay three to eleven eggs in a nest on the ground. 3. 29 Arctic Animal Fun Facts Facts: 1. Walruses are brown and have thick blubbery skin and flippers. They also have long ivory tusks. 2. Walruses like to eat clams, but they also eat crabs, shrimp, and other sea creatures. 3. Many walruses spend the winter near the Bering Sea. 15 Facts: 1. The wolverine is one of the largest members of the weasel family and stands 14 to 16 inches tall. 2. Wolverines are good at climbing, and they are sometimes called skunk bears. 3. 30 Ingredients (for one child): 1 large and 2 small pancakes 1 Tbsp. powdered sugar 1 red grape 15 mini and 2 large chocolate chips 1 whole apple, peeled 1/8 cup coconut flakes Polar Bear Breakfast Here s a perfectly polar bear breakfast treat to enjoy on a wintry morning! Warm pancakes with some cool fruit on the side it s a yummy way to warm up your engine when it s chilly outside! This is one breakfast that your polar bear-loving little ones will love waking up to! 1/4-inch slice cut from the center of an orange 6 carrot slivers To make the polar bear pancake: 1. Make 1 large and 2 small pancakes from your favorite pancake recipe. 2. Place the large pancake in the center of a plate. 3. Place one small pancake on the large pancake, near the bottom edge. 4. Cut the other small pancake in half and position the two halves to form the ears. 5. Sprinkle the pancakes with powdered sugar until your polar bear is white. 6. Position two large chocolate chips to form the eyes. 7. Position the red grape on the small pancake to form the nose. To make the polar bear apple: 1. Cut slices from the sides of the peeled apple to create 1 large, 1 medium, 5 small, and 2 tiny circles. 2. Place the large apple slice on a plate. 3. Position the medium slice to form the polar bear s head. 4. Position five small slices to form the paws and snout. 5. Position two tiny slices to form the ears. 6. Arrange the mini chocolate chips to form the eyes, nose, and claws. Place your polar bear pancakes and your polar bear apple together on a large dinner plate. Garnish with a slice of sunny orange and some carrot slivers, then sprinkle with coconut flakes and powdered sugar to create a wintry scene.
