2 There are two kinds of panda bears, the giant panda and the lesser or red panda. They do not look alike. This Unit is about the giant panda. You may want to read about the red panda bears at the library or on the Internet. Panda bears once were classified as raccoons. Now most scientists classify them as bears. The giant panda is a very popular animal. People all over the world have fallen in love with the panda. Its body color is white with black legs, black ears, a patch of black circling each eye, and patches of black on its chest and shoulders. The giant panda has a teddy bear face. Look up the definitions of the words below, and write them on the lines. bamboo esophagus The giant panda has large jaw muscles which are needed to eat hard bamboo. A panda s forefoot has an extra thumb. This extra thumb is really an enlarged wrist bone. This helps it to hold and manipulate the bamboo. Giant pandas will eat large variety of plants. Bamboo is the main food they eat. They will eat from twelve to sixteen hours a day. The giant panda has a rough lining of its esophagus and stomach. 3 Panda Characteristics Scientists have scientific names for animals. The scientific name for giant pandas is Ailuropoda Melanoleuca. It means black and white bear. A giant panda is about five feet one fourth inches to six feet tall ( centimeters). A male giant panda weighs between 176 and 276 pounds ( kilograms). Females usually weigh about ten to twenty percent less than males. The giant panda can easily climb high into trees. Giant pandas have a heavy body, a very large head, rounded ears, and a short tail. The giant panda s fur is thick and coarse. It has an outer layer of fur which is coarse. The under layer of fur is wooly-like. Its fur feels oily when you touch it. 4 Baby Giant Pandas Look in some books or on the Internet to find a picture of a baby panda. You will be surprised to see how tiny they are. They are about the size of a chipmunk. Baby giant pandas are very tiny. They only weigh about 3 to 4 1/2 ounces ( grams) when they are born. When a baby panda is born it has a fine, white fur. It looks hairless when you view it at a distance. When a baby panda, cub is born it cannot see. A baby panda opens its eyes when it is about 45 days old. A baby panda does not have any teeth when it is born. It has a long tail. In a very short time a baby panda looks like a miniature adult. Within one month they have black and white fur like an adult panda. A baby panda begins to walk when it is about 75 days old. Panda cubs can start to eat bamboo when they are six months old. 5 Where Pandas Live Giant pandas in the wild, live only in some of the beautiful mountain ranges in central China in China. The government of China has set aside safe areas for them to live. Look in a book or on the Internet to find a map that shows where giant pandas live in China. Find China on a globe or world map. There are not many giant pandas on the Earth today. They are rare. Scientists think there about 1600 giant pandas in the wild today. There are a little over 200 in captivity. This is according to the organization called, Pandas International. China allows some zoos in the world to have giant pandas. Scientists and others are working to keep the giant panda from extinction. Do some research in books or on the Internet. 1. 6 More About Giant Pandas 1. How long do giant pandas live? The giant panda in the wild lives to about 15 years old. The giant pandas usually live longer in captivity. They have been known to live into their 20's and rarely into their 30's when they live in captivity. 2. Why are there not many giant pandas living in the wild? Giant pandas do not have many babies. They also have been losing their habitat for many years. When they lose their food supply they do not survive long. 3. Does a giant panda make sounds? Yes, giant pandas do make sounds. They do not roar like a bear. They make a bleating sound, something like a lamb. It is a friendly, greeting sound. They also make sounds like a bark, growl, huff and honk. 4. Do giant pandas live alone or in small or large groups? Giant pandas live in small groups that share a large territory of land.
