Here is a brief expanation of the use of the warning symbo. Safety IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS Read a instructions before using the air conditioner. *Compete the instaation requirements as described in the Instaation Instructions. Do not operate the air conditioner with the front pane removed. *Never cean air conditioner parts with fammabe fuids. The fumes can create an exposion or fire hazard. Hep us hep you Pease: - SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS -. FOR YOUR SAFETY DO NOT STORE OR USE GASOLINE OR OTHER FLAMMABLE VAPORS AND LIQUIDS IN THE VICINITY OF THIS OR ANY OTHER APPLIANCE. 5 Operating Your Air Conditioner To obtain the best possibe resuts from your air conditioner, it is important that you operate it propery. This section tes you how to set the contros and how to direct the cooed air. Starting your air conditioner Fre Hazard Do not use an extension cord. Doing so can resut in death, fre, or eectrica shock. Eectrica Shock Hazard Pug into a grounded 3-prong outet. Do not remove ground prong. Faiure to foow these Instructions can resut in death or eectrca shock. 1. Set the Fan Contro to the desired setting. LOW COOL - for seeping comfort MEDIUM COOL - for norma cooing HIGH COOL - for fastest cooing FAN ONLY - to circuate room air without cooing it 2. Turn the Thermostat Contro to the desired setting. You can adjust the air conditioner s cooing performance by turning the Thermostat Contro cockwise for more cooing or countercockwise for ess cooing. You wi need to experiment to find the setting which suits you best. IMPORTANT: If you turn the air conditioner off, or if the compressor turns off when you ower the Thermostat Contro, wait at east, 3 minutes before turning the air conditioner back on. If you don t wait, you may bow a fuse or trip a circuit breaker. 5
6 Changing air direction The air direction ouvers, in the top grie area of the front pane, contro the direction of the cooed air. Move the tabs in the direction you want the air to fow (right, eft, or straight ahead). 6
7 Caring for Your Air Conditioner Proper care of your air conditioner heps ensure onger ife of the unit and ower operating costs. Foow these instructions carefuy. Ca your authorized Whirpoo service deaer for an annua checkup. Ceaning the front pane Exposion Hazard Unpug power cord from outet before ceaning air conditioner. Use ony nonfammabe ceaners. Faiure to foow these instructions can resut in death, exposion, fire, or eectrica shock. 1. Disconnect power cord from outet. 2. Remove the front pane from the air conditioner for ceaning. Press down at the top of the front pane to reease it from the top of the cabinet. 3. Pu the top of the front pane toward you. 4. Lift front pane up and away from the bottom spring cips. 5. Remove fiter from front pane by removing eastic band which hods it in pace and cean separatey. (See Ceaning the air fiter on page 8.) 6. Cean front pane with warm water, mid soap or detergent, and a soft coth. Rinse and dry thoroughy. 7. Wipe contro pane cean with a soft, - dry coth. continued on next page 7
8 8. Repace fiter and hod it in pace with eastic band. 9. Repace the front pane. Locate bottom of pane on the spring cips. Press down on top edge of front pane and push it toward the air conditioner to secure the upper tabs. 10. Pug in the power cord. Ceaning the air fiter The fiter is ceanabe. A cean fiter heps remove dust, int, and other partices from the air. Check every 2 weeks to see if fiter needs ceaning. 1. Unpug power cord. 2. Remove front pane from cabinet. (See Ceaning the front pane on page 7.) 3. Remove the eastic band hoding the air fiter in pace. Remove the air fiter. 4. Cean fiter by using a vacuum ceaner or, if very dirty, wash fiter with warm water and a mid detergent. Air dry thoroughy before repacing. Do not use a hot air dryer on fiter. 5. Repace fiter, eastic band, and front pane. 6. Pug in power cord. 8
9 Performing annua maintenance Your air conditioner needs annua maintenance to ensure steady, top performance throughout the year. Ca the service company recommended by your deaer to: inspect and cean the cois and condensate water passages. Check fan. The compressor and fan motor are seaed and need no oiing. The expense of an annua inspection is the consumer s responsibiity. OR If you are famiiar with eectrica appiances, you can do the inspection and maintenance yoursef. If you choose to do so, foow these steps: NOTE: Do not ift, push, or pu any white beaded foam (expanded poystyrene) parts. 1. Disconnect power cord from outet. 2. Remove the front pane. (See Ceaning the front pane on page 7.) 3. Remove the air conditioner from the window. Eectrica Shock Hazard Unpug power cord from outet before servicing. Be sure no iquid gets Into the motor, eectrica contro box, or compressor terminas. Faiure to foow these Instructions can resut in death, eectrica shock, or serious injury. Excessive Weght Hazard Use 2 or more peope to move and insta air conditioner. Faiure to do so can resut in back or other Injury. continued on next page 9
10 4. Remove side curtains. Side curtains out to their fuest width. From the back side, remove the Phiips-head screws (A) hoding the curtains to the cabinet. 5. Remove the sotted hex-head screws (0) hoding the top channe. 6. Remove the sotted hex-head screws (C) on the sides of the cabinet. 7. Hoding both sides of the cabinet, carefuy ift the cabinet off the base. 8. Wrap the motor, eectrica contro box, and the compressor termina box in pastic fim to make sure no water or other iquid gets inside. Water or other iquids coud damage the insuation and cause serious mechanica probems. 9. Cean and hose out the base, cois, and condensate pans. Cean at east once a year, or more often if the condenser cois and pans coect dirt, sand, eaves, insects, or agae. Aso, cean if you detect an odor coming from the air conditioner. 10. Remove pastic fim from motor and eectrica parts. 11. Repace the air conditioner in the cabinet. Reattach top channe and side curtains. Tighten a screws. 12. Reinsta the air conditioner in the window. 13. Repace the front pane. 14. Pug in the power cord. NOTE: It is a good idea to wait 24 hours before starting the unit again. This aows time for a areas to dry thoroughy. The water from rainfa or from norma operation does not harm the components. Saving energy Improve your home s insuation. Sea a doors and windows. Cose the firepace fue. Cose binds or drapes on the sunny side of the house. Add window awnings. Keep the air fiter cean. Do not bock the airfow from the air conditioner with drapes or furniture. Ventiate the attic. High temperatures in the attic add to the cooing oad. 10 Try not to use heat-producing appiances during the hottest part of the day. Turn ights and appiances off when not needed. Keep heat registers and coo-air returns cosed. Use exhaust venting fans whie cooking, doing aundry, or bathing.
11 Troubeshooting Listed in the chart beow are the most common probems consumers run into with their air conditioners. Pease read through this chart before caing for service. It coud save you the cost of a service ca. PROBLEM Air conditioner won t run Air conditioner bows fuses or trips circuit breaker Air conditioner turns bn and off OR does not coo the room CHECK THE FOLLOWING Is the air conditioner pugged into a ive circuit with proper votage? Has the time-deay fuse bown or circuit breaker tripped? Is the Fan Contro set to OFF? Is the Thermostat Contro set correcty? Has the oca power faied? Are time-deay fuses being used? Is an extension cord being used? Do not use an extension cord with this or any other appiance. Are you waiting three minutes before trying to restart the air conditioner? Is the air fiter cean? Are the inside evaporator cois and the outside condenser cois cean? Is there excessive moisture or heat in the room (open container cooking, showers, etc.)? Is the Fan Contro set too ow? Is the Thermostat Contro set too ow? Norma operating sounds When your air conditioner operates normay, you wi hear sounds such as: Pinging or cicking as water dropets hit the condenser. Water dropets hep coo the condenser. Air movement from the fan, especiay on HIGH COOL setting. Cicks from the cooing cyce. Sounds may aso be caused by house construction - such as vibration of the air conditioner due to wa construction or an unsteady window mounting area. 11
