2 Introduction The world renowned Beethoven Orchestra Bonn of the Beethoven Festival and Beethoven Hall, will make its first historic tour to China to celebrate the turn of the year 2011/2012, under the direction of the renowned maestro Stefan Blunier and featuring internationally acclaimed Chinese cellist Trey Lee. One of the most important stops will be Guangzhou the Guagnzhou Xinhai Concert Hall is currently discussing with the orchestra to perform around New Year Eve period, December 30 or 31, 2011, to celebrate yet another new year of friendship between Germany and China. Hailing from the city of Bonn, childhood home of Ludwig van Beethoven, the Beethoven Bonn has over 100 years of history and is one of the leading s of Germany and the world. Residing permanently at the Beethoven Hall in Bonn, the also plays an important role in the internationally renowned Beethoven Festival each year. Since its inception, the has been associated with numerous celebrated composers and conductors including such preeminent figures as Richard Strauss, Paul Hindemith, Max Reger, Karl Böhm, Sergiu Celibidache, and Kurt Masur. As the musical ambassador of Bonn and Germany, the promotes the city with its concerts around the world as well as with its CD recordings to great acclaim. We are currently seeking a supporter/sponsor for the Beethoven Bonn New Year s eve period concert in Guangzhou. It will be a meaningful event not only to support a leading German s first ever China tour, but also to generate community goodwill for this significant event marking a German-Chinese cultural collaboration. 4 About the Performers Stefan Blunier, Music Director of Beethoven Orchestra Bonn The Swiss-born conductor Stefan Blunier opens the season with performances of Tannhäuser and Mahler Symphony No 8 at the BeethovenFest Bonn. As a symphonic conductor he has guest conducted many s in Europe and the Far East including WDR Cologne, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Orchestre National de Belgique, Duisburg Symphony, Orchestre National de Lyon, Bern Symphonieorchester and the Danish National Radio Symphony. He has been appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the Orchestre National de Belgique from the 2010/11 season. Having risen through the ranks of German opera houses becoming Music Director and Chief Conductor of the Staatstheater Darmstadt from , Blunier has guest conducted at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Opera de Montpellier, Norwegian National Opera, Hamburg Staatsoper and the Komische Oper Berlin where he conducts Prokofiev s Love of the three Oranges this season. He makes his debut at English National Opera with the original version of Henze s Elegy for Young Lovers in spring Stefan Blunier formed the Ensemble für Neue Musik in Essen and has conducted many contemporary works, an area of special interest, as well as the works of Zemlinsky, Pfitzner, Reger, Busoni, Schoenberg and Sibelius. 5 Chinese Cellist Trey Lee ( has been making a sensation across continents since winning First Prize at the International Antonio Janigro Cello Competition. Hailed a Miracle by GRAMOPHONE and a Master of subtle transition by The STRAD, Trey Lee enthralls audiences with his virtuoso playing that combines intellectual sophistication with emotional depth and sensitivity. Trey Lee s l debut at Carnegie Hall won him a standing ovation with critic Anthony Tommasini from the NEW YORK TIMES declaring him the excellent cellist with enveloping richness and lyrical sensitivity. In his collaboration with the Netherlands Philharmonic at the Royal Concertgebouw Hall, Trey Lee again received a standing ovation with the critics praising him a Star Musician. Trey s recent performances include a world premiere tour with Finnish Avanti!, a tour with the Munich Chamber, as well as a special concert initiated by United Nations Secretary General Ban-Ki Moon at the United Nations General Assembly Hall, alongside Tan Dun, Sumi Jo and Lu Jia. Trey Lee has been featured by major media including the FINANCIAL TIMES, CNN, and CCTV. He was also the focus of the acclaimed documentary Outstanding Young Chinese Musicians by Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK). In 2009, Italy s most influential newspaper, IL CORRIERE DELLA SERA, heralded him as one of China s four classical music Golden Boys & Girls alongside pianists Lang Lang, Yundi Li, and Yujia Wang. ELINA VAHALA, Violinist ( In December 2008, Elina Vähälä was presented to the worldwide audience with her stella performance at the televised Nobel Prize Ceremony (when Finnish President Ahtisaari was awarded.) Prior to this television appearance, Vähälä has already been one of the most sought-after instrumentalists in the international music scene. Winner of the 1999 Young Concert Artists International Auditions in the US, and prize winner of the 2000 Joseph Joachim Violin Competition in Germany, as well as the Lipinsky-Wieniawski competition in Poland at Page 5 of 6

6 age 15, Vähälä performs with major s across continents. She made her debut at age twelve with the Sinfonia Lahti, and since then, has collaborated with this Gramophone Award-winning regularly. During the past seasons, Vähälä performed with the Minnesota, Simón Bolívar Youth, at the MIAGI festival in South Africa, as well as the Konzerthaus in Berlin and the Barbican in London. Vähälä plays an Antonio Stradivari violin, built in 1678 and generously loaned by the Finnish Cultural Foundation. INRICH ALPERS, Pianist ( As First Prize winner of the 3rd International Telekom Beethoven Competition in Bonn, Germany, and Laureate of Canada's Honens International Piano Competition, German pianist Hinrich Alpers appears in recitals, with s, and in chamber music concerts worldwide. His first solo CD, recorded at The Banff Centre, has been released in fall 2008 and his performances are often recorded for radio and television broadcast. As the recipient of the 2008 Juilliard William Petschek Piano Debut Recital Award, Alpers made his acclaimed Carnegie Hall debut in In recent years, Alpers has been invited to perform in the world renowned Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival as well as the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival.
