Music Director Jaap van Zweden and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra welcome internationally-renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman as the featured soloist. Undeniably the reigning virtuoso of the violin, Itzhak Perlman enjoys superstar status rarely afforded a classical musician. Beloved for his charm and humanity as well as his talent, he is treasured by audiences throughout the world who respond not only to his remarkable artistry, but also to his irrepressible joy for making music. September 2014 marks the beginning of the 25 th anniversary season of the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, the home of the Dallas Symphony. Born in Israel in 1945, Mr. Perlman was propelled national recognition with an appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show in He won the prestigious Leventritt Competition in 1964, which led to a burgeoning worldwide career. Since then, Itzhak Perlman has appeared as violin soloist with every major orchestra and in recitals and festivals around the world. Mr. Perlman has further delighted audiences through his frequent appearances on the conductor s podium. He has performed as conductor with the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Boston Symphony, National Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the symphony orchestras of St. Louis, Detroit, Dallas, Houston, Pittsburgh, Seattle, Montreal and Toronto, as well as at the Ravinia and Tanglewood festivals. Internationally, Mr. Perlman has conducted the Berlin Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, London Philharmonic, English Chamber Orchestra, and the Israel Philharmonic. The 2013/14 season takes Mr. Perlman to both new and familiar major centers around the world. In Fall 2013, he joins the Cleveland Orchestra as soloist for their opening-night gala, performs Tchaikovsky with the Toronto Symphony under the baton of Peter Oundjian, and embarks on an eight-city recital tour of Asia with pianist and longtime collaborator Rohan De Silva. His conducting appearances include subscription concerts with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Baltimore Symphony, and he tours extensively in recital and orchestral concerts in cities across North America. Mr. Perlman continues to celebrate the rich

3 tradition of Jewish music with various performances in support of his Eternal Echoes project. Further to his engagements as violinist and conductor, Mr. Perlman makes multiple speaking appearances this season, including in Orlando at Rollins College, Greensboro at Guilford College and Palm Beach at the Society of the Four Arts. In 2003, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts granted Mr. Perlman a Kennedy Center Honor celebrating his distinguished achievements and contributions to the cultural and educational life of the United States. He has performed multiple times at the White House, most recently in 2012 for Israeli President and Presidential Medal of Freedom honoree Shimon Peres; and at a State Dinner in 2007 for Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh. Mr. Perlman was honored to take part in the Inauguration of President Obama in 2009, premiering a piece written for the occasion by John Williams alongside cellist Yo-Yo Ma, clarinetist Anthony McGill and pianist Gabriela Montero. He proudly possesses four Emmy Awards and fifteen Grammy awards. He performed at the 2006 Academy Awards and at the Juilliard School Centennial gala, broadcast nationally on Live from Lincoln Center. One of Mr. Perlman s proudest achievements is his collaboration with film score composer John Williams in Steven Spielberg s Academy Award winning film Schindler s List, in which he performed the violin solos. Mr. Perlman devotes considerable time to education, both in his participation each summer in the Perlman Music Program and his teaching at the Juilliard School, where he holds the Dorothy Richard Starling Foundation Chair. Kahn Music Directorship Jaap van Zweden, Music Director of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra since 2008, has risen rapidly in little more than a decade to become one of today s most sought-after podium artists. In addition to his position with the Dallas Symphony, in the 2014/15 season van Zweden will enjoy his third season as Music Director of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. Maestro van Zweden is a frequent guest conductor with many prestigious orchestras across the globe, from the Berlin Philharmonic to the New York Philharmonic to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, where he returned in May-June 2014 to curate the Chicago Symphony s three-week festival "Truth to Power" focusing on music of Britten, Prokofiev and Shostakovich. Additionally, among his critically-acclaimed guest engagements have been those with the Cleveland and

4 Philadelphia Orchestras, Boston Symphony, Munich Philharmonic, Orchestre National de France, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Tonhalle-Orchester Zurich, and his BBC Proms debut conducting the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic in Bruckner s Eighth Symphony. Highlights of his 2013/14 season included subscription debuts with the London Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and Deutsches Sinfonie-Orchester Berlin, performances with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, and return visits to the New York Philharmonic, Orchestre de Paris and the Rotterdam and London Philharmonic Orchestras. Also in 2013/14, Maestro van Zweden toured China with the Hong Kong Philharmonic and made his return to the Verbier Festival. In addition to an extensive symphonic repertoire, opera plays an important part in Maestro van Zweden s career. With the Dallas Symphony he has presented concert performances of Beethoven s Fidelio and Act 1 of Wagner s Die Walküre. He has conducted La Traviata and Fidelio with the National Reisopera, Madama Butterfly at the Netherlands Opera, and concert performances of Verdi s Otello, Barber s Vanessa and Wagner s Die Meistersinger, Parsifal and Lohengrin at the Concertgebouw with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic. In his seventh season as Music Director of the Dallas Symphony in 2014/15, Maestro van Zweden leads subscription concerts in the acoustically-renowned Eugene McDermott Concert Hall in the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, performances regularly hailed by music critics as superbly prepared, brilliantly accomplished and deeply moving (The New York Times), robust in spirit (MusicalAmerica.com) and most thrilling in recent memory (The Dallas Morning News). In March 2013, van Zweden conducted a heralded two-week European tour with the Dallas Symphony, which included performances of Mahler s Sixth Symphony, Richard Strauss s Suite from Der Rosenkavalier, Wagner s Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde, Steven Stucky s Elegy and Korngold s Violin Concerto (with soloist Hilary Hahn) in Eindhoven, Amsterdam, Vienna, Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Hannover. He continues to lead the Dallas Symphony at its summer residency at the Bravo! Vail festival in Colorado. Van Zweden was named Musical America Conductor of the Year 2012 in recognition of his critically acclaimed work as Music Director of the Dallas Symphony and as a guest conductor with the most prestigious U.S. orchestras. Jaap van Zweden has made numerous acclaimed recordings which include Stravinsky s Rite of Spring and Petrushka, Britten s War Requiem, and the complete Beethoven and Brahms

5 symphonies. He has recently completed a cycle of Bruckner symphonies with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, to great critical acclaim. He has recorded Mahler s Symphony No. 5 with the London Philharmonic (LPO Live), and Mozart Piano Concertos with the Philharmonia Orchestra and David Fray (Virgin). His highly-acclaimed performances of Lohengrin, Die Meistersinger and Parsifal are also available on CD/DVD, the latter of which earned Maestro van Zweden the prestigious Edison award for Best Opera Recording in For the Dallas Symphony s DSO Live record label, Maestro van Zweden has released the symphonies of Tchaikovsky (Nos. 4 and 5), Beethoven (Nos. 5 and 7), Mahler (No. 6), and the world-premiere recording of Steven Stucky s concert drama August 4, 1964, for which Stucky was nominated for a Grammy Award. Born in Amsterdam, van Zweden began his conducting career in 1995 and held the positions of Chief Conductor of the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra ( ), Chief Conductor of the Residentie Orchestra of The Hague ( ), Chief Conductor of the Royal Flemish Philharmonic Orchestra ( ), and Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and Radio Chamber Orchestras from Maestro van Zweden remains Honorary Chief Conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and Conductor Emeritus of the Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra. In 1997, Jaap van Zweden and his wife Aaltje established the Papageno Foundation, the objective being to support families with one or more children with autism. Over the years, that support has taken shape in a number of projects, such as Music Therapy and Music Makers, where professional music therapists and musicians, who receive additional training from Papageno, use music and make music with autistic children. Maestro and Aaltje van Zweden were guests of honor at the Autism Awareness Family Celebration at the Dallas Museum of Art in April 2011, where he led children in conducting a Dallas Symphony string ensemble, shared stories, and visited with families and caregivers of autistic youth. In recognition of his work and artistry, Jaap van Zweden has been honored by Queen Beatrix as a Knight of The Order of the Netherlands Lion, the highest honor bestowed on an artist in the Netherlands. The orchestra performs free Community Concerts Series concerts in neighborhoods throughout the City of Dallas.
