1 PASS IT ON... YOUR LINK TO THE LGFA Official Newsletter of Ladies Gaelic Football Corkery Leads Cork to Glory Cork may have begun the year in mixed form as they struggled through the League stages of their TESCO Homegrown NFL Division 1 campaign but the irrepressible Rebellettes found another gear when it mattered as they came from behind to defeat Dublin in Parnell Park. Earlier in the day Galway made up for disappointments in the previous two years by defeating Westmeath in the Division 2 Final whilst Armagh held out for victory over Waterford in the Division 3 final. A week earlier, in Tullamore, Roscommon were cheered all the way to Division 4 victory as they defeated Antrim in a lively encounter. Further details on Page 2 The LGFA have joined with the GAA/GPA and the Camogie Association to deliver the Lenovo Skills Hubs throughout the country this Summer. Pass it On.. 2 Page 2 Rebels Rule the Roost Again Cork again answered their critics in fine style as they produced a battling performance to overcome Dublin and claim the 2014 TESCO Homegrown National Football League Division 1 title. Much had been made of the loss of Juliet Murphy and Elaine Harte to retirement and the remaining uncertainty over the future of Nollaig Cleary. However, Eamonn Ryan s charges proved that there is no end in sight to the conveyor belt of talent coming through the rebel ranks as several of their young guns produced brilliant performances to defeat Dublin. Dublin entered the decider as favourites following an impressive campaign to date which saw them maintain an unbeaten record right through their league campaign. On their first ever appearance in the division 1 decider Dublin started quickly with two first half goals from Lindsay Peat but Orlagh Farmer scored one in return as Cork stayed in touch. Lyndsey Davey and Sinead Aherne both scored early second half points to leave Dublin 4 points ahead with momentum on their side but Cork responded by holding their rivals scoreless for the next 21 minutes. Valerie Mulcahy top scored for Cork with 5 vital points to keep the score board ticking over but the turning point of the match came from Deirdre O Reilly who was introduced to the action in the second half and chipped in with a fantastic point from distance that visibly rallied her team mates. Sinead Aherne reduced the gap to two points with a close in free but Dublin could not find the equalising score that they needed. The knock out blow was landed by Geraldine O Flynn who slotted over a pointed free to ensure the win for the defending champions with the last kick of the game. Briege Corkery accepted the TESCO Homegrown Division 1 cup for the champions who have made it two in a row and 8 Division 1 titles in total. After the final whistle had blown thoughts immediately began to turn to the Championship for which Cork will be the favourites to make it 3 in a row with a revitalised young squad. Dublin will also look forward with plenty of hope following a very encouraging League campaign that saw them lose only once. Provided Dublin can put this disappointment behind them they will take their place amongst the favourites for the TG4 Senior Championship and it will come as no surprise to anyone if both of these sides go head to head again on the last Sunday in September. 3 Third Time Lucky for Tribeswomen Page 3 Galway made up for the heart break that they suffered in 2012 and 2013 by finally winning the TESCO Homegrown National Football League having lost at the same stage to Mayo and Kerry in the previous two years. Galway were in scintillating form throughout their league campaign as they maintained a 100% record throughout but Westmeath proved a hard nut to crack as they made the Tribeswomen fight every inch of the way for their victory. Galway struggled to hit form throughout the first half despite having the benefit of a strong breeze but young gun Louise Ward was pulled down in the Westmeath square resulting in a penalty that was converted by Annette Clarke. Galway held a 1 goal lead at half time but in the second half they rediscovered their form and managed to put distance between the two teams. Another Clarke penalty goal and one from Barbara Hannon gave Galway the win that they so badly craved but the 3-10 to 0-09 scoreline was flattering for them as Westmeath were impressive throughout. Galway captain Sinead Burke accepted the trophy for the tribes who can now plan for a Division 1 campaign in Armagh claimed the TESCO Homegrown National Football League Division 3 Title following a tough encounter against a very determined Waterford team. Armagh boasted a 100% record from their league campaign and entered the match as favourites. A Lauren McConville goal was to prove decisive as it came just on the stroke of half time to give the Orchard County breathing space. However, Shauna Dunphy scored a goal of her own to give Armagh a scare but Waterford were left to ask what could have been as Michelle Ryan sent a penalty wide of the post, a blow that her team never recovered from. Armagh will be delighted with the victory after suffering a stunning defeat in the 2013 decider at the hands of Down but they will immediately be installed amongst the favourites for the 2015 Division 2 title. Tullamore was the venue for the TESCO Homegrown Division 4 Final where Roscommon were cheered on by a sizable crowd as they overcame Antrim. Roscommon were never in real danger of losing as they lead by 8 points at one stage in the first half but the gap was reduced to 4 by half time. Goals from Martina Freyne, Jenny Higgins and Siobhan Tully were enough for Roscommon to seal victory.
4 TESCO Homegrown Teams of the League 2014 The 2014 Teams of the League were honoured at a gala reception in Croke Park earlier this month. Players representing 28 counties from all 4 provinces were selected on the 4 Divisional teams. Players were nominated by managers from their division who could only choose players from the opposition teams. The players with the most nominations in each position were then named on the teams. 6 Ulster Claim 3rd MMI Interprovincial Tournament in a row. Ulster made it 3 in a row as they defeated Connacht in a fantastic final after a memorable tournament. There was drama throughout the day as a three way penalty shoot out required to decide who would progress to the final with Munster losing out but receiving the consolation of winning the shield competition against a very game Leinster side. Ulster Captain, Gemma Begley (Tyrone) receives the MMI Interprovincial cup from LGFA President Pat Quill. Cork star Angela Walsh was also named as the player of the tournament after producing superb displays all day.
