Veolia Water Outsourcing Waste Water and Energy Recovery Greg Turner Technical Director 23 rd April 2008

Veolia Environnement is the world leader in water services. Water and wastewater services management for local municipalities and industrial customers Design, build, own, operate and maintain waste and wastewater treatment systems Optimisation and upgrade of existing systems Water recycling Product recovery Added Value to Process Water source development 2

Food and Beverage Industry Drivers Cost Control and Economic Performance Complying with Regulations Improving Brand Image and Public Perception Hygiene, Safety and Quality Compliance - Innovative recycling of water/wastewater - Added value by-product identification - Process optimisation - Management of consents - EA relationship - Environmental Best Practice - Statuary utility provider relations - Anticipation of future regulatory change - Sustainability - Minimise Resource Utilisation - Environmentally Friendly image - ISO 1400 systems - Multi barrier recycle strategy 3

Services within the Food and Beverage Industry Water source development Sludge management & treatment Lighting, heating & cooling systems Purified water Wastewater management Boiler facility management Water re-use & recycling Waste to energy Power generation & maintenance Facilities management Industrial water Distribution system management By-product recovery Waste transportation Liquid & dry waste management 4

Anaerobic Digestion A natural treatment method for organic waste Biological decomposition of organic matter in an environment without air supply Production of gas as recoverable energy (biogas) Used for organic waste with a high carbon content (soluble COD) Low volume sludge production Undigested matter can be dried and used as biomass fuel Residual organic matter used for composting and landspreading 5

Anaerobic Digestion and Waste Water Anaerobic digestion processes are used in the treatment of biomass from waste effluent, sludge, and organic matter produced by industry. The process is a very compact and efficient proven process can reduce loads of COD by 70-90% produces significantly less volumes of sludge than aerobic processes reduces the risk of odour can be applied to concentrated liquid or semi-solid organic wastes with high dissolved COD loads (4.5 to 100g/l) including: Sludge from aerobic treatment of industrial effluent Organic waste from industrial activity Waste from catering service Sludge from municipal wastewater Municipal waste 6

Biogas: from Waste to Energy Sales to local Power Grid SELF - USAGE Agriculture waste co-products manure greases liquors organic waste Treated Water RESIDUALS soil fertilization 1 Non reusable portion: Flaring Food Processing Plant Effluent Activated sludge Sludge Digestion / co-digestion BIOGAS 60-75% méthane (CH 4 ) 2 Combustion Engine COGENERATION ELECTRICITY (yield: 30-40%) Carbon Credits (CO 2) boiler Usage in Plant Process Heating Cleaining of Plant Digestion (35 C) Treated Water Sludge Heating of Digestor 4 3 Other usages: - vehicle fuel - natural gas distribution circuit Thermal Energy (yield: 45-50%) Heated 90 C RE - CYCLING 7

Benefits go beyond treatment performance Anaerobic Digestion Process gives following main benefits High efficiency Production of a sludge with high fertilizer value (PKN) Renewable energy production: biodegradable organic matter is converted into biogas 70 80% methane (CH4), a source of green energy Cogeneration to thermal or electrical energy (non fossil fuels) Greenhouse gas reduction. CH4 recovery provides carbon credits allocations if sites consumption > 20 MW/yr 8

Benefits of Anaerobic Digestion Cost savings in line with increased energy prices Attracts Government Incentive Programmes (renewable energy) Carbon Credits Reduction of Industrial Environmental Impact Demonstrates Sustainable Development Policy A Solution to Local Limitations on Organic Waste Disposal Wastewater + Organic Waste Non Fossil Energy Biogas offers a combination of the Veolia Group Environmental Services of Water + Energy + Waste. 9

Case Studies - Brewing and Distilling Brewing Company, UK The Client One of the world s leading brewing groups with a strong international market position. At this site, well known brands are brewed and packaged. Our solutions The turnkey project was commissioned in October 2007.Veolia will also operate the WWTP on behalf of the brewery. The plant will discharge to river. Client s needs A solution was required to reduce the high cost of discharging untreated wastewater to sewer and minimise the impact to the local environment. It was the clients requirement to treat site wastewater and discharge to river to achieve both of these aims. The results and benefits Veolia proposed a turnkey solution based on high rate, small footprint anaerobic/aerobic processes, including recovery of by-products such as methane. 11

Technology and Solution Full turnkey design and build solution Divert Odour Control Gas Buffer List of technologies by steps of treatment Primary treatment - 1mm screen Secondary treatment - Anaerobic + Aerobic Tertiary treatment - DAF + Disc Filter Other treatments - Biogas recovery and re-use Services - Operation and maintenance Screen Balance Recirc.Tank Anaerobic Aerobic Disc Filter Gas Burner Main technical Data - 42m 3 /hr- 4tons COD/d - Biogas 60m 3 /hr Consent - BOD 20mg/l - SS 25mg/l - NH 4 10mg/l Sludge Tank Belt Press DAF 12
