The new, multi-disciplined MSc Sports Technology is the result of an exciting and innovative collaboration between the University s Exercise and Sport Science department and the School of Engineering.

3 MSc in Mechanical Engineering One year full-time, two years part-time On this course, you will learn advanced mechanical sciences through a mixture of theory, simulation and practice. This includes building complex models of dynamic, static and thermofluid systems using the latest industry standard software tools, such as ADAMS and ANSYS. You will use finite element analysis to study how complex heat, stress and fluid flow problems can be evaluated in practice. Using fatigue analysis, you will investigate failure mechanisms in real world systems and components. A unit combining multibody and CFD tools with the underlying theory gives you the opportunity to study multi-body dynamic systems and turbulent fluid dynamic motion. In product design, you will learn how to carry advanced engineering theories through the design process resulting in a real world product. A unit on measurement systems gives you the necessary techniques to gather data for checking your computer analysis and design work. A management unit gives you the opportunity for personal development in terms of your professional skills and you will learn from industrial case studies. All students carry out a Masters project in an appropriate area of personal interest. This is one third of the overall course and offers you the possibility to specialise in your chosen area. 4 MSc in Automotive Engineering One year full-time, two years part-time Future trends in automotive engineering anticipate that vehicle powertrains and control systems will become central to vehicle technology, as these systems encourage sustainable, affordable and environmentally-friendly vehicles. This course delivers the key technologies in these areas, as well as focusing on the underlying engineering for vehicle design. Working with specialists in vehicle controls and advanced powertrains, you will study modern vehicle powertrains including alternatively fuelled engines, hybrid vehicles, CVT drivelines and regenerative braking. You will examine future directions such as electric vehicles and fuel cell technology. Throughout the unit, you will study the underlying technology in subject areas such as electric power management and advanced battery technology. You will learn about advanced vehicle control systems for improving comfort, safety and performance. Key actuators, sensors and controllers will be reviewed and assessed. Systems such as adaptive cruise control or collision avoidance are used as case studies for the key mechatronics science. You will also study vehicle dynamic control using active steering/suspension/driveline/braking. You will gain insight into the supporting mechanical science behind automotive systems through the study of simulation packages for stress, dynamic, aerodynamic and fatigue analysis. A final year project is one third of the whole MSc and allows you to specialise in your chosen area of study. You will also have the opportunity to take part in the formula student racing car project. 5 MSc in Sports Technology One year full-time, two years part-time Sports equipment technology, whether for elite sports activity or everyday exercise and leisure, is an exciting and rapidly developing field and a major industry in itself. A successful product or piece of sport equipment requires not only first class engineering and product design skills, but also a thorough knowledge of the human musculoskeletal system function and the biomechanics of human movement. This course combines both, and delivers on the important interdisciplinary element of sports engineering and technology. This Sports Technology Masters encompasses systems for analysing human movement and approaches to the design of sporting products. You will learn how advanced computer packages for mechanical analysis and design can be used to measure many things, from the stress analysis of a tennis racket or a human limb to dynamic simulations of a throwing arm or a racing cycle, or the fluid flow simulation of a swimmer or a bobsleigh. Two specialist units from sports science will give you insight into the biomechanical aspects of this technology degree. One examines the methods for measuring human movement and will develop your understanding of the biomechanical properties of the musculoskeletal system, showing how the system can be simulated using computer software. You will learn how these models can be validated through highly specialised techniques for measuring human movement. The other focuses on performance and injury, and examines how training can be optimised through a clear understanding of the biomechanics of the body. It also delivers a clear understanding of the mechanisms of injury and shows how injury can be avoided using specialist methods. You will learn about the creative design process for sports products and goods, and the importance of the link between analysing the body and creating good quality concepts for sports product design. A measurement systems unit will give you in-depth approaches to analyse athletes or sporting products to measure performance. You will take a final year project in your chosen area of interest allowing you to study particular theories and techniques of interest in depth. 6 Career opportunities An MSc qualification gives you the edge over other graduates in the job market and can lead to higher level employment and opportunities to apply your advanced skills. Industry is keen to employ postgraduates who can learn independently and apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to real world problems. The job market in engineering and technology fields is buoyant with many sectors maintaining good economic performance despite changes in the global economy. Careers in modern engineering require advanced mechanical skills and as a Mechanical Engineering postgraduate, you can apply your computational analysis skills through a range of rail, aerospace, process and biomedical industries. Work could include thermodynamic analysis of power plant components, stress analysis of a high pressure gas line or fatigue analysis of a train suspension component. As an Automotive Engineering postgraduate, you can enter automotive engineering jobs with a mix of mechanical and electronic skills. You can apply your skills to the latest electric and hybrid vehicle powertrains, implement the latest mechatronic technology to design an active suspension or use computer analysis packages for refining vehicle components. Sports Technology postgraduates will possess the design, engineering, sports technology, human movement biomechanics and scientific and measurement skills to work in a range of sports industries. This could include applying measurement, testing and analysis skills to high performance sports products or equipment; or designing, developing and refining sports or other related products in the wider field of sports medicine, physical activity and exercise, healthcare or engineering. You will also be well placed to pursue further study such as a PhD or an Engineering Doctorate. Facilities and location We are investing more than 7 million in brand new buildings for engineering and biomedical science at our central Manchester campus. A new 4 million engineering block offers state-of-the-art facilities for research and teaching whilst a new 3m building will house our leading institute for biomedical research into movement and health including exercise science and bioengineering facilities. Our location at the city centre end of Oxford Road in central Manchester is extremely convenient, with frequent bus services directly outside and a local railway station nearby. The main Piccadilly railway station, with national rail and local tram services, is a fifteen minute walk away. Programme structure All MSc awards require 180 credits. Contact is divided between formal contact time (including lectures, practicals and tutorials) and individual student-centred learning. You will study 120 credits of taught units (typically 20 credits per unit) and complete a 60 credit Masters project. Interim Awards A Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) can be awarded to students who successfully complete a total of 120 credits of the course (all of the taught units). A Postgraduate Certificate (PG Cert) in Advanced Engineering and Technology can be awarded to students who successfully complete a total of 60 credits (of taught units). Students can continue and obtain 180 credits for the MSc. Modes of study Full time September start 12 months duration January start 18 months duration (with summer break) Part time September and January start 2 years duration Teaching and Assessment Teaching and learning is generally conducted through lectures, tutorials and laboratory activities and independent learning. Students are encouraged to make positive contributions to tutorial sessions, group discussions, case studies and team exercises throughout. You will be assessed through a combination of written reports, oral presentations, practical assignments and written examinations. Entry requirements Entry will usually require a second class degree in engineering or science (or the equivalent for EU and international students) or an equivalent professional qualification e.g. Graduateship (or equivalent) of an appropriate professional body or an unclassified degree in engineering or science with relevant professional experience. Other equivalent qualifications will be assessed on merit. International students will also need to meet the English language requirements: IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 575 (TOEFL CBT 233, TOEFL IBT 90).
