3 1: About this document 1 About this document 1.1 Scope This configuration guide explains how to set up and configure a primary link using the GSM (3G) modem on a GW2040 Series router. This document covers firmware version 9.09.xx and firmware version xx. 1.2 Readership This document is for engineers who have previous experience configuring and managing GW Series routers. 1.3 More information Assigned interface number Throughout this guide we have used ppp-1 as the assigned interface number. You can configure any PPP interface number for connections. For example, ppp-2 could be substituted for each ppp-1 task covered in this document. 1.4 Terminology Abbreviation APN EDGE GPRS GSM HSDPA UMTS Description Access Point Name Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution, sometimes referred to as Enhanced GPRS (EGPRS) General Packet Radio Service Global System for Mobile communications High-Speed Downlink Packet Access Universal Mobile Telecommunications System 1.5 Prerequisites Inserting the SIM card 1. Ensure the unit is powered off. 2. Hold the SIM card with the chip side facing down and the cut corner top left. 3. Gently push the SIM card into SIM slot 1 until it clicks in. 4. To remove the SIM card, gently push the SIM card. The card will click out. WARNING The SIM card MUST be inserted into the router before the unit is powered on. Do not insert or remove the SIM card after the unit has been powered on. Issue: 10.2 Page 3 of 38

4 1: About this document Internet Service Provider details Before you configure the GSM (3G) modem, check with your Internet Service Provider for the following information: Number PIN PUK, and Access Point Name Username and password Issue: 10.2 Page 4 of 38

5 2: Introduction 2 Introduction 2.1 3G overview 3G is the third generation of mobile phone standards and technology. It is based on the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) family of standards under the International Mobile Telecommunications programme, IMT G technologies enable network operators to offer users a wider range of more advanced services while achieving greater network capacity through improved spectral efficiency. Services include wide-area wireless voice telephony, video calls, and broadband wireless data, all in a mobile environment. The GW2040 Series router contains a GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) 3G wireless modem. The modem in connection with a SIM card establishes a WAN connection to the Internet. The GW2040 Series router supports a maximum download speed of 7.2 Mbps and a maximum upload speed of 384 kbps. 2.2 Typical uses of the GSM (3G) modem You can use the GSM (3G) modem on the GW2040 Series in two ways. You can create a primary WAN link over the GSM (3G) modem. Figure 1: A primary WAN link over the 3G modem You can use the GSM (3G) modem as a backup WAN link. If the primary interface link fails, the GW2040 Series router uses its GSM (3G) modem to automatically route traffic across the Internet via its alternative interface. This set up is not covered in this document. For further information contact Virtual Access. Issue: 10.2 Page 5 of 38

6 2: Introduction Figure 2: A primary link using the 3G modem on the GW2040 series router 2.3 Types of data bearers that the GSM (3G) modem supports Data bearers are frame protocols that transport data streams GPRS GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) uses packet-switched technology to transmit small bursts of data. The maximum data rate available to the 3G modem depends on provisioning by the network operator HSDPA HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) uses circuit-switched technology to transmit data at speeds of up to 7.2Mbps HSUPA HSUPA (High-Speed Uplink Packet Access) is a 3G mobile telephony protocol with up link speeds of 5.76Mbps UMTS UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) is a 3rd generation technology providing higher transfer rates EDGE Edge uses the same frequencies as GPRS but offers better speeds. It is used when the signal strength for 3G is not sufficient. Setting up the GSM (3G) modem for a primary WAN link To configure the GW2040 Series to use the GSM (3G) modem interface, follow the steps in sections 2.5 to You do not have to save each configuration until you have updated all your settings. When you have completed all your configuration changes, you must save the configuration as described in section Save the configuration. Issue: 10.2 Page 6 of 38
