1 Novatel U530 & U630 O2 Branded Datacards Installation instructions for: O2 version of Mobilink Software: Version This is the latest version of software has been specifically developed to optimise the performance with an O2 SIM and is recommended users upgrade to it to provide optimum experience. Follow the below instructions to install or upgrade the Mobilink software: Prior to installing the O2 branded Mobilink software remove any previous versions of the Mobilink software. If installed on the laptop remove the O2 Connection Manager software. After un-installing the software perform a reboot on the laptop. 1. Mobilink Software Installation Ensure the Novatel U530 or U630 card is not inserted in the laptop. Download Mobilink software version and the associated config.bin file. Ensure the config.bin file and Mobilink software are in the same location before loading the software onto the laptop. The config.bin file contains data for five default profiles. The laptop should be restarted after the software is installed. After the reboot the datacard should be inserted into the laptop this will cause the required drivers to be installed. It should now be possible to initiate data calls via the Mobilink Graphical User Interface (GUI) refer to section 2 for further information on how to configure profiles. It should be noted that if users configure a dial up networking profile to initiate data calls, as described in section 5, then revert to using the Mobilink GUI to establish data sessions the AT command (e.g. AT+CGDCONT=1, IP, APN Name ) which defines which APN should be used should be removed. For further information refer to section 5.1 bullet point b. If the AT command is not removed users may not connect to the required APN when using the Mobilink GUI they may instead establish a data session to the APN defined by the AT command. If during the installation an error message is seen that indicates that an mf.inf file is required then this operating system file should be loaded onto the laptop. A Novatel technical note details of what to do if an error message is seen and can be downloaded from the following URL: Version of the Mobilink software includes a key piece of functionality - power is applied to U530, or U630 datacards, as soon as they are inserted into the laptop. NDIS drivers no longer have to be loaded to provide this capability. 1.1 Error 619 Seen When Initiating a Data Call with the Mobilink Software If the latest Mobilink software and datacard drivers install but problems are experienced when initiating a data call with the Mobilink software (i.e. an error 619 is seen) do the following: 1

2 Ensure the U530 or U630 datacard is inserted in the laptop. Go to dial up Network Connections (i.e. Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections) and delete the profile called 3G Connection. Try and initiate a data call via the Mobilink software. It should now work and the 3G Connection profile will once more be visible. Other possible causes of an error 619 are as follows: Access Point Name (APN) not entered correctly (i.e. wrong characters used for instance) or not entered at all. Wrong user name and/or password being used. The SIM being used is not associated with the required APN. 2. Initiating a Data Connection via the Mobilink Software 2.1 O2 Default Profiles Visible If the config.bin file was located in the same directory as the Mobilink software during installation, refer to section 1, five profiles will have been created during installation: O2 Mobile Web (Template): this profile should be selected if O2 s Mobile Web service is to be used. O2 Mobile Web VPN: this profile should be selected if O2 s Mobile Web VPN service is to be used. O2.ie Business: this profile should be selected if O2 Ireland s Business service is to be used. O2.ie Consumer: this profile should be selected if O2 Ireland s Consumer service is to be used. O2.ie Consumer (Template): this profile should be selected if O2 Ireland s Consumer service is to be used. It is possible to create a new data connection profile as follows: The Menu option on the Mobilink software should be selected (e.g. top left icon) - refer to Figure 1. 2

3 Figure 1 Mobilink Menu Icon 1) The profile manager should be selected. 2) Select New. 3) A profile name should be entered: O2 Mobile Web not Optimised for instance. 4) The APN should be entered: mobile.o2.co.uk for instance. 5) Select Next. 6) Enter the user name and password for the connection. For O2 s Mobile Web not Optimised service the following user name and password would be used: a. User name: bypass b. Password: password 7) Select Finish. 8) Select OK. 9) The profile created can now be selected from the pull down menu in the top centre of the Mobilink software refer to Figure 2. Figure 2: Mobilink Connection Selection via Pull Down Menu 2.2 O2 Default Profiles Not Visible If the config.bin file was not placed in the same location as the Mobilink software during installation, refer to section 1, only one profile will be created during installation UMTS Connection. This connection cannot be used to initiate a data call. In this instance the following course of action is strongly recommended: The config.bin file should be copied to the same location as the Mobilink installation software. The Mobilink software should be removed from the laptop and re-installed (i.e. the config.bin file should be located in the same directory as the Mobilink software during the installation). 3

4 2.2.1 Creating a Profile if Config.bin was not Present During the Mobilink Installation As detailed in section 2.2 it is strongly recommended that the Mobilink software be installed in conjunction with the config.bin file. However, if the config.bin file is not used during the Mobilink software installation it is possible to create a new data connection profile as follows: 1) The Menu option on the Mobilink software should be selected (e.g. top left icon) - refer to Figure 1. 2) The profile manager should be selected. 3) Select New. 4) A profile name should be entered: O2 Mobile Web for instance. 5) The APN should be entered: mobile.o2.co.uk for instance. 6) Select Next. 7) Enter the user name and password for the connection. For O2 s Mobile Web service use the following user name and password information: a. User name: faster b. Password: password 8) Select the Advanced tab. 9) Select the TCP/IP tab. 10) Select the Advanced Network option. 11) Ensure the Use Proxy Server Option is selected and that the Proxy Server is configured to be with a port of 1 refer to Figure 3. It is very important that a proxy server of is configured. If this entry is not created any proxy server settings configured via Internet Explorer will be lost each time the Mobilink software is used to initiate a data call. 12) Select OK. 13) Select OK. 14) Select Finish. 4

5 Figure 3: Profile Proxy Server Setting 2.3 Selecting the Authentication Type The Mobilink software allows the following authentication types to be selected: Automatic: this is the default setting and CHAP will be used in this instance. 1) PAP. 2) CHAP. The authentication type can be changed as follows: 3) The Menu option on the Mobilink software should be selected (e.g. top left icon) - refer to Figure 1. 4) The profile manager should be selected. 5) The profile that is of interest should be highlighted. 6) Select Edit. 7) On the General tab one of the pull down boxes is, Authentication Type. 8) The required authentication type should be selected. 9) Select OK. 10) Select OK. Customers who have procured O2 s bearer service (e.g. a private APN) and use radius authentication in conjunction with a third party database (e.g. ACE server/securid or 5

6 Windows Active directory for instance) should note that they will need to select PAP authentication. 2.4 Setting whether the GPRS or UMTS Bearer will be Utilised The Mobilink software allows the user to set that a particular data bearer should be selected: Automatic: this is the setting that will be most appropriate to the majority of customers. In this instance the U530 or U630 datacards try to use the 3G bearer but if this bearer is not available use the GPRS bearer. GPRS only: the GPRS bearer will only be used. UMTS only: the 3G bearer will only be used. If users are in a location that is on the edge of 3G coverage it is often useful to force the datacard to use 3G only to see if the 3G bearer can be used. The bearer type can be changed as follows: 1) The Menu option on the Mobilink software should be selected (e.g. top left icon) - refer to Figure 1. 2) The Configuration option should be selected. 3) The Mobile tab should be selected. 4) The bearer that should be used can be selected via the pull down box in the Advanced section of the screen (refer to Figure 4): a. GPRS Only. b. Automatic. c. UMTS Only. 5) Select OK. 3. ALTERNATIVE METHOD FOR INITIATING A DATA CALL Data calls can be initiated via the Mobilink Graphical User Interface (GUI) or a Dial Up Networking (DUN) profile can be used. If a DUN profile is used then the Mobilink software is only used to configure how the card will operate e.g. GPRS Only, UMTS Only or the preferred setting of Automatic. 3.1 Configure How the Card will Operate The Mobilink software should be used to configure how the card will operate e.g. GPRS Only, UMTS Only or the preferred setting of Automatic (Select Menu -> Configuration -> Mobile -> Select mode of working required via the pull down box ). The majority of customers will wish to use Automatic (refer to section 2.4 for further information). a. Create a Dial up Networking Profile A new dial up networking profile should be created in the standard manner (e.g. Start - >Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Create a New Connection): o The Novotel card should be selected as the modem to be used. o A telephone number of *99# should be used. o User name and password information should be entered. If O2 s Mobile Web service is to be used a user name of faster and a password of password should be used. o If people need to connect to network drives the, Client for Microsoft Networks, option should be selected: The profile that has just been created for use with the Novotel 3G card should be highlighted. Right click and select properties. Select the Networking tab. Confirm that, Client for Microsoft Networks, is ticked. 6

Configuring the U530 or U630 to use the Required APN The U530 modem or U630 modem should be configured to use the required Access Point Name (APN): 1) Select Start -> Control Panel -> Phone and Modem Options. 2) Select the Modems Tab. 3) Highlight the Novotel Wireless UMTS Modem Primary Port and select properties. 4) Select the Advanced tab and enter the following string in the Extra initialisation commands field - the following string assumes O2's Mobile Web service is going to be used: a. AT+CGDCONT=1, IP, MOBILE.O2.CO.UK (If a different APN is to be used then the required APN details should be entered instead of MOBILE.O2.CO.UK) 5) Select OK. 6) Select OK. c. Process for Initiating a Data Call 1) Insert the Novotel datacard into the laptop. 2) Observe the state of the LED on the card: a. If the LED is solid red or flashing red led then the card is not yet ready to be used: i. In this instance ensure that there is not a PIN on the SIM. ii. If there is no PIN on the SIM and the SIM is definitely associated with a GPRS/3G APN then remove the card and re-insert it into the laptop. b. If a flashing green LED is seen then the card is attached to the GPRS bearer and can be used to initiate a data call. c. If a flashing blue LED is seen then the card is attached to the 3G bearer and can be used to initiate a data call. 3) Providing the LED is flashing green or blue the target dial up networking profile can be selected to initiate the data call. The data session should be established in less than 5 seconds. The LED will no longer flash and will remain solid for as long as a data session is in place. 3.2 Additional Information If the laptop is connected to another bearer (e.g. LAN, wireless LAN, broadband, PSTN etc) users should ensure that the Novotel datacard does not have a data session established. The datacard can be left in the laptop but a flashing blue or green LED should be seen this indicates that a data call is not in progress. If a data session is left in place when a fixed bearer is connected, such as a LAN connection for instance, problems can be encountered with some laptops. Essentially, data traffic gets routed to the card rather than the LAN connection. How the card will operate is set via the Mobilink software e.g. GPRS Only, UMTS Only or the preferred setting of Automatic. Once automatic has been selected and saved there should be no further requirement to open the Mobilink GUI software. It should be noted that a PIN cannot be used on the SIM if the dial up networking way of working is to be used. 7

8 Figure 4: Data Bearer Selection It should be noted that if a U530 or U630 datacard is inserted into a laptop and the bearer type is set to a particular bearer (i.e. UMTS Only for instance) then the datacard will use this setting if it is inserted into a different laptop. 8
