1 1 STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION INC. OF MONTCLAIR STATE UNIVERSITY Minutes September 25, 2013 Student Center Room 411 I. CALL TO ORDER Meeting is called to order at 3:09 P.M II. ROLL CALL Lina does roll call. III. ACCEPTANCE OF MINUTES Amendments have been adopted. Minutes have been accepted. IV. ADMINISTRATIVE REPORTS V. OFFICER REPORTS Kristen: retreat will be fifth and sixth of October, sign up sheet will be downstairs in front of my door. Retreat is mandatory. Frank: I have a class that day, is that okay? Kristen: Yes, that is legitimate. I am going to pass up the table hours sign up sheet. There will be tables around campus, please sign up for one that you can make. This counts as your office hours for that week. If you have first table meeting, come pick up supplies downstairs. I also gave you all nametags, when you motion something, please raise your nametag so Luca can know your name. Frank: Can we have flyers from other orgs on tables? Kristen: Yes, we can discuss that. George: Sorry I was late guys, if you were unaware this morning there was a ceremony for the ground braking center for environmental life sciences. It was a great event. VI. CABINET REPORTS Janel: Hey everyone, I am director of yearbook, and we are trying to start meetings every Friday at the SGA conference room, if you are into design or photography, just let me know. We have a lot of things to cover, so if you guys could join it would be appreciated Dan: Hello, my name is Dan I am director of recreation, the recreation board is having their first event, bingo. If you bring cans of foods you can receive extra boards to play. It s free, bring your friends, thanks! Nicole: Hey guys, I am secretary of academic affairs. I am having an event the 15 of October. From 1-3 in student center ballroom B. Ferd: Hello folks, I need some legislators for G and A. I am looking for Friday to start the meetings, but we can discuss a meeting time later on. Kristen: any committee reports? Did we all elect chairs? We can finalize the times. If you had not already done so please elect chairs and secretaries.

2 2 VII. PROGRAM Swear In New Legislators Lenny Anthony Yuriany Juan Guillermo Rajhon Legislators are sworn in PPT Nominations: Ashley: I am running unopposed. I have been shadowing Kristen since the summer, I am excited to start working with organizations to see how we can benefit campus. Kristen: All those in favor please raise your hands. Ashley becomes resident pro tempore. Players: thanks for all who came out to MILF. We had 300 people come which was great. Passes out invitations for future event. Thanks guys. Office of extended learning: Introduces summer and winter sessions. About 70% of undergrads take summer or winter classes. Explains the advantages of taking a summer or winter class. Lightens load. Passed summer session had 6800 students. There are 9 summer sessions. We also offer study abroad, co-ops and internships. Summer sessions will be beginning with registration in January. Winter sessions has also been recently reinstilled. Winter session is held during winter break. Beginning December 20 th. Earn up to 4 credits in 4 weeks during winter session. Winter registration opens Monday November 4 th. Website has more info on info cards. We would also like your input, so we put together a brief survey for you guys. Passes out surveys. Any questions? 3 3 Bill #F Justice Bill Author s Report: I met with Joe, we need a judicial branch to fulfill checks and balances of SGA. They will be working closely with us to make sure no issues arise. Organization Report: Hi guys, I studied law 2 years in High School. I plan on becoming corporate lawyer, I love law. I have hopes of enhancing student life Ashley: Motion to go into committee as a whole. Motion is seconded. Questions for Author in Committee: Jack: What are you goals? Joe: I just want to make sure that what happens via SGA is accepted by students and that they are getting what they deserve. Chris: How much experience would you say you have in general? Joe: I was in SGA in high school, and have that background in law. Vincent: How comfortable are you with MSU statutes? Joe: I read them when I got them Frank: If a questionable bill comes across your desk, how would you handle that? Joe: I would definitely go to the organization and ask what that is about, or go to others who are more experienced. Frank Why would you say SGA exists? Joe: to help regulate student life at Montclair. I am also here for the students. Rajhon: Motion to go into committee as a whole. Vincent: Object. Was not discussed in student affairs Kristen: Vote to go into committee as a whole. Vote passes. Ferd: You guys are required to vote. Please vote for every motion. Debate and Discussion in Committee: Ferd: I have met with Joe, and he has expressed the importance of G and A committee Monika: I just wanted to say that Joe works with me in CSI, and he has great work ethic and he is a great learner Vincent: Tell me what the article 1 in the constitution says. Kristen: Please refrain from asking questions in debate and discussion. Do you want to rephrase that? Vincent: Point of Information, what is the article 1 say in the statutes? Lenny: I think Joe would do a great job Fatima: I think there is a learning curve in any position of SGA. It s learning by trial and error. Every SGA member will learn. Do not hold that against them. Every year we learn something new. Take this as that opportunity. Kristen: Counted vote in committee Positive recommendation George: I met with Joe a number of times. He as started reading the statutes. I would give him a bit more time to memorize the statutes. Bill #F Chief Justice appointment Author s Report:

4 4 George: I d like to make a friendly amendment to change his to her. Sabah was a justice last year. She understands purpose of judicial branch, and continues to work closely with me and other organizations. She is more than qualified. Organization Report: Hello to all new legislators. I was a justice last year, and if you were with us last year you would remember the mis-communication that happened. I am trying my best to not let that happen this year. Motion is seconded Questions for the Organization In Committee: Vincent: How would you try to make a plan to cause less problems between branches Sabah: biggest issue was mis-communication. Justice branch has been inactive for a couple years. We tried to get it back on its feet. is the best way to contact us. Debate and Discussion In committee: Ashley: Sabah has seen the good bad and the ugly. She knows that we are all here to work with each other. I think she will do a great job Frank: Since I started in SGA, Sabah has been a great resource. She has helped me a lot in writing bills, and with dealing through issues Lenny: She has stepped up a lot since last year. Please inform your organization that the org needs to attend the meetings Ashley: We changed con review time. Thursdays 5:30 Ferd: Id like to apologize to legislator for calling decorum earlier. I need some folks for G and A Rajhon: Hi guys, I am treasurer for SLAM, and we have our concert coming up net Friday October 4 th. Time flies is coming. For this event, we will need a lot of help. If you would like to help come talk to me. Lina: If you guys have been in SGA office, most of you guys have a mailbox. It s a way to communicate with your organization. Time cards also go in there. I will check biweekly for your 1 hour office hour. Clock in before your table hours. Make sure you are going to your committees. Let me know who the chairs and secretaries are. Secretaries will learn that you all have binders with the minutes sheet. Make a copy, and leave one in my mailbox, and one in Betty s mailbox. Kristen: absences form committees and hours will count as SGA absences. Jenel: What are table hours? Kristen: I will go into detail

7 7 Monika: Jen is having Montclair s Got Talent at 8:00 P.M on the 30 th in commuter lounge. Kristen: I want to emphasize the retreat. Please sign up. Bring sneakers, and comfortable clothes. It s next weekend. It is a surprise location. Come the entire time, or not at all. Table hours. There is a reserved table for you guys, come to SGA office for supplies, sit at the table to inform students on campus events. I am going to pass the sheet around again, please sign up for the 1 st and the 3 rd, and the following weeks. 2 people per table. Lina: If you are crafty and creative, come see me for table ideas. Remember you are representing SGA. If you do not know something, direct them. Do not give false information. Kristen: Any returning SGA members see that it s just new members for a day, try to sign up with them to help them Monika: Do you have to be at the shift the whole time? Kristen: make sure at least one person is at the table at all times. Also, October 1 st marks the last day for grace period. No more writing bills on the floor Ferd: Bills can be written on floor, but should not be considered Kristen: All bills should be submitted to me by 4:00 P.M on Monday, no expectations. Mentions 28 days in advance, and 14 days in advance for matching funds. Also mentions big and little. Come to me when you find a little / big etc. you are not restricted to one. But it is not required. Just let me know, do not tell the person, let me know Frank: Further explains what 28 days in advance means for a bill. Ashley: SGA office is open for you guys to sit in at any time. You can come there whenever you want, I m always there. It helps to learn more. And thank you for voting for me. Also one of my duties is to check when all events are, and set a date and gather a group to go to the event. Kristen: Exciting news. We are starting a little challenge. We have something we are working for. President Cole and Dr. Pennington are on board. We are trying to raise enough money for a massive statue of a brass hawk. We need to raise a lot of money for this. So we are going to be coming up with different ideas on fundraising. If you have any ideas just let me know, and spread the word when it happens. Jack: where do you wan to put it Kristen: Dr. Cole will decide, probably in the front of the campus. Lina: Come see me now if you have any ideas on this. XI.
