Military kcn.enquiries@sceschools.org ACTIVITIES DAYS 2016 Dear Parent/Guardian This year the Activities Days will take place on Monday 18 th and Tuesday 19 th July. Your son / daughter is able to choose a different option for each day. The exceptions are Cricket, Gliding and Upcycling where students will do the same activity on both Monday and Tuesday. On the next page is an outline of which activities are available on which days as well as an outline description of what each activity involves. Please read through the descriptions of the activities and be aware that a level of risk is involved in some of the activities which will take place. All precautions have been taken for this. Packed lunches will be required for all activities. However if your child is currently on the school dinner system a packed lunch will be provided by the canteen. Once you have selected your choices complete the tear off slip at the back of the booklet and return to school as quickly as possible. Make sure you get your reply in quickly so as not to be disappointed as there are limits to some activities. All payments and reply slips need to be returned to the bursary by Wednesday 15 th June. 3 PAID FOR ACTIVITIES HORSE RIDING PRICE: 15 euros WHERE: Paderborn Equestrian Centre WHEN: Monday 18 th OR Tuesday 19 th MAXIMUM NUMBER: 16 EXTRA INFORMATION: You will spend the day working with the horses with supervised instructors. You will groom the horses and muck out the stables. Instructors will give you the training to ride the horses and will take you out for a ride / hack. Clothing must be appropriate for horse riding. During this day you will need to wear a helmet whilst riding and be aware of the possible risks of being bitten or kicked by a horse. ROCK CLIMBING PRICE: 18 euros WHERE: Kletterhalle XI, Paderborn WHEN: Tuesday 19 th Due to costs this activity needs at least 15 people to make it run. EXTRA INFORMATION: You will spend the day being trained by specialist instructors to climb the indoor wall at the Kletterhalle XI. Also clothing must be appropriate for rock climbing. Make sure there are no untied laces, loose hair, rings and jewellery. You also need to wear clean sports shoes. During the day you will need to follow all instructions given by your instructors and ensure all harnesses and helmets are securely attached. 4 GLIDING PRICE: 38 Euros WHERE: Segelflugschule Oelinghausen WHEN: Monday 18 th AND Tuesday 19 th MAXIMUM NUMBER: 15- Must be over 14 years of age. EXTRA INFORMATION: This activity is spread over 2 days in case of poor weather. You will learn the basic principles of flight and take the controls of a Glider flying over the Teutoburger Wald. It does require you to learn some basics before going to the airfield and will involve training in, and a chance to assist the running of the Landing point, lessons and practise in the Flying simulator before you fly with your instructor for around 20 minutes. Gliding can be quite physical particularly when the glider launches. You will be required to wear trainers, full sleeve protection and bring sunglasses and a hat, it gets very warm in the Glider cockpit! Bear in mind that you could be on an open Airfield for up to 6 hours. Waterproofs, Water and some spending money is also suggested. For further information about what will be on offer visit their website HIGH ROPES PRICE: 22 euros WHERE: Teuto-Kletterpark Detmold WHEN: Monday 18 th July Due to costs this activity needs at least 15 people to make it run. EXTRA INFORMATION: You will spend the day being trained by specialist instructors to use the high ropes courses Clothing must be appropriate for rock climbing. Make sure there are no untied laces, loose hair, rings and jewellery. They also need to wear clean sports shoes. During the day you will need to follow all instructions given by your instructors and ensure all harnesses and helmets are securely attached. At the end you will also visit Hermans Denkmal which is right by the Kletterpark.

6 MUNSTER ZOO PRICE: 10 euros WHERE: Munster Zoo WHEN: Monday 18 th July OR Tuesday 19th EXTRA INFORMATION: Munster Zoo offers a huge variety of animals ranging from armadillos to zebras and tigers to pythons. You will have the opportunity to feed elephants and penguins, observe gorillas in the monkey house and watch sea lions play and perform. A great day out!

7 FREE ACTIVITIES CRICKET PRICE: No Cost WHERE: School based, using the gyms, cage or cricket pitch WHEN: Monday 18 th AND Tuesday 19 th MAXIMUM NUMBER: 22 EXTRA INFORMATION: Group will be sorted into teams that will be playing against each other in a series of cricket based activities and games. This will include a T20 match. Although some basic skills will be covered, the activity is aimed at providing cricket for existing or experienced cricketers, or, at the very least, someone really interested in cricket. If you do this activity you need to commit to it and be fully involved for both days. You cannot opt in and out as you feel. Quite a few who have done this activity in the past have repeated it the following year (or years!). Things covered will include basic batting, bowling and fielding skills, Umpiring and scoring. HAIR TASTER PRICE: No Cost WHERE: Kings School Hair Academy WHEN: Tuesday 19 th MAXIMUM NUMBER: 14 EXTRA INFORMATION: A great chance to spend a day in a working Hair academy / salon. You will be given a professional introduction into all aspects of working with hair. The day will include shampooing, learning different techniques of blow drying, setting hair, using rollers and doing different platting techniques. This is the only time in the year when Key Stage 3 get to access the Hair Academy and this will give you an excellent taster day into what it is like to work in a hair salon. Unfortunately you will not be able to cut or colour hair during this day.

8 NAIL AND MAKE UP DESIGN PRICE: No Cost WHERE: Kings School Hair Academy WHEN: Monday 18th MAXIMUM NUMBER: 12 EXTRA INFORMATION: A great day to work as part of a real beauty salon. You will research recent designs and fashions in beauty and nail art at the KVH, and choose a style to re-create. You will then work on a carousel learning a range of techniques involved in nail art and beauty techniques. At the end of the day you will put all of your new skills together to re-create the images you saw in the morning. This is the only time in the year when Key Stage 3 get to access the Hair Academy and this will give you an excellent taster day into what it is like to work in a beauty salon. PARK BAD PRICE: Free WHERE: Park Bad, Gutersloh WHEN: Monday 18 th July OR Tuesday 19th MAXIMUM NUMBER: None EXTRA INFORMATION: The Park Bad is a great place to relax and enjoy the day. There is a very large paddling pool to cool off in, along with football posts, beach volleyball, trampolines and a climbing area. Alternatively you may just want to sit on a sun lounger and soak up the sun. There is also a café where you can buy food and drinks.

9 UPCYCLING PRICE: Free WHERE: Room 67 WHEN: Monday 18 th AND Tuesday 19 th MAXIMUM NUMBER: 20 EXTRA INFORMATION: Upcycling! Your chance to develop your creative and design skills, and create that special gift for that special person. Make something new and unique from something old and tired. You will have a choice of making either a pallet lamp, complete with funky personalised shade or your own design make coasters, a stool, bottle caddy, decorative plaque or whatever you fancy!. If you can explain how you are going to make it, you can do it! TIERPARK BIELEFELD / OBERSEE PRICE: Free WHERE: Tierpark Bielefeld / Obersee, Bielefeld WHEN: Monday 18 th July OR Tuesday 19th EXTRA INFORMATION: The Tierpark has over 450 animals ranging from bears to owls and from horses to beavers. You will be able to get close to many of the animals and for a euro you can also buy animal food to feed them. In the afternoon you will move onto Obersee Park in Bielefeld where you can play beach volleyball, football or minigolf. Or if you are in a more relaxed mood just wander around the lake or sit in the sun and maybe enjoy an ice cream.
