2 Introduction Welcome to International Tax Review s European Tax Awards. This is the sixth year we have held the awards and each year it gets more difficult to compile the shortlists and choose the winners. That is why we do not do it ourselves. After we have put together the lists of nominees, which are based on submissions from firms and further research with advisers and taxpayers, we send these lists to the European Chapter of Tax Executives International, who choose who they think should win the awards. It means we get the widest views from the market about Europe's best firms for tax advice. The awards have developed from being based simply on tax and transfer pricing. Now, for example, there are awards for indirect tax and tax disputes, as well as awards for the top tax teams in financial services, energy and media & entertainment. But this evening is not only about winning. It is also an opportunity for you to meet your peers and compare your experiences as advisers and clients over some fine food and drink. 3 Methodology In February and March 2010, firms in 25 European jurisdictions Austria, Baltic States, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine and UK - were invited to submit at least three examples of their best work for the February 2009 to February 2010 period. The submissions were eligible for consideration for the two awards (tax and transfer pricing) in each of the countries, as well as for the 14 pan-european awards. International Tax Review editorial staff considered the submissions, as well as what they already knew about the firms through research for World Tax 2010, to compile shortlists for each award. The shortlists were submitted to a panel of tax executives made up of members of Tax Executives International s European chapter. They chose the winners in consultation with International Tax Review. The awards were judged according to: Size (Not conclusive, though it does indicate what a tax team is capable of taking on) Innovation (Did the solution the adviser employ show something more than the straightforward answer that is commonly used?) Complexity (Did the matter address tax issues that were out of the ordinary? What ingenuity did the adviser show to solve them?) 2 May The Dorchester, London
