CURRICULUM INFORMATION BOOKLET: SCIENCE FACULTY Page 3 of 16 Introduction Dear Parent/Guardian Science is part of every aspect of our lives, and arguably one of the most important subjects students study at school. It is how our bodies work, why we become ill, how we get well, our impact on the world around us and how that world works. It is key to students understanding of moral and ethical issues, such as what their part in global warming should be, whether we should allow stem cell research and what we should do about the energy crisis that will affect the world in their lifetimes. There is no aspect of a student s life that science does not touch, and all students are entitled to the opportunity to develop their understanding of these things. KS3 Science sets the foundations for GCSEs and A-Levels. We offer lessons which are accessible for all students in the class and we create opportunities in every lesson for students to push beyond their target grades. We encourage a can do attitude and prepare solid foundations to aid rapid progress with an awareness of how skills transfer to other subjects and the real-world. There are lots of opportunities to benefit from extra support when required. At KS4 we aim to provide students with the best qualification route to suite their abilities and aspirations. To this end we currently offer GCSEs in all three separate sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics), GCSEs in Science and Additional Science. The sciences at KS5 are delivered via AS and A2 Level Biology Chemistry and Physics. These stretch even the most able students and are the ideal base for moving on to university. All three sciences develop the students practical and transferrable skills, making them more independent and able to move forward on their chosen path. The Science Faculty aims to provide all students with the best possible pathway through science education for them personally and we welcome any feedback on what we provide. If you do have any concerns or queries, please do not hesitate to contact one of us, by at sdavison@nuthorpe.co.uk or jpeart@nunthorpe.co.uk or vphillips@nuthorpe.co.uk, or by phone on , Ext 140. Yours sincerely Mr J Peart Director of Biology Mrs S Davison Director of Chemistry Mrs V Phillips Director of Physics
CURRICULUM INFORMATION BOOKLET: SCIENCE FACULTY Page 4 of 16 Science Examinations KS3 Students will have regular interim tests throughout years 7, 8 and 9. These will be combined with assessments of their practical skills to give overall levels for interim reports and setting purposes. KS4 GCSE (Years 10-11) Exam board: AQA Course: GCSE Biology, GCSE Chemistry, GCSE Physics, GCSE Science, GCSE Additional Science (Grades A*-G) KS5 GCE Exam Board: OCR Course: AS/A2 Biology, AS/A2 Chemistry, AS/A2 Physics (Grades A*-E)
CURRICULUM INFORMATION BOOKLET: SCIENCE FACULTY Page 5 of 16 Science Exam Schedule Year 7, 8 and 9 KS3 students will have assessments every half term. Year 10 Students will follow the GCSE program of study with examinations at the end of year 11. The majority of students will follow the Dual Award route (GCSE Core Science and GCSE Additional Science). Some students have selected Triple Science (GCSE Biology, GCSE Chemistry, GCSE Physics) as an option. Year 11 Students will follow the GCSE program of study with examination in June The majority of students will follow the Dual Award route (GCSE Science and GCSE Additional Science). Some students have selected Triple Science (GCSE Biology, GCSE Chemistry, GCSE Physics) as an option. Year 12 There are two module exams in the AS course, should a student wish to only take this subject to AS level, entry to these exams will be decided in conjunction with H Jackson, Head of Sixth Form. Year 13 In each subject students will sit 2 modules in June 2016, plus a practical assessment; there are also opportunities to take resits from AS at this exam session.

Key Stage 4 Syllabus Examination entries Entries will be made in accordance with students meeting the criteria illustrated on pages 9 and 10 of the Examinations Guide, and professional judgement on behalf of the school staff by Danny Yates (Vice Principle). If these requirements are not fulfilled then costs for exam entries will be passed onto the students and parents/carers. These cases are thankfully rare, and once the student has attended the examination(s) and performed to the best of their ability, we do reimburse parents the cost of the exam entries. Our intention in these cases is to ensure that we have the full support from parents for the examinations their child will undertake. 12 CURRICULUM INFORMATION BOOKLET: SCIENCE FACULTY Page 12 of 16 Further Information The Science Faculty follow the policy of assessing all students in KS 3 & 4. The objectives of assessments are to assess pupils understanding to aid future teaching and to ensure that the student is making sufficient progress in their current set. These assessments will be used for the Data Collection system and allow students progress to be tracked. Any student deemed to be underperforming will be invited to attend after school intervention classes, where they will have the opportunity to receive one to one tuition in order to achieve their expected target. Within KS5 students are given regular homeworks, topic tests and assessments which will stretch them and check their understanding of the topic just studied. Underachieving students will be invited to attend intervention classes where mistakes and misunderstandings will be analysed in detail. Extra Classes There is a timetable for extra support available for all students displayed in every Science classroom and students are always encouraged to ask for help from any Science teacher should they need it. Throughout the academic year the Science Faculty will be offering an extensive schedule of extra after-school revision classes to all students. Attendance at these classes is not compulsory but recommended for students requiring extra support in achieving their targets.
CURRICULUM INFORMATION BOOKLET: SCIENCE FACULTY Page 13 of 16 Equipment: KS3 & 4 In line with the schools equipment policy all students are expected to be organised for every lesson. They are responsible for their own equipment and are expected to arrive to all lessons with at least the following: The correct Science exercise book Scientific calculator Fully stocked pencil case and planner Equipment: KS5 Similar to KS3 & 4 all students are expected to be organised for every lesson. They are responsible for their own equipment and are expected to arrive to all lessons with all the equipment they require. Students will also be required to leave a 10 returnable deposit for the set books unless of course they purchase them personally, for example from Amazon. Setting A4 paper Scientific calculator- as used for Maths. I recommend Casio fx-991es Pens, pencils (coloured and normal), highlighters & ruler Lever Arch file and dividers (We provide these, but they MUST be brought) Students are not set in Science. Students are taught in mixed ability classes from Year 7 to Year 11. The option block (Triple Award) is taught as one single class for the unit 3 content. MAT Students in Science Students identified as more able and talented in Science will have opportunities to be involved in activities throughout the year. In class all students will have work differentiated for them meaning that all students will feel challenged at all times.
CURRICULUM INFORMATION BOOKLET: SCIENCE FACULTY Page 14 of 16 KS3 and KS4 Online resources and Background Reading Useful Reading List Revision guides will be offered to the students and these can be purchased from the Faculty for a small fee. These will aid students in revision as well as providing some extra support in lessons. It is useful for students to read any scientific newspaper articles as many questions in the exams do include newspaper articles and if students are used to the format, then this can only be an advantage. Scientific Journals e.g., New Scientist will also help students access scientific language as well as to explore science out of their normal classroom environment. My family and other animals Gerrard Durrell G&T Focus magazine A short history of nearly everything Bill Bryson Why don t penguins feet freeze?
