Land surface modeling of precipitation, soil moisture and radiation. Radiative transfer modeling Research interests include: (a) Assimilation of aerosol and cloud optical thickness, and particle size data into climate/weather/air quality models to improve representation of aerosol/cloud forcing and interactions; (b) Using aerosol information derived from satellites such as MODIS, MISR, GOES, and CALIPSO to improve the 3D air quality modeling; (c) Investigating the potential of aerosol and cloud products for the improvement of NWP; (d) Using land surface model to study the precipitation, soil moisture and radiation. (e) Statistical analysis of precipitation data including satellite derived data (SSM/I, CMORPH, GEOPRECIP) and gauge observations (f) Coupling of two stream radiative transfer model with the land surface model. R&D support to the project of application of NASA land model to Air Force Weather Agency operations. Working on LIS-coupling the RTM model into LIS and case test run with LIS model. Couple the atmospheric process with the land surface process to study the impact of clouds and precipitation on soil moisture, surface temperature, and agriculture. Improve the radiative transfer scheme in Land surface model. Statistical analysis of precipitation data and radiative flux data for operational and research land surface model. Using CRTM to study the land surface emissivity in near IR and microwave. September, 2001 ~ May, 2006, Graduate Research Assistant, Department of Atmospheric Sciences, University of Alabama in Huntsville. Major research projects included: Assembled a high spectrum resolution vector polarized radiative transfer model (HSV-RTM). Sensitivity analysis on the retrieval of aerosol property (particle size, effective radius, effective variance, real part and imaginary part of refractive index) from polarization data simulated from HSV-RTM. Investigated ice crystal shape using bi-axial radiance data collected by the CERES at its rotating-scan mode. Developed algorithms in applying spectral radiance data collected from MODIS/Terra, MODIS/Aqua, AVHRR, MISR, and ASTER to detect aerosol and cloud, and retrieve aerosol optical thickness, cloud optical thickness and cloud effective radius. Applied the ray tracing method to study the cloud ice crystal particle properties (single scattering albedo, phase function and asymmetry factor), and examined their implication for the radiative flux calculations. Advanced data assimilation techniques such as the 3D-Var, 4D-Var and Kalman filter methods ~ 2001, Graduate Research Assistant, Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences.
