1 Guided Reading for Pre-Readers? YES! Presented by Heidi Butkus Here is the basic idea of doing guided reading with pre-readers: 1. Take them through the motions of -. A Good Book 2. Teach them as many real. as you can along the way. 3. As they learn to track the words, they will begin to. 4. Try to make it as as possible so that children will learn that reading with the teacher is a special time. Choose the right book! 2 Some good examples of great, predictable, easy readers are: Real books are wonderful, but you can also do this with. Look for The School, an easy reader freebie from my blog. (Sept. 14, 2012 entry) I have a whole Pinterest Board dedicated to FREE emergent readers like this. Look for the board called. Using non-fiction books like these in a reading group is a great way to build as well. What can a non-reader learn from being taught to "read" books like these? 4 Routines for Guided Reading with Pre- Readers 1. At the beginning of the lesson, don't. Let the kids join in chorally as you read your book. My Word Family Book 2. Read the book aloud,. 3. Encourage children to look for. When we find them, we often sing the spelling song that goes with them! 4. Now read it off of a. (But take those pictures OFF!) Make sure you point to the words, as you read. 5. Model using the to help figure out the words. Have kids help replace the pictures as you go along. 6. Pass out the books. Tell them you are looking for kids that are to the words as they read, and. 7. As soon as they have the books in hand, have everyone find and touch: 8. Have the group read with you, pointing at the words as they go along. Stop and put fingers. "Fingers up! Wait for everyone to turn the page! 9 For early readers, constant exposure to. Anything you can do to have them build letters and words is a plus!
