2 NCA Level 1 NGLISH, 2015 STANDARD COURS OUTLIN The course consists of five major elements, which are: 1. Writing 2. Reading 3. Literature 4. Film 5. Presenting 1 Writing There are two internal assessments in this section. You will be entered for either 1.4 Creative writing (3 credits) Or 1.5 Formal writing (3 credits) You will create a folio of different types of writing and will choose one creative or one formal piece to type up and submit for assessment. 2 Reading Throughout the year you will read and analyse a variety of material in preparation for the external assessment 1.3. Unfamiliar written texts (4 credits) You will also do a personal reading log that will be assessed for 1.10 Form personal responses to independently read texts 3 Literature You will study a range of short and extended texts in preparation for the external assessment 1.1 Written texts (4 credits) 4 Film You will study a film in preparation for external 1.2 Visual texts (4 credits) 5 Presenting 1.6 is an internally assessed unit of work which requires you to write and deliver a monologue. This standard, Construct and deliver an oral text is worth 3 credits.
3 Internal xternal 1.4 Creative writing (AS v 4) or 1.1 Written texts (AS90849 v10 4 credits 1.5 Formal writing (AS90053 v 4) 3 credits 1.10 Reading Log ( AS 90854v1) 4 credits 1.2 Film (AS90850 v1) 4 credits 1.6 Oral text (AS90854 v1) 3 credits 1.3 Unfamiliar texts (AS90851 v1) 4 credits Total = 22 credits NCA Level Teaching Programme Administration of the Course. Completion: Students are required to complete all work set by their teachers, whether it is the specific tasks indicated above or other tasks set as preparation and practice work throughout the course. Matters related to completion of work will be dealt with according to the procedures laid down by the College. xtensions/ Resits: Folders: In exceptional circumstances students need to apply to Mr West for an extension. Resits will not be offered. ach student must keep a complete, well organised and tidy folder (paper or electronic) of work done for the course. Use of Computers: It is expected that most student work will be completed on a computer. In most instances, however, work will not be accepted visa or on a flash drive. It is the students responsibility to print off and hand in their own work. Plagiarism should be avoided at all costs. Staff will regularly use software to monitor authenticity. Literacy requirements: A minimum of 10 nglish credits is needed to meet the level 1 literacy requirements.
4 Policies for Internal Achievement Standards 1.4 Produce creative writing Computers will be used under supervision for the final copy All draft work must be submitted with the final copy No reader/writers 1.5 Produce formal writing Computers will be used under supervision for the final copy All draft work must be submitted with the final copy No reader/writers 1.6 Construct and deliver an oral text ( monologue) Preparation may be carried out at home and at school The presentation must take place in front of the class All presentations will be set in a formal situation All presentations will be videoed for marking and assurance 1.10 Form personal responses to independently read texts All texts must read independently Responses must be in written form A short interview will take place to verify authenticity Management All student work is to be kept in Room 13 and retained until the end of the year. All students will be issued with a course booklet containing the year s programme, due dates, school policies on attendance, late work, appeals, etc All submitted work will have a cover sheet with marking criteria and room for teacher comment. Students will sign the authenticity section of it before submitting it. Student work cannot be returned until the assurance process has been carried out.
