4 Gear Principle Principle of Operation The gear was originally developed for space applications to provide reliable performance under harsh conditions. Circular Spline A solid steel ring with internal teeth. Wave Generator The Wave Generator is a thin raced ball bearing fitted onto an elliptical plug serving as a high efficiency torque converter. The Flexspline is slightly smaller in diameter than the Circular Spline resulting in it having two fewer teeth on its outer circumference. Flexspline A flexible cylinder with external teeth and a flanged mounting ring. It is held in an elliptical shape by the Wave Generator and its teeth engage with the teeth on the Circular Spline across the major axis of the ellipse. As soon as the Wave Generator starts to rotate clockwise, the zone of tooth engagement travels with the major elliptical axis. When the Wave Generator has turned through 180 degrees the Flexspline has regressed by one tooth relative to the Circular Spline. Each turn of the Wave Generator moves the Flexspline two teeth relative to the Circular Spline. The Advantages of Gears from Harmonic Drive High reliability and long operating life Gears from Harmonic Drive achieve far higher MTBF values than other gear principles. Operation in harsh environments The internal design of the gear and the material selection makes it robust against temperature, variation, vibration, shock and corrosive environments. Large hollow shaft capacity Gears from Harmonic Drive provide the option of a central hollow shaft. This can be used to pass cables, shafts or measuring equipment through the centre of the gear. Small dimensions and low weight Gears from Harmonic Drive are much more compact and significantly lighter than conventional gears. High torque capacity Since power is transmitted through multiple tooth engagement gears from Harmonic Drive offer a torque capacity higher than conventional gears. High single-stage reduction ratios High single-stage reduction ratios ranging from 30:1 to 320:1 can be achieved with only three gear components. High efficiency Excellent efficiency compared to other gear systems can be achieved under rated operating conditions. Gears from Harmonic Drive are not self-locking and do not exhibit stick-slip effects. Excellent positioning accuracy and repeatability Gears from Harmonic Drive provide a positioning accuracy of less than one minute of arc and repeatability of just a few seconds of arc. 4

Depending on the requirements of the application we are able to produce gears with large hollow shafts. This hollow shaft affords the designer a chance to optimize the use of the space available as it can be used to pass services such as: fluids, electric cables, shafts, supply lines and spindles 5

7 Applications Compact and precision gears go ocean deep Saab Seaeye, widely regarded as one of the leading suppliers of electrically powered Remotely Operated Vehicles, utilise the extremely compact Harmonic Drive HDUF gear component set in their rugged PT35N Pan and Tilt Unit. Harmonic Drive was selected by Saab Seaeye for its proven reliability which is very important in the harshest possible subsea conditions. The simple design of the HDUF gear provides a reliable low weight, high output torque system with precise control and in a compact design. Hollow shaft actuators assist communication The Harmonic Drive CHA Hollow Shaft Actuators are used to ensure the precise alignment of communications antennae mounted on offshore oil and gas platforms. Developed by the Norwegian company Nera Networks the antennae systems are used for transmitting voice and data signals between platforms and supply vessels. The CHA actuator provides a complete integrated solution including feedback system, brushless motor, precision gear and high capacity cross roller bearing meaning that the antenna can be mounted directly to the actuator reducing weight and components. Reliable gear solution for electric actuation The exploration of deep sea oil and gas fields is very cost intensive and hence the technology required must be reliable. Analysis of historical data and case studies concluded that some electromechanical systems could deliver more than 25% reduction in production downtime compared to hydraulic systems in ultradeep water applications. The CameronDC TM electric choke actuator is integrated with the best available choke technology including gears from Harmonic Drive. Here, optimum reliability, increased availability and improved operability is realised with Harmonic Drive HFUC component sets. The variable speed system with gears from Harmonic Drive means there is extremely durable, reliable and compact design at the core of this electromechanical system. 7
