1 This tutorial is presented to you by Maarten Beerten. In this tutorial I am going to show you how to draw the inside of a car. Drawing the inside of a car is quite difficult, because there are a lot of small components and details. Therefore I would recommend you follow a couple of basic steps that I am now going to discus with you. Sometimes when you say something it sounds so easy, but if you did not know them, you would probably struggle to get it right. If you want to design an interior, it is going to be the same. If you want to design an interior of a car, you should know what car. Height, width, length and number of passengers. In the following steps, I will show you how to proceed, without forgetting important things. First of all knowing what car you are going to use to design an interior. In this case I took one of my own designs. It is a combination between an SUV and an off road vehicle. When you have chosen your car, make sure you have got also a side view of the car.

Therefore I would recommend you follow a couple of basic steps that I am now going to discus with you.

2 When you have the side view of the car you should be able to determine the number of people that should be transported with this vehicle. You can do this in a very basic way with simple stick man like I did down her. The next step is to analyse your vehicle. Get familiar with it, and try to find shapes colours materials that you like, and isolate them.

3 With this shapes you are going to try and find new ways to use them, so that the exterior and interior are in the same style. Know this, as I said before, an interior has very much details, so as I thought you before, start in 2D so you can find a balance in your shape and colour patterns. Note, if you draw shapes that you feel need to be explained more, do not hesitate and draw the on another paper or enlarged next to you 2D drawing, you can even write a note next to your drawing to explain yourself better. You can design the interior from many sides; front view, side view and top view are the most common. I drew the front and the side view.

4 Now I will show you a safety future that you can use if you are quite serious about your design. People need to fit in your car that is the whole purpose. That is way you should perform some basic techniques that will tell you if you are on the right track. The technique for the interior is to make sure your driver, co-driver and passengers can look outside. You could tell that from your 2D side view drawing that you made

5 before. But the driver has other responsibilities; he needs to be able to look in front, and behind him. So that he can safely anticipate in traffic with his vehicle. To make sure he can do that, you need to draw a line through the window towards the eyes of the driver. This way you can determinate if the driver can look outside properly. The next thing is to make sure the rear view mirror is placed in his line of sight and from there on he should be able to look out through the rear window. Like indicated here. The small dark stripe on the front window is the rear view mirror, from that point the view goes 180 degrees the other way. By checking this hopefully you now know your design works. Now we are going to take our 2D design into a 3D model. The first step is to draw a square in 3D with a 1 or 2 point perspective. Like shown here.

The next thing is to make sure the rear view mirror is placed in his line of sight and from there on he should be able to look out through the rear window. Like indicated here.

6 Now that you have your basic shape and your 2D views, try to draw the main lines in very light. So that you can check your basic shape. You can see that I drew the windshield line and the centre line from the dashboard

7 over the centre console in a bit thicker. You can also she the (steering)wheel and the line of the window. The lines which we like we are going to make thicker and try to bring a more definitive shape in to the dashboard and centre console. Also do not forget the door panels. Now that we have our basic shape, we can go and colour it. (Tip: if you are happy with this basic shape, try to scan and print it out a couple of times to try different techniques and colours. This so you do not have to start all over again each time). Depending on what paper you used, you can colour it deferent ways. I did not use marker paper, so there for my drawing is done with blue and black pencil.

Now that we have our basic shape, we can go and colour it.

8 Remember, if you want to show some components better, draw them on a new paper in 3D enlarged and even write some notes next to them. For example I drew the seat and the handbrake leaver enlarged down her.

9 To give you some other ideas of how to finish up an interior, I will place some other interiors down here which I made for a lotus super seven kit car. These interiors are done with markers.
