5 The Series 60 The first commercial diesel engine with a fully integrated electronic control system, the Detroit Diesel Series 60 is the workhorse engine other manufacturers have tried to imitate. Its first usage was in the Class 8 diesel truck market and it still leads in this field, but since then it has been engineered into a variety of applications, including those in the oilfield. Recent engine developments have led to certification for offshore hazardous environments. Look around and you ll see Series 60s powering draw works, well servicing rigs, seismic vibrators, blenders, cementers, mud pumps, drill rigs and wire line snubbing. With a horsepower range from 300 hp to 665 hp, these 12.7L and 14.0L engines are fuelefficient and environmentally friendly. The Series 60 is also recognized for its built-in reliability and durability. With its heavy-duty cast block, unique 3-piece design pistons, large crankshaft journals and tough bottom-end main bearing support system, this engine has the toughness to get the job done and come back eager for more. The Series 50 The proven 8.5L Detroit Diesel Series 50 engine is the 4-cylinder version of the Series 60 with the same heavyduty qualities as the larger Series 60. With a horsepower range from 250 hp to 350 hp, this is the ideal engine for applications where high torque and horsepower are demanded. The turbo-charged air-to-air charge-cooled Series 50 incorporates a special counter-rotating weight system to provide smooth, vibration-dampened performance, no matter where it s used. And the time-tested DDEC electronic engine control system ensures optimum performance and fuel efficiency with minimal emissions. Like all Detroit Diesel engines, the Series 50 is designed for easy periodic maintenance and engineered to be overhauled or rebuilt when required and returned to the jobsite with minimum downtime and out-of-pocket cost. With a horsepower range from 250 bhp to 350 bhp, this is the ideal engine for applications where high torque and horsepower are demanded. General Specifications Series 60 Outside, the cylinder liner is cooled all the way to the top, using a patented feature called top liner cooling. This reduces ring temperatures by 100º F, another reason why Series 50/60 engines live so long. Inside each cylinder liner is an iron cross head piston. This iron piston provides a hard surface for the rings to seal against, unlike aluminum, which requires a special cast insert. Intake and exhaust passages are short and straight. Hot exhaust gases don t transfer too much heat into the head as they exit, preserving more energy to operate the turbo, and the engine doesn t waste fuel (pumping air in and out). 10 Want ToKnow More? Take A Look At The Simple Design Of The Engine. The One-Piece Cylinder Head Contains The Overhead Camshaft. This Camshaft Arrangement Provides A Variety Of Benefits: Intake and exhaust passages are straight for easy entry and exit of air from the cylinder. The engine doesn t waste fuel pumping air in and out. Intake and exhaust passages are also short. Intake air is not overly heated as it passes through the head. The resulting cooler air in the cylinder improves economy. And the hot exhaust gases don t transfer too much heat into the head as they exit, preserving more energy to operate the turbo. The overhead cam allows for direct actuation of the fuel injectors without push rods or push tubes. The result is high fuel injection pressure and better fuel economy. The overhead cam also allows for the use of 38 head bolts on the Series 60, providing up to 1,000,000 pounds of clamp load on the head gasket for extremely long life. Inside each cylinder liner is the DDC TM Iron Cross Head Piston. This iron piston provides a hard surface for the rings to seal against, unlike aluminum, which requires a special cast insert. Outside, the cylinder liner is cooled all the way to the top, using a patented DDC feature called top liner cooling. 11 Electronic Engine Controls. The Way To Control Profits. Complete Control With The DDEC System DDEC is a complete, integrated engine management and control system. The functions of DDEC can be easily categorized: I N P U T Input to DDEC comes from a variety of sources: The machine operator The machine itself Engine sensors These inputs flow to the Electronic Control Module (ECM), which is mounted on the engine. The ECM is a powerful yet simple computer. A N A L Y S I S The ECM analyzes the input from the sources mentioned. It analyzes hundreds of inputs every second and knows what the machine operator would like the machine to do, what the machine is doing, the temperature of the engine, RPM, oil pressure, load factor and so on.the ECM then compares this input to the data stored in its memory. O U T P U T The commands from the ECM activate each fuel injector. Each fuel injector is instructed to inject a given amount of fuel at a given time. Display Every Event W ith Electronic Controls Detroit Diesel offers an electronic display that can replace a typical mechanical instrument panel. In addition, the Detroit Diesel electronic display will indicate any problem with a script message. The engine ECM records every significant event within its built-in memory. It s a simple procedure for a service technician, or even the machine operator, to access and display the information and quickly locate a problem. DDEC IV, the fourth generation of DDEC, is now standard equipment on all Series 50, Series 60, Series 2000, and Series 4000 engines. DDEC Reports DDEC Reports, part of Detroit Diesel Diagnostic Link (3DL) software, extracts data from DDEC Data Pages (standard on every DDEC IV engine) and produces comprehensive reports for service technicians and management.
