7 DM Call for research applications: Sustainable business from knowledge to solutions The aim is to speed up the efficient utilization of new knowledge and thereby boost the competiveness of Finnish industry in the field of bioeconomy and cleantech. For joint projects between companies and research institutions For research organisations The projects should involve research promoting the renewal of the theme area in question, new innovations and a substantial competitive edge for businesses. Projects must be planned in close cooperation with the private sector, taking account of the recognised needs of companies within the theme area. Application period: Tue Mon

8 Focus on impact Projects aiming at sustainable solutions for the bioeconomy, circular economy and cleantech. Projects can include studies related to verifying the potential exploitation of the research results. Must be planned in close cooperation with enterprises, while taking account of their views and needs. When planning the beneficiary of a project, you should take note of the entire value network needed. Priority is given to developing know-how that will support the international growth of SMEs. International co-operation in the projects is important. Strong international cooperation in projects fosters the capacity to expand the expertise and insights involved in research and international business activities.

9 Goal: efficient utilisation of the results The projects must take particular account of the efficient exploitation of the results and the related new knowledge in boosting new innovations and the competitiveness of Finnish industry. Projects will be financed that generate solutions meeting the identified research needs of companies and which have an exploitation plan for boosting competitive, international business.

10 Research projects carried out by companies: Collaboration between companies and research groups -Parallel projects Companies are encouraged to execute the research project in collaboration with another company or research group. Tekes can fund projects as parallel projects. A project by a research organisation can be run in parallel with enterprise projects if it supports the enterprises' research topics and its results are applicable on a broad basis. When the partner is a university or a research institute, Tekes requires that companies' needs serve as a starting point for the project plan. 11 Research projects carried out by companies: Collaboration between companies and research groups -Parallel projects The motivation of joint projects arise from companies' research and business renewal needs. A joint project includes companies' own R&D projects and a parallel public research project conducted by research organizations. In joint projects, companies' total costs must be at least 50% of the total joint project volume, if company partners are SMEs (min. 3 company partners needed) In joint projects, companies' total costs must be at least 70% of the total joint project volume if company partners are large corporations In addition to each partner s own project plans, a shared general level description about the aims, tasks and results of the joint project must be included lisätietoa rinnakkaisprojekteista

12 Multidisciplinary research projects Public research networked with companies Projects must be planned in close cooperation with companies and the business world. The project s contents and goals must be based on commercial research needs. Companies' needs serve as a starting point for the project plan. Target is to create new knowledge and competence to serve as a basis for companies future business Interest expressed by businesses in the project contents is a precondition for being granted Tekes research funding. 13 Call guidelines, specially for multidisciplinary research projects Projects should be planned in close cooperation with companies and the business life. Project contents and goals must be based on commercial research needs. Companies indicate their commitment and interests to a project by filling in the Notification of participation in project (rtf) form. Special questions for utilisation of the new knowledge and the results of the project. Deadline The application must specify the concrete ways in which discussions will take place with enterprises and sectors of industry interested in the research.

14 Call guidelines, specially for multidisciplinary research projects, Project execution plan describing objectives, tasks, resources and key milestones that are essential for the utilization of research results has to be included in the application Utilisation plan of the new knowledge and the results must be included to a project plan. A steering group with representatives from companies and other parties important from the viewpoint of utilization of the research results shall be appointed to follow up each project. Tekes funding share is 60% or 70% of the project's total costs.

15 Tekes favours open access scientific publishing Tekes is committed to the objectives and approaches of open access science and research. By promoting open research Tekes aims at improving visibility and impact of science in the innovation system and society at large. The project research plan must include a publication plan which takes account of open access publishing. We recommend that you consult your own organisation's guidelines on Open Access publishing.

16 Tekes favours open access scientific publishing We recommend that researchers make sure that publications produced with Tekes funding are made openly available following either green or gold open access* By storing parallel copies in machine-readable formats in suitable repositories or databases, where possible. The publications should be available free of charge The contents of research publications shall be openly available immediately or as soon as possible, after publication. The maximum embargo periods follow the recommendations of the European Commission: six months for humanities and twelve months for social sciences Articles can also be published in open access publication series Tekes is planning recommendations regarding opening the research data where possible without violating the interests and IPR s of participating stakeholders *Green Open Access: self-archiving, Golden OA: open journals

18 Application processs Call opened Information event We will be delighted to discuss projects in the planning stage during the application period. In particular, applicants planning industry-driven, joint projects should contact a Tekes expert at the earliest possible stage. Contact us if you have any questions and when you are ready for discussions: Please send a free-form, 1-2 page summary of the research project to the address kestavaa(a)tekes.fi by 17 December 2015 at the latest. 19 Practicalities about the application submission Send your full application to Tekes via the online service by Mon. 29 February Select "Kestävää2016" from the menu item "Is the application related to a Tekes programme or theme?" located in the basic information section of the application form. Joint projects (multiple applicants) must have a common project title/heading. All partners in joint projects (multiple applicants) must submit their application before the deadline. Funding decisions will be made in April/May Application and project plan can be written in English or Finnish
