1 GWP NETWORK MEETING AND CONSULTING PARTNERS MEETING September 2010 Radisson BLU Arlandia Hotel Stockholm, Sweden EXPLORING THE ROLE OF WATER SECURITY IN REGIONAL AND NATIONAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT We welcome you to the 2010 Consulting Partners (CP) meeting, which begins with the formal general assembly of the GWP network (the GWP Network Meeting) and reports on the progress over the past year. The 2010 CP meeting will be an opportunity to examine the key drivers of human security, in terms of the contribution of water security to ensuring food security, energy security and environmental security. Further, the meeting will discuss the regional pressures on water security through climate change, extreme weather events, population growth, urbanisation and migration. Integrated water resources management provides the approach to build water security in the face of all these pressures. How to articulate the inter-sectoral links among the key drivers, showing the economic good sense of ensuring water security, will be the focus of the discussions. Our strategic allies and partners among regional and multilateral development banks and agencies will join the discussions on Day 2, providing a further opportunity to identify areas for future joint action and collaboration for regional economic development. 3-4 September 2010, Stockholm, Sweden 1

2 Objectives of the Network Meeting and Consulting Partners Meeting 1. To receive annual reports from the Chair, ES, Chair of TEC and Chair of Regional Chairs. 2. To build a common and shared understanding on regional development drivers and pressures and their links with water security. 3. To articulate the added value and role of GWP in addressing water security and critical regional development challenges: food security, energy security, climate change and urbanisation. 4. To enhance understanding on the economic case for regional investments in water security and better water resources management. 5. To ensure that water security considerations are mainstreamed into regional investment strategies and decision-making, at regional and national levels. 6. To promote regional fund-raising through strengthened collaboration with regional development banks. Expected outputs of the Network Meeting and Consulting Partners Meeting 1. A summary report of the proceedings and recommendations of the meetings will be sent to all participants. Expected outcomes of the Network Meeting and Consulting Partners Meeting 1. Critical drivers and pressures for regional economic development identified and discussed, links with water security clarified. 2. Economic arguments for investment in water resources management articulated. 3. Strategic actions and opportunities for addressing water security and critical development challenges identified (food security, energy security, climate change and urbanisation), including the added value and role of GWP. 4. Win-win opportunities identified for collaboration between GWP and regional development banks and agencies, addressing water security through regional investment decisions. 5. Dr. Serageldin was instrumental in conceptualizing and establishing the Global Water Partnership in and became the first GWP Chair.
