" #, % (& English Summary The 'right to relate': Relational environment and Wellbeing in contemporary Greek Society An extensive and coherent body of social and psychological research highlights supportive personal and family networks as important causal and moderating factors for emotional and physical health. Hence, results from a recent (2003) European study ( that demonstrated significant and unexpectedly lower rates of social networking, wellbeing and life satisfaction in Greece (in comparison with the other European countries) is a cause for concern. This is an intriguing finding especially in light of established common sense ideas about cultural values (extensive social networks and quality of life). The paper will pull together evidence from two cross-sectional studies (Kafetsios, Kafetsios & Nezlek, 2003 as well as the EKKE data) that looked at aspects of relating and health across the life course in Northern Greece. It will be argued that Psychological variables (such as quality of family relationships) should be combined with cultural values (such as horisontal-vertical collectivism, Triandis, 1995) to explain some of the seeming disparities such the one reported in the EKKE study recently. The paper will particularly stress the need for policy makers to lean closely to this interesting connection and will discuss implications of the findings for educational and social policies. 2
