3 First Aid/CPR Scenario Sample #001 Description of Emergency: A teen ager (approximately 5 5 and 120 lbs) has been wounded with a knife and is lying on the floor of the men s locker room. The victim is face up and motionless on the floor, the knife protruding from his shoulder. Eight bystanders (3 adults, 1 teen ager, and 4 children) crowd around the scene. Two adults are holding the teen ager and claim that he is the one who stabbed the victim. The other bystanders arrived after victim was wounded. The accused teen ager (approximately 5 7 and 135 lbs) is extremely upset; he is denying any involvement and demanding to be allowed to leave. Resources: No one else on your lifeguard team has responded to this emergency. There are 5 other lifeguards, 1 head lifeguard, and 1 cashier on duty today. It is approximately 3:30 p.m. on a Monday. A recreational swim session is in progress; over 100 individuals are using the pool. Four lifeguards are stationed for surveillance. You have a fanny pack with dressings, bandages, vinyl gloves, and a pocket mask. The facility has a complete first aid kit and any other rescue and first aid equipment typically found where you work.

4 First Aid/CPR Scenario Sample #002 Description of Emergency: It is the end of the day. After you check the locker rooms and lock all perimeter doors, you walk by the deep end of the pool where you see a small girl (about 4 tall and 55 lbs) motionless at the bottom. She is fully dressed, and you are sure she was not in the water when the pool was cleared about 15 minutes earlier. Resources: You call out for assistance and two lifeguards who were just leaving the facility respond. They are both in street clothes. No one else is in the facility. You are still in uniform and have a fanny pack with dressings, bandages, vinyl gloves, and a pocket mask. The facility has a complete first aid kit and any other rescue and first aid equipment typically found where you work.

5 First Aid/CPR Scenario Sample #003 Description of Emergency: You are on duty in deep tower, supervising the diving area. You observe a young girl (approximately 4 4 and 64 lbs) slip on a rung of the 3 meter diving board and fall to the ground, striking the diving board ladder on the way down. As she nears the ground, she falls on a little boy (approximately 4 2 and 46 lbs) waiting in line to use the diving board. After the accident, the girl is sitting up and leaning against the diving board ladder. She is pale, her jaw is bleeding, and she is holding her right arm against her chest. The boy is lying on his back. His shoulder is bruised, and it looks like he struck the deck with the back of his head. He is conscious but not moving. Resources: You activate the emergency action plan and respond to this emergency. There are 5 other lifeguards, 1 head lifeguard, and 1 cashier on duty. It is approximately 2:45 p.m. on a Wednesday. A recreational swim session is in progress; over 150 individuals are using the pool. Three other lifeguards are stationed for surveillance. A break lifeguard has arrived at your station to provide back up coverage. The other break lifeguard and the head lifeguard are approaching the scene. You have a fanny pack with dressings, bandages, vinyl gloves, and a pocket mask. The facility has a complete first aid kit and any other rescue and first aid equipment typically found where you work.

7 Leader Instructions: First Aid/CPR Scenarios This page contains instructions for conducting first aid/cpr scenarios as part of a lifeguarding course or a staff orientation/in service training session. The unique format of this scenario packet (i.e., scenario answer sheet, etc.) enables you to introduce scenarios to an entire class or safety team. To use this packet: 1. Select one of the Scenario Samples, or create your own scenario using the Scenario Form on the previous page. If you create your own scenario, use the Sample Scenarios as a guide so you include enough information to identify the victim s condition. 2. Make copies of the selected scenario, the scenario answer sheet, and height and weight chart, and distribute them to each participant. If this is the first time the participants are using this packet, take a few moments to review each handout. 3. Read the scenario out loud, and then give the participants about 5 7 minutes to complete the Scene Size Up, Initial Assessment, and EMS Activation sections. 4. If the scenario involves initial and secondary assessments, have a participant or leader conduct assessment of ABCs and secondary assessment as appropriate while the other participants complete the ABCs and Secondary Assessment portions of the scenario answer sheet. Be sure to prep the victim with an appropriate history, set of vital signs and other conditions, and/or injured body parts so participants can take notes. 5. Once all assessment information has been collected, give participants another 5 minutes to complete the Care section. 6. Hold a brief discussion of how each participant filled out this answer sheet for this scenario. Do not focus on right and wrong; instead, discuss the decision making process used by the participants as well as their application of sound principles of first aid care. 7. Collect the scenario answer sheets so you can review their answers further.
