Companies can develop freely and compete with each other. Some companies can become too successful. Microsoft and Google for example have become so powerful that competition is almost impossible. Fortunately you are there as a legal advisor for the European Commission, responsible for fair competition in the European Union. 3 Your learning experience The curriculum offers a mix of law theory and practical skills. Students study three main areas of law - international law, European Union law and comparative national law (principles of law) - through a series of lectures, workshops, seminars and private study. Lectures and seminars cover subjects such as the history of law, philosophy of law, law and economics and alternative dispute resolution. You will look at English language for law and legal reasoning and improve your research, team working, legal writing, oral communication skills and debating skills. Students will perfect their command of legal English. You will need a passion for language and reading. 4 After your studies After obtaining a Bachelor s in International and European Law you can choose between continuing your studies or pursuing your career. If you decide to continue your studies you can apply for the Master s in European Law and Policy at The Hague University. Please note that admission to our Master s programmes is at the discretion of the programme manager. Career prospects The Law programme is designed for those who aspire to a career as a legal professional in the fields of international (including European) co-operation and international peace and justice. You can work as a self-employed legal professional or be employed by businesses, non-governmental organisations, international organisations, European Union institutions and governments. For those who wish to practice law in a national jurisdiction (e.g. as an attorney-at-law, barrister or judge) a local university law programme will be more appropriate. A Bachelor s in Law opens up exciting, international career opportunities. 5 Entrance requirements and costs The admission requirements for our international degrees take the Dutch educational system as their starting point: international students require the equivalent of the Dutch HAVO or VWO diplomas. For four-year Bachelors this could be a US High School diploma. Other diplomas may also be accepted; they will be considered on a case-by-case basis. English language skills Since our international Bachelor programmes are taught entirely in English, you will need a good command of the English language, both spoken and written. Bachelor candidates who were educated in Holland, United Kingdom, Ireland, United States, Canada, Australia, New-Zealand, South Africa or Malta need not take an English proficiency test. All other prospective students are required to hand in a valid and sufficient TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), TOEIC, IELTS (International English Language Testing System) or Cambridge ESOL (CAE/CPE) certificate to the Enrolment Centre. If you have not quite reached the level you need to enrol for a degree but your results are promising, we offer an English Prep School programme, which takes six months or one year. On completion of this, you will not only be ready to join a Bachelor, but you ll also have learned a lot about Holland, The Hague and our university.
