2 This programme, which builds on the expertise of both the Centre for Intellectual Property Rights (CIR) and the Interdisciplinary Centre for Law & ICT (ICRI) of KU Leuven, provides an in-depth study of European IP, ICT and Media Law. The ICT and media sector is a rapidly evolving and highly complex sector influenced by technological, economic and sociological developments. In this sector, existing legal frameworks are continuously challenged and traditional legal concepts and principles are regularly being reinterpreted. Insight into other connected disciplines is also vital to functioning at a high level. This programme intends to address the increasing demand for qualified legal practitioners in the IP, ICT and media sector. To achieve this objective, students will be offered a comprehensive study of European IP law, IT law and Media and Communications law, with a specific focus on relevant interdisciplinary perspectives (technology; economy; socio-political, cultural and media studies), and a number of practical skills that are of particular importance in this sector. To answer the need for specialised training, the faculty is drawn from a wide array of academics, government officials, civil servants from such institutions as the European Commission and national regulatory authorities, as well as leading practitioners. In this way, the programme offers academic quality and added value both to graduate students wishing to cap their curriculum and to practitioners in search of top-quality, cutting-edge expertise. Studying in the capital of Europe The LLM in Intellectual Property Rights and ICT Law is jointly organised by two universities in Belgium: HUBrussel and KU Leuven. The classes are taught at the Brussels campus. Hogeschool-Universiteit Brussel (HUBrussel) is the result of a merger between three Brussels-based university colleges and one university and as such is a multifaceted institute of higher education. With over 50 years of accumulated experience, HUBrussel has ties to the leading educational institutes in Europe. In addition, the many international firms and financial institutions have their headquarters in Brussels, making the city one of the world s biggest financial markets.

3 Situated in the heart of Western Europe, KU Leuven has been a centre of learning for nearly six centuries. Today, it is Belgium s largest university. Founded in 1425, it is one of the oldest and most renowned universities in Europe. This rich history of nearly six hundred years has provided KU Leuven with its own dynamic international dimension. Today, inter national cooperation is regarded as essential for a modern university. Top-level research is judged according to international standards and implies interaction, co-operation, and exchange, both of researchers and results. As such, KU Leuven is a founding member of the League of European Research Universities. Likewise, several quality surveys demonstrate that KU Leuven stands on par with internationally respected institutions in a large number of fields. This academic reputation attracts students from all over the world. Admission requirements for international students* International students need to have obtained a degree that is considered to be equivalent to a Master s degree in Law. However, students that have obtained a Master s degree in other disciplines may also be admitted subject to a positive evaluation of their full application file. If the Master s degree is awarded outside of the European Union: admission may be allowed on the condition that a special training course, Introduction to European Law, is attended. If the Master s degree is awarded within the European Union: admission may be allowed on the condition that a special training course, Introduction to Law, is attended unless students obtained a Master s degree in Law or a Master s degree in a discipline that includes an introduction to law of at least 60 hours. 4 Programme The programme is composed of two, parallel-running tracks: one track with a specific focus on Intellectual Property Rights, taught in Dutch and French, and one track with a specific focus on Intellectual Property Rights and ICT Law, taught in English. However, a combination of both tracks is also possible (subject to knowledge of the relevant language). It is possible to participate in the programme on a part-time basis, spreading the programme over two years. * Students graduate with a Dutch-language diploma given that they are following an English-language trajectory within a Dutch-language degree programme.

5 Profile Students are expected to have a proven academic track record, a strong interest in the areas of IP, ICT and/or Media Law and a proficient level of written and spoken English, by means of an acknowledged language test such as IELTS, TOEFL, CAE, CPE, TOEIC, SAT or ACT. Career prospects Students that have obtained the Advanced Masters in Intellectual Property Rights degree may be eligible for jobs in international law firms and companies in the IP, ICT and media sector. Students may also be suitable candidates for positions in media and telecom - munications regulators, public administration, and international public interest organisations. Students may also choose to further develop their academic skills by pursuing a PhD related to fundamental issues of IP, ICT or Media Law.
