Bodø University College is one of Norway s most modern and exciting higher education institutions and provides a wide range of study programmes at bachelor, master and PhD levels. Nature and learning Bodø University College is situated on the outskirts of the city of Bodø, Northern Norway s second largest and fast-growing city with approx inhabitants. The fantastic natural beauty of Bodø s surroundings is renowned. The mountains diving into the sea, the deep fjords, the world s strongest maelstrom and the superbly varied wildlife, including a large colony of sea eagles, provide the perfect backdrop for the university college ensuring a learning experience with a difference. We now co-operate academically with 35 different countries all round the world in study programmes, research projects and programmes, and student exchange. During the academic year 2009/10 we will be evaluated by The National Educational Authorities (NOKUT) for full university status, making us Norway s 8th university. Social life Life is not, however, just about studying, getting qualified, and working at the university college. Bodø University College provides plenty of opportunities for social life, winter and summer outdoor activities including fishing, skiing, mountain hiking, boating, entertainment and other leisure activities. Our Student Welfare Organisation provides modern accommodation close to the campus. R & D Our research and study programs are carefully designed to satisfy the needs of professions, industries, and communities, both in Norway and overseas. International research has in recent years expanded greatly in all our major academic fields: aquaculture, business, social sciences, professional practice. 3 Top 3 Life on campus Bodø University College (BUC) is a great place for learning, experience and research with its modern facilities spread over the county of Nordland on three campuses in Bodø, Mo i Rana and Stokmarknes. All our buildings at the Bodø Campus have been built during the last two decades with the newest facilities opening in Students and staff enjoy the academic and social life on campus in a thriving and dynamic atmosphere. Excellent modern housing The Student Welfare Organisation provides excellent modern housing for students with different accommodation requirements close to the university college. Students and staff alike appreciate the good quality and broad choice of food available at our 3 cafeterias. Our bookshop offers the curriculum literature you need to study, and our state-of the art interactive library is recognised as one of the finest higher education libraries in the country. Active students We encourage students to be active and can offer a wide range of social and leisure and activities including all kinds of sports and a fitness centre on campus. The great outside really lives up to its name in Bodø with unique skiing, fishing, hiking, photography, diving, cycling and walking opportunities near BUC in all seasons. On the social scene the student organisations arrange concerts, excursions, cultural and food evenings as well as students always knowing how to have some fun by themselves! 4 The Norwegian Business School of the High North Bodø Graduate School of Business was founded in Since then more than students have graduated from our Master of Science in Business program Siviløkonom. HHB admits about 400 students each year to our programs in business and information technology. Bodø Graduate School of Business (HHB) is one of three business schools in Norway. We offer business education, research, post-graduate educational studies and business development located in the northern part of Norway. Today, HHB has approximately 80 academic positions and 1000 students distributed across bachelor-, master- and Ph.D programs. We cooperate with many partners internationally and provide joint MSc-degrees with several prominent universities abroad. Internationalisation Internationalisation is one of the key elements in Bodø Graduate School of Business strategy of improving quality in education and research. We are actively engaged in facilitating student and staff exchange, as well as joint development of study programmes. We strongly encourage our students to spend at least one semester at one of our partner institutions. The exchange is reciprocal and all our master of science programs are taught in English. At the bachelor level we offer the Bachelor of Arts: Nordic Perspectives on Politics, Biology and Management, in English. Research up front amongst Norwegian business Schools The research goal of Bodø Graduate School of Business is to be a leading centre for research on business topics in the High North - with a global focus. The program focuses on the High North and Russia making it unique. centres High North Centre for Business The High North Centre for Business is based on the possibilities and challenges in the high north and is focused on business development. The objective of the centre is to utilize existing and develop new competence at Bodø University College, Innovation Norway and partners and make this expertise available for Norwegian and International businesses. It will also be a Network centre for High North problem-solving. The High North Business centre cooperates with several universities in Russia and plans to broaden its activities to include other countries as well. Centre for Ecological Economics and Ethics Centre for Ecological Economics and Ethics is a multidisciplinary communicative arena for education, research and professional training. Research and courses are focused in the field of ecological economics and ethics. SIB AS - Centre for Innovation and Economics SIB AS (Centre for Innovation and Economics), is a centre of expertise for applied research in the fields of innovation and economy. SIB AS is owned by Bodø Graduate School of Business and Kunnskapsparken AS. SVAIS - Centre for Enterprise Architecture and Information Systemse The centre provides a system-oriented and holistic approach to understanding the different elements that make up an enterprise, and how these elements interrelate. Methods and perspectives focus on how the business side of operations and the necessary technological foundation interact to achieve desired goals. Study Programs Magnus O. Sveen StatoilHydro Bodø Graduate School of Business offers a variety of study programs in the field of business. The programs cover all academic levels, ranging from Bachelor through Master of Science and Master of Business Administration to PhD degree. Homepage: [email protected] The Bachelor of Arts: Nordic Perspectives on Politics, Biology and Management This exciting new programme is aimed at students wanting to develop interdisciplinary competence about the High North and focuses on the social sciences, culture and politics, environmental issues and the sustainable management of natural resources. Depending on students preferences for further studies and job opportunities, various optional specializations for the bachelor degree are available. The Bachelor is fully taught in English and available for full degree students at Bodø University College. Exchange students from our partner institutions also take semester courses from the B.A. programme. 5

6 Faculty of Social Sciences The Faculty of Social Sciences at Bodø University College is one of Norway s largest centres for education and research in the field of social sciences. The faculty has active internationaly recognized researchers in the disciplines of Sociology, History, Journalism, Political Science, Social Work and Psychology. Altogether, 1500 students are registered in the faculty s 30 different study programmes. The Faculty offers Bachelor programmes in Social Work, Sociology, Political Science, Circumpolar Studies, History and Journalism. We offer Master programmes in Social Work, Rehabilitation, Sociology, History and Politics. The faculty also offers a PhD programme in Sociology. The faculty offers the following international programmes at bachelor level with all teaching provided in english: Bachelor in Circumpolar Studies Norwegian Language and Society Northern Studies Norwegian Politics and Society Northern Scandinavian Politics and Society At master level, the following international study programme is offered: Master in Social Work Bachelor of Circumpolar Studies (180 credits) Bachelor of Circumpolar Studies is a study programme with special relevance to Northern students and those seeking knowledge of Northern nature, resources, environment, politics, people and cultures. A special focus on indigenous people of the north is included. The BCS programme is part of the University of the Arctic study portfolio, a network of universities in the circumpolar north, of which Bodø University College is a member. The first year of the bachelor programme is studied online. The admission requirement is general competence for admission to Norwegian higher education. The Arctic Regional BCS office is located at BUC. Northern Studies (60 credits) Northern Studies is a one year study programme making up the first year of the Bachelor in Circumpolar Studies. The Northern Studies programme is provided online. The admission requirement is general competence for admission to Norwegian higher education. Norwegian Language and Society (60 credits) Norwegian Language and Society has been especially adapted and designed for international students with an interest in Norwegian society and language. This programme is also suitable for students aiming to acquire the required knowledge of the Norwegian language in order to gain general admittance to Norwegian study programmes. The admission requirement is general competence for admission to Norwegian higher education. 6

7 Social Science centre The Faculty of Social Sciences at Bodø University College is one of Norway s largest centres for education and research in the field of social sciences. Norwegian Politics and Society (30 credits) Norwegian Politics and Society provides an introduction to basic features of Scandinavian societies with emphasis on Norwegian social institutions and their functions, political institutions and the political system as well as historical outlines of Norwegian society. Norwegian Politics and Society makes up the spring semester of Norwegian Language and Society. This study is of special relevance for exchange students. The admission requirement is general competence for admission to Norwegian higher education. Northern Scandinavian Politics and Society (30 credits) Northern Scandinavian Politics and Society focuses on Scandinavia, with an emphasis on Norway and the northern regions of Scandinavia. Politics, welfare systems, natural resources, rights and indigenous peoples are some of the key topics for the programme. As part of the study, students take part in excursions to places of interest in and near Bodø. The study programme will be of special relevance to exchange students. Northern Scandinavian Politics and Society makes up the third semester of the Bachelor in Circumpolar Studies and is taught in the fall semester. The admission requirements are general competence for admission to Norwegian higher education, and in addition at least one year of university studies, preferably in the field of social sciences. Homepage: [email protected] Master in Social Work (120 credits) This new master program has been developed in co-operation with the University of The Arctic and with the help of co-operation partners in Australia and Africa. The broad international staff and student mix enables focus on comparative social work and social policy in different parts of the world. Students can apply for the Master in Social Work with various different subject backgrounds at bachelor level. The study program includes subjects such as social work theories, gender and ethnicity, social politics in the Arctic and comparative social work and methodology. The study program starts with concentrated teaching in Bodø in the fall semester followed by internet tuition for students master projects. 7

8 Faculty of biosciences and aquaculture The Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture (FBA) is one of the leading academic environments in aquaculture in Norway. In recent years the Faculty has gone through a major development, providing more academic depth and breadth, as well as excellent infrastructure. In 2005 a Master in Aquaculture programme was added to our extensive number of undergraduate programmes, and by fall 2009 the Faculty starts its own PhD programme in Aquaculture. Excellent facilities Located on the coast of Nordland County, in one of the most suitable places in the world for cold water fish farming, the College offers the ideal environment for studies and research in the fields of aquaculture and fisheries. International environment FBA is one of the four faculties at Bodø University College with 65 staff members. The Faculty prides itself in close and active interaction between staff and students. We welcome international exchange students and degree-seeking students. In addition we offer a number of internship opportunities. The Faculty offers excellent training and research facilities including chemistry and biology laboratories on campus and a state-of-the-art research station located 15 minutes walk from the main campus, by the fjord. research FBA is an internationally recognised research and educational institution in the field of marine biosciences. The research conducted at the Faculty is of direct relevance to industries, related to fisheries and aquaculture, and government management. The focus remains on basic biological mechanisms and processes relevant for the commercial production of seafood. Through several international cooperation projects, our scientific research aims to optimize production of cultivated aquatic organisms. Furthermore, our research is directed at sustainable use of coastal marine resources by emphasising ecological and ethical principles of production. 8

At graduate level we offer a Master of Science programme in Aquaculture, fully taught in English. For international students we offer a number of semester packages: (1) Bioscience, (2) Ecology and Northern Wildlife and (3) Modern Aquaculture. We now offer an International Bachelor in Biology, completely taught in English. 9

10 Faculty of professional studies Faculty of Professional Studies (PHS) is subdivided into two departments and three centres: Education, Art and Culture Nursing and Health Centre for Practical Knowledge Centre for Arts and Culture in Education Centre for Sports Achievement Education, art and culture Education, Art and Culture (LUKK) offers six different teacher education programs in a wide range of courses at all levels, ranging from pre-school to upper-secondary school. You can follow integrated programs for pre-school-teachers, teachers for primary and lower secondary school, and specialised programs for teachers in upper secondary school in the fields of Sport, Music, Dance and Drama. LUKK also offers Postgraduate teaching studies and Master in Adapted Education. We offer students a comprehensive program combining theory and hands-on practice at day-care centres and in schools. During periods of practical training, students are introduced not only to the practical aspects of teaching, but also to Norwegian education theory and school management. LUKK offers a great variety of specialized courses such as outdoor learning activities, physical training, dance, drama, music, painting, pottery, textile as well as Norwegian, English, Spanish and Lulesami language education, as part of our regular program. 10

We also have many years experience in decentralised education and long distance learning aided by modern information technology. The high quality of our programmes is safeguarded by National Guidelines and the Department Board offering full certification. SH offers Bachelor of Nursing. Half of the program will be based on supervised professional training. The program consists of: Professional and centre for Practical knowedge The Centre for Practical Knowledge has set itself the objective of promoting and developing continued professional development. The centre Scientific Foundations of Nursing, Nursing as a Profession, Medical and Scientific courses, and Social Scientific courses. SH also offers a wide range of advanced courses such as Honours in Ageing and Welfare Services for the Elderly, Honours in Occupational Health and Safety, Honours in Mental Health, Honours in Nurse Anaesthesiology, Honours in Operation Room/ Theatre nursing, Honours in Child Nursing, Honours in Intensive Care, Public Health, Substance abuse Disorders and Mental Illness. Centre for arts and culture in education The Norwegian Centre for Arts and Culture in Education was established in 2006 as a national resource centre for arts and culture in education. The centre provides competence and resources in the fields of kindergarten teaching, primary schools, municipal offers a Masters degree in Practical Knowledge, and in addition focuses activity on research in this field. schools of music and art, secondary schools, pre-school teachers, teachers of art and culture in basic training and at teachers college level, school management, students, researchers and the developers of teaching resources. centre for sports achievement The Center for Sports Achievement is a co-operation project involving Bodø University College, The Norwegian Olympic Organisation, Nordland Sports Alliance, Bodø/Glimt Football Club and Bodø Handball Club. The Centre has recruited top national expertise in the following fields: testing, basic training, intensity management, match and player analysis and nutrition. The Centre aims to be a national and international environment in practical knowledge and research for resource training in team sports. 11
