IMPRESSIONISM. Impressionism was born in Paris (France) in 19th century and in 1874 the Impressionists held their first show. The Impressionists painted not a landscape but the immediate impression of a landscape. They didn t exactly paint. The word Impressionism comes from Monet's painting, Impression sunrise (1872).
IMPRESSIONIST PAINTERS The most important impressionist painters who worked together were: Monet, Sisley, and Renoir. They influenced each other, and reproduced immediate visual impressions as registered on the retina. They didn t reproduce traditional landscapes. They abandoned the use of blacks and greys in shadows and used complementary colours.

CLAUDE MONET Claude Monet was born on 14 th November He used oil paints and the "en plein air" (outdoor) techniques for painting. During the early 1880s Claude Monet painted many groups of seascapes and landscapes. He wanted to represent the French countryside.
He was born in 1853 in Holland. At 16 years of age he began to travel to Paris and to London. At 27, Van Gogh worked for over ten years to complete more than 800 works. He worked a lot but he didn t sell his canvas. He moved to Paris with his brother Theo. In Paris, he improved his drawing technique. During this period, Van Gogh was influenced by Impressionism. Provence ( ) In this period he painted this famous work, the night skies, landscapes, portraits and the interior and exterior of the house where he lived. Saint Remy He lived in asylum near Saint Remy. Here he painted many works, the most famous is Starry Night. Vincent Van Gogh experimented different materials and techniques in his drawings and paintings.
The central figure in Van Gogh's life was his brother Theo, who provided financial support. After this he suffered recurrent bouts of mental illness which led him to suicide.
Starry Night Starry night was painted while Vincent was in the asylum at Saint Rèmy. It was painted from memory and not outdoor as Vincent's preference was. The setting is dark but the stars and the moon are bright. The sky was painted with brush strokes and is represented with swirls and spirals. The colours he used are yellow, orange, green, purple and white. The lines are very thick. The shapes are curved.
Self-Portrait with Felt Hat, 1888 Vincent Van Gogh ( ) Oil on Canvas, 44 X 37.5 cm Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam Van Gogh painted this self-portrait in 1887, after living in Paris. He used brush strokes running in a variety of directions, creating circles around his head.
The Bedroom This painting represents Van Gogh's bedroom. The colours are bright. He doesn't use the conventional perspective. Van Gogh sometimes uses the colours squeezing the tube directly on canvas. The cover is scarlet, the windows are green, the toilet table is orange, the doors are lilac, the walls are pale violet.
Sunflowers Sunflowers, one of the most important paintings by Van Gogh. The colours are thick and pasty, the main colour he used is yellow.
Wheatfield with crows Oil on Canvas, 50.5 X 103 cm Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam It was painted in July 1890, in the last weeks of Van Gogh s life. It is one of his last paintings before his suicide. The ravens and paths are symbolic, the three paths represent a state of confusion in the artist s mind. The strokes go into different directions and are quite bodied.
