4 Microsoft Speech Recognition What is speech recognition? Speech Recognition, also know as SR, is the ability for software to convert spoken words to text, or the ability to convert spoken words to windows commands. You can dictate text into any Microsoft Office XP program, Internet Explorer 5 (or later), and in Outlook Express 5 (or later). Currently you cannot dictate text into Notepad. It is recommended that you use a high quality sound input device, such as a close-talk headset where you can position the microphone. A high quality head set will have noise filters built in thus improving the accuracy of speech recognition. A poor quality microphone will cause the recognition rate to be significantly lower, or even unacceptable. Once the SR engine is set up for you it is important to train in to your environment and speaking style. Training creates a speech profile for each user. The SR engine will adapt to your speaking style (accents, pronunciation, etc.) optimize the use of SR please keep in mind that it is not intended for completely hands-free operation. The best results can be achieved if you use a combination of your voice, the mouse and the keyboard. What is the Language Bar? The language bar appears on your desktop automatically when you add speech recognition. Use the buttons on the language bar to perform tasks related to speech recognition or handwriting recognition. You can move the language bar anywhere on your screen or minimize it to the taskbar. Click on the microphone when you want to start using speech recognition. Dictation click on dictation if you want what your saying to be typed out Voice Command click on voice command if you wish to give verbal windows commands. Click the microphone again if you wish to turn off SR. 1
5 How to add Speech Recognition SR is normally added automatically as a text service when it is installed. If it has been removed aon the computer you are using and you need to re-add it please follow this procedure: - right click the language bar - click settings - under installed services, click add - in the Add Input Language dialog box, click a language in the Input Language list - Select the Speech check box, then click an option on the list How to Create a Speech Profile The first person to use speech recognition on a computer does not have to create a speech profile. The default speech profile is created when you train the SR engine to recognize your voice. If multiple users wish to use SR on one computer then it is necessary for each one to set up there own speech profile. If you wish to set up an additional speech profile simply follow the next few steps: - click start - click control panel - click Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices - click speech - under recognition profiles (on the speech recognition tab) click new - follow the directions in the profile wizard 2
6 add your own words to the SR dictionary This is an excellent tool to use if you wish to add unique words (such as names) that are not in the SR dictionary. Follow the next few steps to add your own words to the SR dictionary. - click the tools button on the language tool bar - click add/delete words - under word, type the word you wan to add - click record pronunciation and pronounce the word You may have to say the word more than once for it to be recognized but once it is it will be added to your SR dictionary.
